Abstract: This study was conducted to evaluate two sorghum hybrids under two grazing frequencies (60 and 80 cm of canopy height), managed under intermittent stocking with sheep. The experiment was conducted at Núcleo de Ensino e Estudos em Forragicultura - NEEF/DZ/CCA/UF, Fortaleza - CE. The treatments were combinations between two hybrids of Sorghum bicolor and S. sudanense (BR007A x TX2785 and CMSXS157A x TX2785, named hybrids BR and CM, respectively) and two grazing frequencies (60 and 80 cm of canopy height), in a randomized block design with a 2x2 factorial arrangement, with four replications, totaling 16 experimental units of 100 m². The defoliation was carried out by Morada Nova sheep, managed under intermittent stocking. The morphogenetic characteristics evaluated included: LER1/LER2 ratio, leaf elongation rate, stem elongation rate, phyllochron, leaf life span, anterior and posterior leaf senescence rates and total and green forage accumulation rates. The following variables were evaluated in the pre-grazing: canopy height, leaf area index, photosynthetically active radiation interception, tiller population density, number of new leaves per tiller, leaf blade length and grazing horizon. Also evaluated were: total forage biomass (TFB), green forage biomass (GFB), green leaf biomass (GLB), green stem biomass (GSB), dead forage biomass (DFM) and leaf/stem (L/S) ratio. There was a greater (P<0.05) resting period in the first regrowth cycle in relation to cycles 2 and 3 in all the adopted managements. The LER1/LER2 ratio was superior (P<0.05) in the pastures under CMx80 management in comparison to the other treatments. The CM hybrid pastures at both frequencies presented larger (P<0.05) leaf elongation rate. The stem elongation rate and the phyllochron were higher (P<0.05) in the BR hybrid pastures and at the 80 cm frequency. The leaf life span was superior (P<0.05) in the BR hybrid pastures and at the 60 cm frequency. The CMx80 management showed higher (P<0.05) anterior leaf senescence rate. The posterior leaf senescence rate was higher (P<0.05) in the CM hybrid pastures and at the 80 cm frequency. The CMx60 management showed lower (P<0.05) total forage accumulation rate. Larger (P<0.05) green forage accumulation rate were observed in the BRx60 and CMx80 managements. Higher (P<0.05) leaf area index were observed to BR hybrid pastures. The CMx60 management presented higher photosynthetically active radiation interception and grazing horizon than the other treatments. The BR hybrid presented higher (P<0.05) tiller population density in the two grazing frequencies. The number of new leaves per tiller and the leaf blade length were higher (P<0.05) in the CMx80 management. Larger (P<0.05) values of TFB, GFB and GSB were observed in BR hybrid pastures and in the 80 cm frequency. The GLB revealed lower (P<0.05) value in the pastures under CMx60 management. The pastures managed with 60 cm presented higher (P<0.05) DFB. The L/S ratio revealed lower (P<0.05) values in BR hybrid grasses in both frequencies. The CM hybrid managed with 60 cm height is the best management option, showing good accessibility of the animals to this grazing horizon and less difficulty in harvesting this forage by grazing sheep.
16 e 12%
Effect of dairy effluents pre-treatment on N2O emissions and N-organic degradation after soil application
Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas that plays a key role in climatic forcing
contributing to the greenhouse effect by about 4 %, and also contributes to stratospheric
ozone depletion. Cattle slurries are commonly applied to agricultural soils, inducing an
increase of soil nitrous oxide emissions. Therefore, many procedures were developed for
slurry pre-treatment in order to improve soil slurry application and reduce nitrogen
losses, namely N2O emissions.
The aim of this work was to compare N2O emissions and the kinetic of N organic
degradation from treated and untreated cattle-slurry after its incorporation in agricultural
soils
Chapter 16 Volcanic hazard vulnerability on São Miguel Island, Azores
AbstractIn recent years much progress has been made in researching a wide variety of extreme events on São Miguel. In addition there are a number of volcano-related risks that impact upon the people of São Miguel. Some of these may occur both before and during volcanic emergencies (e.g. earthquakes), whilst others render São Miguel dangerous even when its volcanoes are not erupting (e.g. flooding, landslides, tsunamis and health impacts, especially the effects of CO2seepage into dwellings). In this chapter we first define what vulnerability means to the people of São Miguel, and relate this to the cultural and economic characteristics of the island. The following aspects of vulnerability are discussed: (a) physical (i.e. housing, settlement and the characteristics of evacuation routes and plans); (b) demographic and economic; and (c) social and cultural and perceptual (i.e. whether people have an accurate cognition of risk). Particular areas of concern relate to housing: the identification of isolated dwellings that would be difficult to evacuate; the vulnerability/resilience of evacuation routes following recent infrastructure improvements; characteristics of the island's transient population; management of livestock under emergency conditions; local leadership roles; and educational outreach.</jats:p
Influence of two nitrification inhibitors (DCD and DMPP) on annual ryegrass yield and soil mineral N dynamics after incorporation with cattle slurry
Nitrogen (N) losses through nitrate leaching, occurring after slurry
spreading, can be reduced by the use of nitrification inhibitors (NIs) such as
dicyandiamide (DCD) and 3,4-dimethyl pyrazole phosphate (DMPP). In the
present work, the effects of DCD and DMPP, applied at two rates with cattle
slurry, on soil mineral N profiles, annual ryegrass yield, and N uptake were
compared under similar pedoclimatic conditions. Both NIs delayed the nitrate
formation in soil; however, DMPP ensured that the soil mineral N was
predominantly in the ammonium form rather than in the nitrate form for about
100 days, whereas with DCD such effect was observed only during the first 40
days after sowing. Furthermore, the use of NIs led to an increase of the drymatter
(DM) yields in a range of 32–54% and of the forage N removal in a range
of 34–68% relative to the slurry-only (SO) treatment (without NIs). A DM yield
of 8698 kg ha21 was obtained with the DMPP applied at the greater rate against
only 7444 kg ha21 obtained with the greater rate of DCD (4767 kg ha21 in the SO
treatment). Therefore, it can be concluded that DMPP is more efficient as an NI
than DCD when combined with cattle slurr
The motion of two masses coupled to a massive spring
We discuss the classical motion of a spring of arbitrary mass coupled to two
arbitrary massive blocks attached at its ends. A general approach to the
problem is presented and some general results are obtained. Examples for which
a simple elastic function can be inferred are discussed and the normal modes
and normal frequencies obtained. An approximation procedure to the evaluation
of the normel frequencies in the case of uniform elastic function and mass
density is also discussed.Comment: Standard Latex file plus three eps figure
Controlling a resonant transmission across the -potential: the inverse problem
Recently, the non-zero transmission of a quantum particle through the
one-dimensional singular potential given in the form of the derivative of
Dirac's delta function, , with , being a
potential strength constant, has been discussed by several authors. The
transmission occurs at certain discrete values of forming a resonance
set . For
this potential has been shown to be a perfectly reflecting wall. However, this
resonant transmission takes place only in the case when the regularization of
the distribution is constructed in a specific way. Otherwise, the
-potential is fully non-transparent. Moreover, when the transmission
is non-zero, the structure of a resonant set depends on a regularizing sequence
that tends to in the sense of
distributions as . Therefore, from a practical point of
view, it would be interesting to have an inverse solution, i.e. for a given
to construct such a regularizing sequence
that the -potential at this value is
transparent. If such a procedure is possible, then this value
has to belong to a corresponding resonance set. The present paper is devoted to
solving this problem and, as a result, the family of regularizing sequences is
constructed by tuning adjustable parameters in the equations that provide a
resonance transmission across the -potential.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures. Corrections to the published version added;
