    “Tree plastic bark" consiste en la realización de una intervención artística en un entorno natural concreto, generando de esta manera un Site Specific(1). Como hace alusión Rosalind Krauss en sus reflexiones “La escultura en el campo expandido”(2), comenta que su origen esta claramente ligado con el concepto de monumentalidad. La escultura es un monumento, se crea para conmemorar algún hecho o personaje relevante y está realizada para una ubicación concreta. La investigación parte de la idea de crear una pieza escultórica que plantea una reflexión sobre la contaminación y el reciclaje, representada por un conjunto de árboles elaborado con bolsas de plástico recicladas(3) y reutilizadas(4) generando así una descontextualización del material. Este proceso de intervención de ida y vuelta parte de la recuperación de las bolsas de plástico del propio medio donde se realiza la intervención, que tras ser tratadas, vuelven al medio de donde se recogieron aportando otro significado, convirtiendo el material residual contaminante en materia reciclada, transformada y empleada como pieza artística. Los juegos de texturas que se crean, las dimensiones, y el color blanco, el cual genera gran contraste con el entorno natural, hace de “Tree plastic bark" una intervención impactante dentro del entorno natural, la cual origina sensaciones e invita a reflexionar

    The establishment of an engineering accreditation agency in Spain

    RESUMEN. Las ingenierías constituyen una singularidad en los sistemas universitarios en todo el mundo. Fundamentalmente por la estrecha relación que tienen los estudios con las profesiones y con la responsabilidad que deriva de una actividad profesional cada día más compleja. Esto se amplifica con la reforma de Bolonia, que está ocurriendo en paralelo con un cambio económico y social profundo. La calidad de la educación superior es un asunto complicado especialmente cuando los sistemas educativos y acreditadores dependen de los gobiernos. La experiencia dice que en estos casos las entidades que garantizan la calidad tienen que dar respuestas válidas para los distintos campos de estudio con procesos y mecanismos generales que no permiten contemplar las múltiples peculiaridades de cada uno de ellos. Además esta dependencia gubernamental impide que los entes acreditadores puedan establecer acuerdos internacionales de reconocimiento multilateral con otras organizaciones de prestigio. Las ingenierías españolas están sufriendo algunas contradicciones pues a pesar del prestigio que tienen, se están encontrando internacionalmente con un reconocimiento académico y profesional insuficiente. En este artículo se reflexiona sobre la posibilidad de crear una agencia específica de acreditación para las ingenierías en España, analizando su compatibilidad con la legislación española y su posible aceptación e integración en los sistemas universitarios y profesionales.ABSTRACT. Engineering subjects take up a unique position within university systems around the world, essentially on account of the close relation between the studies and eventual professions and the responsibility that arises from an ever-increasingly complex professional activity. This is further heightened by the Bologna reforms taking place in the midst of wide-ranging economic and social changes. The quality of higher education is a complex matter, particularly when the educational and credit systems depend on government authorities. Experience shows that in these cases the organizations guaranteeing quality have to give a valid response to the different fields of study by using general processes and systems that fail to consider the multiple peculiarities of each area. This government dependency also prevents accreditation organizations from establishing international multilateral recognition agreements with other prestigious organizations. Spanish engineering studies are subject to certain contradictions and in spite of the esteem in which they are held, these are now gaining insufficient international academic and professional recognition. This article considers the possibility of creating a specific accreditation agency for engineering programmes in Spain and examines its compatibility with Spanish legislation and potential acceptance and incorporation within university and professional systems

    Palaeostress and geotectonic interpretation of the Alpine Cycle onset in the Sierra del Guadarrama (eastern Iberian Central System), based on evidence from episyenites

    Several episodes of hydrothermal activity related to periods of fracturing and/or reactivation of previous structures took place from 300 to - at least - 100 Ma, in the Sierra del Guadarrama, which is part of the crystalline axis of the Iberian Hercynian Fold Belt (Central-Iberian Zone). One of these episodes led to the formation of episyenites, which are de-quartzified and alkalinized granites. Episyenite formation took place on a regional scale and in a short period (approx. at 277 Ma). The episyenites were formed by the action of fluids at temperatures between 350°C and 650°C, at depths of about 6.5 km, and in microfractured dilatancy zones developed under a regional extensional regime. These zones are crosscut by normal faults, developed during the progressive deformation process accompanying the formation of the episyenites. The calculated regional palaeostress tensor has ~r I close to vertical and σ3 between NI0-20E and an average value of the stress ratio (Ф) of 0.19 [Ф = (σ2 - σ3)/(σ1 - σ3)]. Because σ1 is close to vertical the stress tensor is compatible with an extensional deformation field. The analysis also shows that most of the faults that slip under this stress field have an average coefficient of friction of 0.8. This extensional regime was probably accompanied by a regional thermal anomaly, as suggested by the high temperature of the fluids involved, which are amagmatic. This thermo-tectonic episode is interpreted as representative of the generalized extensional regime corresponding to the onset of the Alpine Cycle. The episode was preceded by a wrench-faulting event, equivalent to the Late Variscan event of Arthaud and Matte (1977), for which an age of - at least - 300-290 Ma is indicated by recent radiometric data. In its turn, this event was preceded by the regional extensional gravitative collapse of the Hercynian orogen. A correlation between evidence from the cover (stratigraphy and volcanism) and evidence from the basement (hydrothermal alterations, dyke injection episodes and granitic magmatism) is attempted on the basis of new available radiometric data

    Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a non-Langerhans’ histiocytosis and a very rare multisystemic disease of unknown aetiology, with skeletal involvement of the long bones and in more than 50% of cases with extraskeletal involvement. The disease was described in 1930 by the anatomopathologist Jakob Erdheim and his student William Chester. More than 500 cases have since been reported. We report the case of a 77-year-old Italian woman with ECD who was admitted to hospital for acute cardiac tamponade. The patient presented with simultaneous cutaneous, retro-orbital, skeletal, cerebral and cardiovascular manifestations and was successfully treated with corticosteroids followed by interferon

    Smartphone-based cardiac implantable electronic device remote monitoring: improved compliance and connectivity

    Aims: Remote monitoring (RM) is the standard of care for follow up of patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices. The aim of this study was to compare smartphone-based RM (SM-RM) using patient applications (myMerlinPulse™ app) with traditional bedside monitor RM (BM-RM). Methods and results: The retrospective study included de-identified US patients who received either SM-RM or BM-RM capable of implantable cardioverter defibrillators or cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators (Abbott, USA). Patients in SM-RM and BM-RM groups were propensity-score matched on age and gender, device type, implant year, and month. Compliance with RM was quantified as the proportion of patients enrolling in the RM system (Merlin.net™) and transmitting data at least once. Connectivity was measured by the median number of days between consecutive transmissions per patient. Of the initial 9714 patients with SM-RM and 26 679 patients with BM-RM, 9397 patients from each group were matched. Remote monitoring compliance was higher in SM-RM; significantly more patients with SM-RM were enrolled in RM compared with BM-RM (94.4 vs. 85.0%, P < 0.001), similar number of patients in the SM-RM group paired their device (95.1 vs. 95.0%, P = 0.77), but more SM-RM patients transmitted at least once (98.1 vs. 94.3%, P < 0.001). Connectivity was significantly higher in the SM-RM, with patients transmitting data every 1.2 (1.1, 1.7) vs. every 1.7 (1.5, 2.0) days with BM-RM (P < 0.001) and remained better over time. Significantly more SM-RM patients utilized patient-initiated transmissions compared with BM-RM (55.6 vs. 28.1%, P < 0.001). Conclusion: In this large real-world study, patients with SM-RM demonstrated improved compliance and connectivity compared with BM-RM

    High-throughput mapping of cell wall glycans to unveil cell wall disassembly, a key process determining strawberry fruit softening

    The short shelf life of strawberry fruit is a major limitation that produces important economic losses related to postharvest spoiling. Fruit texture of fleshy fruits is a complex trait but mainly rely on mechanical properties of parenchyma cell walls. Several studies support the relevance of cell wall modifying enzymes on cell wall deconstruction, decreasing cell wall strength and cell to cell adhesion, and ultimately producing the softening of the fruit at macroscopic level. Previous studies on our group showed that transgenic silencing of ripening-specific genes encoding some of these enzymes reduced softening and increased postharvest shelf life in strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa, cv. ‘Chandler’) fruits. In this research, to further investigate the cell wall remodelling process associated to strawberry softening a high-throughput analysis of cell wall composition based on monoclonal antibodies against different polysaccharide epitopes has been performed. To this purpose, cell walls were isolated from non-transgenic fruits at different developmental stages as well as from ripe fruits of selected transgenic lines with genes involved in metabolism of pectins (pectate lyase, polygalacturonase, β-galactosidase, pectin acetil esterase), hemicellulose/cellulose (endo-β-glucanase) or lignin (cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase) down-regulated. These transgenic lines showed a large variability in fruit firmness at ripening. Cell walls were fractionated and subjected to a carbohydrate microarray. The results obtained unveiled a common pattern of cell wall composition on those transgenic lines with firmer phenotypes, specially defined by the higher content of pectins on those cell wall fractions more imbricated in the matrix, which can be interpreted as a less degraded cell wall structure.This research was supported by FEDER EU Funds and the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad of Spain (grant reference AGL2017-86531-C2-1-R).     Downregulation of NAC transcription factors modifies cell wall composition and increases strawberry fruit firmness

    The strawberry is a soft fruit with a very short post-harvest shelf life. The changes in texture during fruit ripening are mainly due to the dissolution of the middle lamellae, reducing cell-to-cell adhesion, and the weakening of parenchymal cell walls as result of the action of cell wall modifying enzymes. At present, no master regulator of this process has been discovered yet. NAC transcription factors have been involved in numerous physiological processes, including fruit ripening. In strawberry, the NAC family comprises more than 110 genes, and at least 6 of them are expressed during fruit development. In this research, we performed a functional analysis of two ripening-related NAC genes, FaNAC2 and FaNAC3, in Fragaria x ananassa Duch. cv. Chandler. Several RNAi transgenic lines showing low FaNAC2 or FaNAC3 mRNA levels in fruit were obtained through Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. These lines produced fruits significantly firmer than control at the ripe stage, being the increase in firmness higher in FaNAC2 silenced plants. Cell walls were extracted from ripe transgenic fruits and characterized by ELISA and Epitope Detection Chromatography (EDC), using monoclonal antibodies against different polysaccharide epitopes. FaNAC2 transgenic lines showed more extensive changes than FaNAC3; these modifications involved increased amounts of demethylated pectins (LM19) in water and CDTA fractions and an alteration of the lateral branches of RG-I, decreasing the amount of arabinan epitopes and increasing galactan epitopes detected by LM6 and LM5, respectively. The amount of arabinogalactan proteins recognized by the JIM13 antibody was also affected, decreasing in the Na2CO3 fraction and increasing in the 4M KOH and cellulase fraction of the transgenic lines.The results obtained indicate that NAC genes could be involved in the regulation of cell wall disassembly associated to strawberry fruit softening.Universidad de Málaga.     Mammalian turnover as an indicator of climatic and anthropogenic landscape modification: A new Meghalayan record (Late Holocene) in northern Iberia

    The Punta Lucero III cave is a natural trap where abundant vertebrate remains were accumulated during the Meghalayan (Late Holocene). To better understand the paleoenvironmental conditions in which this record was accumulated, the micromammal assemblage, comprising a minimum number of 1396 individuals belonging to 19 taxa, was studied using the Mutual Ecogeographic Range and the Habitat Weighting Method. Throughout ~2600 years, the micromammal community's quick turnover reflected a shift from patchy forests and humid meadows to open, shrubbier grasslands. The Late Holocene Thermal Maximum's humid and mild climatic conditions underwent a cooling and aridification phase, coeval with the Iron Age Cold Epoch. These concluded in a slight temperature rising, coeval with the Roman Warm Period. Macromammals experienced a shift from wild populations to domestic herds. Therefore, this work discusses a broader context for this mammalian turnover from a human cultural perspective.AB.M-A. developed part of this research as part of the ERC Consolidator Grant (SUBSILIENCE ref. 818299).     Length of hospital stay for elective electrophysiological procedures: a survey from the European Heart Rhythm Association

    AIMS: Electrophysiological (EP) operations that have traditionally involved long hospital lengths of stay (LOS) are now being undertaken as day case procedures. The coronavirus disease-19 pandemic served as an impetus for many centres to shorten LOS for EP procedures. This survey explores LOS for elective EP procedures in the modern era. METHODS AND RESULTS: An online survey consisting of 27 multiple-choice questions was completed by 245 respondents from 35 countries. With respect to de novo cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) implantations, day case procedures were reported for 79.5% of implantable loop recorders, 13.3% of pacemakers (PMs), 10.4% of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), and 10.2% of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices. With respect to CIED generator replacements, day case procedures were reported for 61.7% of PMs, 49.2% of ICDs, and 48.2% of CRT devices. With regard to ablations, day case procedures were reported for 5.7% of atrial fibrillation (AF) ablations, 10.7% of left-sided ablations, and 17.5% of right-sided ablations. A LOS ≥ 2 days for CIED implantation was reported for 47.7% of PM, 54.5% of ICDs, and 56.9% of CRT devices and for 54.5% of AF ablations, 42.2% of right-sided ablations, and 46.1% of left-sided ablations. Reimbursement (43-56%) and bed availability (20-47%) were reported to have no consistent impact on the organization of elective procedures. CONCLUSION: There is a wide variation in the LOS for elective EP procedures. The LOS for some procedures appears disproportionate to their complexity. Neither reimbursement nor bed availability consistently influenced LOS
