Simulations of the Micro-Bunching Instability for SOLEIL and KARA Using Two Different VFP Solver Codes

    Get PDF
The longitudinal dynamics of a bunched electron beam is an important aspect in the study of existing and the development of new electron storage rings. The dynamics depend on different beam parameters as well as on the interaction of the beam with its surroundings. A well established method for calculating the resulting dynamics is to numerically solve the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation. Depending on the chosen parameters and the considered wakefields and impedances, different effects can be studied. One common application is the investigation of the longitudinal micro-wave and micro-bunching instabilities. The latter occurs for short electron bunches due to self-interaction with their own emitted coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR). In this contribution, two different VFP solvers are used to simulate the longitudinal dynamics with a focus on the micro-bunching instability at the Soleil synchrotron and the KIT storage ring KARA (Karlsruhe Research Accelerator)

    Multi-photon, multi-mode polarization entanglement in parametric down-conversion

    Get PDF
We study the quantum properties of the polarization of the light produced in type II spontaneous parametric down-conversion in the framework of a multi-mode model valid in any gain regime. We show that the the microscopic polarization entanglement of photon pairs survives in the high gain regime (multi-photon regime), in the form of nonclassical correlation of all the Stokes operators describing polarization degrees of freedom

Polarization quantum properties in type-II Optical Parametric Oscillator below threshold

We study the far field spatial distribution of the quantum fluctuations in the transverse profile of the output light beam generated by a type II Optical Parametric Oscillator below threshold, including the effects of transverse walk-off. We study how quadrature field correlations depend on the polarization. We find spatial EPR entanglement in quadrature-polarization components: For the far field points not affected by walk-off there is almost complete noise suppression in the proper quadratures difference of any orthogonal polarization components. We show the entanglement of the state of symmetric intense, or macroscopic, spatial light modes. We also investigate nonclassical polarization properties in terms of the Stokes operators. We find perfect correlations in all Stokes parameters measured in opposite far field points in the direction orthogonal to the walk-off, while locally the field is unpolarized and we find no polarization squeezing.Comment: 16 pages, 18 figure

Terahertz sampling rates with photonic time-stretch for electron beam diagnostics

    Get PDF
To understand the underlying complex beam dynamics in electron storage rings often large numbers of single-shot measurements must be acquired continuously over a long period of time with extremely high temporal resolution. Photonic time-stretch is a measurement method that is able to overcome speed limitations of conventional digitizers and enable continuous ultra-fast single-shot terahertz spectroscopy with rates of trillions of consecutive frames. In this contribution, a novel ultra-fast data sampling system based on photonic time-stretch is presented and the performance is discussed. THERESA (TeraHErtz REadout SAmpling) is a data acquisition system based on the recent ZYNQ-RFSoC family. THERESA has been developed with an analog bandwidth of up to 20 GHz and a sampling rate of up to 90 GS s−1. When combined with the photonic time-stretch setup, the system will be able to sample a THz signal with an unprecedented frame rate of 8 Tf s−1. Continuous acquisition for long observation times will open up new possibilities in the detection of rare events in accelerator physics

Method for determining antiphase dynamics in a multimode laser

We measure the cross spectrum of the intensity fluctuations of pairs of modes for a multilongitudinal mode neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser operating in the steady state regime. From the data we build up a picture of how the longitudinal mode fluctuations interfere and directly show the antiphase dynamics of the intensity fluctuations.T. Hill, L. Stamatescu and M. W. Spatial correlations in hexagons generated via a Kerr nonlinearity

    Get PDF
We consider the hexagonal pattern forming in the cross-section of an optical beam produced by a Kerr cavity, and we study the quantum correlations characterizing this structure. By using arguments related to the symmetry broken by the pattern formation, we identify a complete scenario of six-mode entanglement. Five independent phase quadratures combinations, connecting the hexagonal modes, are shown to exhibit sub-shot-noise fluctuations. By means of a non-linear quantum calculation technique, quantum correlations among the mode photon numbers are demonstrated and calculated.Comment: ReVTeX file, 20 pages, 7 eps figure

A NEW SCHEME FOR ELECTRO-OPTIC SAMPLING AT RECORD REPETITION RATES: PRINCIPLE AND APPLICATION TO THE FIRST (TURN-BY-TURN) RECORDINGS OF THz CSR BURSTS AT SOLEIL

    Get PDF
Abstract The microbunching instability is an ubiquitous problem in storage rings at high current density. However, the involved fast time-scales hampered the possibility to make direct real-time recordings of theses structures. When the structures occur at a cm scale, recent works at UVSOR [1], revealed that direct recording of the coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) electric field with ultra-high speed electronics (17 ps) provides extremely precious informations on the microbunching dynamics. However, when CSR occurs at THz frequencies (and is thus out of reach of electronics), the problem remained largely open. Here we present a new opto-electronic strategy that enabled to record series of successive electric field pulses shapes with picosecond resolution (including carrier and envelope), every 12 ns, over a total duration of several milliseconds. We also present the first experimental results obtained with this method at Synchrotron SOLEIL, above the microbunching instability threshold. The method can be applied to the detection of ps electric fields in other situations where high repetition rate is also an issue
