Reply to Farine and Aplin: Chimpanzees choose their association and interaction partners
Farine and Aplin (1) question the validity of our study reporting group-specific social dynamics in chimpanzees (2). As alternative to our approach, Farine and Aplin advance a “prenetwork permutation” methodology that tests against random assortment (3). We appreciate Farine and Aplin’s interest and applied their suggested approaches to our data. The new analyses revealed highly similar results to those of our initial approach. We further dispel Farine and Aplin’s critique by outlining its incompatibility to our study system, methodology, and analysis.First, when we apply the suggested prenetwork permutation to our proximity dataset, we again find significant population-level differences in association rates, while controlling for population size [as derived from Farine and Aplin’s script (4); original result, P < 0.0001; results including prenetwork permutation, P < 0.0001]. Ultra-nonlocality in density functional theory for photo-emission spectroscopy
We derive an exact expression for the photo-current of photo-emission
spectroscopy using time-dependent current density functional theory (TDCDFT).
This expression is given as an integral over the Kohn-Sham spectral function
renormalized by effective potentials that depend on the exchange-correlation
kernel of current density functional theory. We analyze in detail the physical
content of this expression by making a connection between the
density-functional expression and the diagrammatic expansion of the
photo-current within many-body perturbation theory. We further demonstrate that
the density functional expression does not provide us with information on the
kinetic energy distribution of the photo-electrons. Such information can, in
principle, be obtained from TDCDFT by exactly modeling the experiment in which
the photo-current is split into energy contributions by means of an external
electromagnetic field outside the sample, as is done in standard detectors. We
find, however, that this procedure produces very nonlocal correlations between
the exchange-correlation fields in the sample and the detector.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure
Evaluation of a multimode fiber optic low coherence interferometer for path length resolved Doppler measurements of diffuse light \ud
The performance of a graded index multimode fiber optic low coherence Mach-Zehnder interferometer with phase modulation is analyzed. Investigated aspects were its ability to measure path length distributions and to perform path length resolved Doppler measurements of multiple scattered photons in a turbid suspension of particles undergoing Brownian and translational motion. The path length resolution of this instrument is compared with a system using single mode fibers for illumination and detection. The optical path lengths are determined from the zero order moment of the phase modulation peak in the power spectrum. Conservatism and “copy-if-better” in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes)
This work was funded by the project SOMICS, ERC-Synergy grant # 609819 to Josep Call.Social learning is predicted to evolve in socially living animals provided the learning process is not random but biased by certain socio-ecological factors. One bias of particular interest for the emergence of (cumulative) culture is the tendency to forgo personal behaviour in favour of relatively better variants observed in others, also known as the "copy-if-better" strategy. We investigated whether chimpanzees employ copy-if-better in a simple token-exchange paradigm controlling for individual and random social learning. After being trained on one token-type, subjects were confronted with a conspecific demonstrator who either received the same food reward as the subject (control condition) or a higher value food reward than the subject (test condition) for exchanging another token-type. In general, the chimpanzees persisted in exchanging the token-type they were trained on individually, indicating a form of conservatism consistent with previous studies. However, the chimpanzees were more inclined to copy the demonstrator in the test compared to the control condition, indicating a tendency to employ a copy-if-better strategy. Combining Hebbian and reinforcement learning in a minibrain model
A toy model of a neural network in which both Hebbian learning and
reinforcement learning occur is studied. The problem of `path interference',
which makes that the neural net quickly forgets previously learned input-output
relations is tackled by adding a Hebbian term (proportional to the learning
rate ) to the reinforcement term (proportional to ) in the learning
rule. It is shown that the number of learning steps is reduced considerably if
, i.e., if the Hebbian term is neither too small nor too
large compared to the reinforcement term
Nuclear collisions at the Future Circular Collider
The Future Circular Collider is a new proposed collider at CERN with
centre-of-mass energies around 100 TeV in the pp mode. Ongoing studies aim at
assessing its physics potential and technical feasibility. Here we focus on
updates in physics opportunities accessible in pA and AA collisions not covered
in previous Quark Matter contributions, including Quark-Gluon Plasma and gluon
saturation studies, novel hard probes of QCD matter, and photon-induced

A charged particle in a magnetic field - Jarzynski Equality
We describe some solvable models which illustrate the Jarzynski theorem and
related fluctuation theorems. We consider a charged particle in the presence of
magnetic field in a two dimensional harmonic well. In the first case the centre
of the harmonic potential is translated with a uniform velocity, while in the
other case the particle is subjected to an ac force. We show that Jarzynski
identity complements Bohr-van Leeuwen theorem on the absence of diamagnetism in
