    Get PDF

    Get PDF
This article focuses on the urban drift in a pedagogical context. For this purpose, the town of Caminha is used for artistic practice and space for experimentation exercises while providing analysis of the urban space. Through mobile technology, using smartphones and tablets as tools, a locative media art approach is implemented to instigate the experimentation of the urban spaces and exploration of urban drift via an urban apprehension exercise and mapping of locative narratives. Based on theoretical research and empirical analysis of current augmented reality technologies, this article attempts to show the role of locative media art in the experiencing of urban spaces and the preservation of memories. Furthermore, it taps into the discovery and sharing of georeferenced narratives by putting them into context and embodying them in their physical space

Instalação de arte digital publicada nas atas da 8th International Conference on Digital Arts – ARTECH 2017, realizada em Macau de 6-8 de setembro de 2017This digital art installation has as main goal to introduce an interface through which the image of the city of Oporto (in Northern Portugal) is designed and activated by the presence of one or more people standing in the exhibition space. It brings up the metaphor of the city as a living organism allowing visitors to explore, at different levels, several features very typical of this city. A diversity of possible routes is embedded in the outfit and activated as visitors move across the exhibition space, revealing experiences by means of projected videos related to the cultural specificity of the city. In this way, as the human body interacts with the space and the screen, uncovering stories, memories, expressions, sounds, colours, textures, new designs and emotions are presented in the form of videos that narrate life fragments of Oporto and its people. Being supported by a mix of audio-visual records, FeelOpo intends to build "the beat of Oporto" through striking visual narratives.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Perceptions of the skills of graduates in the library and information science and technology degree of P. Porto, Portugal: A Statistical Data Analysis of the Alignment Between Students, Teachers, and Employers

    Get PDF
Objective – The objective of this research was to identify the four professional competences of graduates in Library and Information Sciences and Technologies (LIST) considered most pertinent, from the points of view of students, teachers, and employers. We also sought to compare the perceptions of the different groups. The study was based on the premise that alignment of these perceptions may enhance the employability of LIST graduates. Methods – A questionnaire, used and validated by Arias-Coello et al. (2014), was further translated by Martins and Carvalho (2018). The questionnaire consisted of a set of questions regarding four dimensions: Information Management; Communication and Interpersonal Relationships; Domain and Application of Information Technologies; Organization Management. We sent the survey by email to the target audience; it was available to complete in April and May 2018. Data analysis included calculating mean and standard deviation, as well as Shapiro Wilk normality tests, statistical tests for multiple comparisons, ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis test, Friedman test, Wilcoxon test, and Pearson's correlation. Results – In relation to certain dimensions, one could think that age would be a determining factor, but this has not been proved. In fact, results showed that age is not a factor that influenced the importance attributed to different competences in the several dimensions. The respondents' academic degrees and areas of knowledge were linked to significant differences transversally. The Kruskal Wallis test indicated that students, teachers, and employers perceived the importance of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) skills equally. As for the other competences, overall there were significant differences between students and employers, and there were significant differences between students and teachers regarding the perceived importance of organization management skills. There were also significant differences between teachers, students, and employers regarding the perceived importance of communication skills. We also found that responses within the teacher group had less dispersion of answers, therefore there was greater internal agreement. The opposite occurred in the employer group. Conclusion – The differences detected in the perception of the different groups were minor. However, it is necessary to create initiatives for the alignment of the perceptions of students and employers, because if all groups have the same perception, they will develop and value the same skills, responding to the needs of the labor market, thus promoting the employability of LIST graduates. The inclusion of a curricular internship, even one of short duration, in the first year of the degree could also be a way of endeavoring to bring together the expectations of both groups. These suggestions are part of a proposal to change and update the study plan and enhance the performance of course management.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A Diachronic Comparative Study Between Portugal And Brazil

    Get PDF
UIDB/00749/2020 UIDP/00749/2020Brazil and Portugal are two countries that, although geographically located on different continents, share a history (from 1500 to 1822 when Brazil was a Portuguese colony) and the same language (Portuguese), and both have very high rates of domestic violence and situations of gender inequality. Growing fundamentalist and ultraconservative parties around the world are threatening gender equality and women’s conquest for rights. In Portugal and Brazil, new parties with extremist discourses and ideologies that perpetuate patriarchal societies are also growing. It is crucial to continue breaking paradigms and remembering history, particularly the moments marked by the struggle for human rights. Many women have fought for their rights, advocated for gender equality, and worked toward building women’s citizenship in and through education. Looking particularly at Brazil’s post-independence period, we conducted a diachronic comparative study of feminist activist artists from these two countries and found inspiring examples of feminine resistance and resilience. We analysed different female approaches that surprised us with their originality and creativity. We looked at the similarities and differences between how Portuguese and Brazilian women with access to culture and art—painting, music, literature, etc.—positioned and manifested themselves in the face of these social and cultural inequalities in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The women artists that we studied have reached professional status as artists, which has allowed them to become financially independent. Thus, they have been able to leave the private sphere and enter the public and international sphere.publishersversionpublishe

    Get PDF
The interest for the analysis of urban spaces through communicational mobile devices (digital means) aiming their transformation with the collaborative participation of the population- is the general framework of the investigation. The artistic practices, complemented with cities’ studying methods (capable of approaching its complexity in a multi-operative and flexible way) were inserted in the research keeping in mind the marked development those have known for the actual understanding of the urban condition. The result focus the hybridization of processes that allow the addition of collective knowledge about urban structures, expressed in dynamic maps that promote enlarged readings of urban realities. Based on theoretical framing and subsequent revision of literature (including subject areas of locative media art, urban analysis and dynamic map) the development of two complementary artefacts occurred, which elaboration implied three stages: i) pre-production; ii) production; iii) post-production. On the first, the artefacts were conceptualized, defining criteria and specifying analysis parameters. The Programs/software to be used was also taken into consideration, as well as the selection of urban actors that participated in experiences associated to the investigation. In what production is concerned, several actions of appropriation and apprehension of urban spaces selected in the Vila of Caminha, using the technique of walking mediated by technology were used. On the third stage, the information obtained was structured, analyzed, compared and systematized. Marks and appropriations were identified in the Vila of Caminha, integrating approaches of locative media art, of urban morphology and digital technologies. Using this methodology, the response to the objectives of the investigation contributes to the correction of the gap of the art state, due to the relevant demonstration of the operative convergence between urban apprehension and informational and communicational fluxes for the revealing of everyday spacing urban experiences (past and present) that occur concerning the physical structure of the cities. Summing up, artistic practices, derived from locative media art, express - in dynamic map and through the enlarged reality- the collective devir of urban experiences in the spaces of the city, adding up stories to its memory and urban history
