A novel therapy for breast cancer: implications for treatment access

In 2016, there were 250,000 new cases of invasive cancer and 60,000 of ductal carcinoma in situ. Mammograms are used to screen for cases of disease, but the literature shows that mammograms are highly dependent on patient characteristics and do not majorly impact mortality rates from invasive cancer. Additionally, they are prone to false-positives, false-negatives, and overdiagnosis in cases of in situ cancer, with overdiagnosis exposing patients to the side effects of treatment. Better screening tests are needed, and a potential solution can be to extend molecular screening methods often used in advanced stage 1 and higher cancers to stage 0 ductal carcinoma in situ cases. This new test would prevent overdiagnosis, be more accurate, and prevent unnecessary screening as well as be in line with the future of cancer care in the US

A Quantitative General Equilibrium Approach to Migration, Remittances and Brain Drain

Developing countries have experienced an outstanding outflow of skilled workers (brain- drain) over the last several decades. Additionally, migrants tend to be tied to their country of birth, since they send a large amount of remittances to their relatives. Furthermore, migration is not permanent, since a considerable number of workers return to their country of birth after a migration spell. In this paper we develop a model that is consistent with these facts. We use our model to address some important issues in the migration literature from a theoretical perspective. We study the general equilibrium effects of migration, its long-term effects, and its welfare effects, and we see whether the joint effect of return migration and remittances is strong enough to offset the effects of skilled migration. Finally, we evaluate the effectiveness of policy interventions that attempts to offset the effects of a brain drain.Migration, General Equilibrium, Brain drain, Remittances, Heterogeneous Agents

Balance Sheets and Exchange Rate Policy

    Get PDF
We study the relation among exchange rates, balance sheets, and macroeconomic outcomes in a small open economy. Because liabilities are dollarized,' a real devaluation has detrimental effects on entreprenurial net worth, which in turn constrains investment due to financial frictions. But there is an offsetting effect, int hat devaluation expands home output and the return to domestic investment, which are also components of net worth. We show that the impact of an adverse foreign shock can be strongly magnified by the balance sheet effect of the associated real devaluation. But the fall in output employment, and investment is stronger under fixed exchange rates than under flexible rates. Hence the conventional wisdom, that flexible exchange rates are better absorbers of real foreign shocks than are fixed rates, holds in spite of potentially large balance sheet effects.

Constraints on holographic multi-field inflation and models based on the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism

    Get PDF
In holographic inflation, the 4D4D cosmological dynamics is postulated to be dual to the renormalization group flow of a 3D3D Euclidean conformal field theory with marginally relevant operators. The scalar potential of the 4D4D theory ---in which inflation is realized--- is highly constrained, with use of the Hamilton--Jacobi equations. In multi-field holographic realizations of inflation, fields additional to the inflaton cannot display underdamped oscillations (that is, their wavefunctions contain no oscillatory phases independent of the momenta). We show that this result is exact, independent of the number of fields, the field space geometry and the shape of the inflationary trajectory followed in multi-field space. In the specific case where the multi-field trajectory is a straight line or confined to a plane, it can be understood as the existence of an upper bound on the dynamical masses mm of extra fields of the form m≤3H/2m \leq 3 H / 2 up to slow roll corrections. This bound corresponds to the analytic continuation of the well known Breitenlohner--Freedman bound found in AdS spacetimes in the case when the masses are approximately constant. The absence of underdamped oscillations implies that a detection of "cosmological collider" oscillatory patterns in the non-Gaussian bispectrum would not only rule out single field inflation, but also holographic inflation or any inflationary model based on the Hamilton--Jacobi equations. Hence, future observations have the potential to exclude, at once, an entire class of inflationary theories, regardless of the details involved in their model building.Comment: References added. Walk the Talk: Value Congruence for Social Change in Panhellenic Sororities

    Get PDF
As a result of the ongoing wave of civil unrest in the United States, many university organizations have re-evaluated their current structures and policies to increase emphasis on social justice principles. In particular, the leaders of the University of San Diego Panhellenic Council have verbally expressed an interest in creating a more socially just Panhellenic experience. However, feedback from community members via anonymous reports and social media posts, coupled with observations of the Council reveal leadership has yet to take tangible and sustained action. This project investigated the value congruence of USD Panhellenic leadership to better understand the process between expressing a value and acting on it to create change in the community. Specifically, I explored the question: How does value congruence among Panhellenic leaders strengthen organizational accountability in the process of adjusting to community needs? I administered a survey to collect self-report data on value congruence then conducted focus groups to facilitate discussion about value clarification and congruence. My results indicated that Panhellenic leaders strongly value feeling passionate and view commitment toward their organization as a key factor in adjusting to the needs of the community. However, their passion and commitment varied depending on each leader’s relationship to other leaders, traditions held, and behaviors modeled in the organization. Suggested future research could examine national and university advisor involvement in maintaining traditional programs and encouraging innovative social change that aligns with organizational and community values

Differences and Similarities between Female Managers and Female Entrepreneurs

    Get PDF
Although the number of female entrepreneurs has recently increased, there is little research that has compared female managers and female entrepreneurs in their work experiences and conditions. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the potential differences and similarities between women in management versus women in entrepreneurship regarding challenges, motivators for entry, adaptations, gender roles, and self-monitoring. Data collected from 87 women in management and entrepreneurship showed that female managers faced gender biases more than did entrepreneurs and had to choose between their professional and their personal goals when deciding to have children. Motivators for entry into entrepreneurship were increased job autonomy and flexibility of schedule. Regarding adaptations, all managers and entrepreneurs changed their communication style according to an audience and relied on their social support systems to deal with household responsibilities and on mentors for professional issues. Lastly, entrepreneurs were higher self-monitors and more likely to be androgynous than women in management. There were no differences in adoption of a masculine gender role between the two groups. Results of the present study indicate that these two groups of professional women have similar as well as different experiences and conditions. The implications of these findings are discussed
