    Digital numerically controlled oscillator

    The frequency and phase of an output signal from an oscillator circuit are controlled with accuracy by a digital input word. Positive and negative alterations in output frequency are both provided for by translating all values of input words so that they are positive. The oscillator reference frequency is corrected only in one direction, by adding phase to the output frequency of the oscillator. The input control word is translated to a single algebraic sign and the digital 1 is added thereto. The translated input control word is then accumulated. A reference clock signal having a frequency at an integer multiple of the desired frequency of the output signal is generated. The accumulated control word is then compared with a threshold level. The output signal is adjusted in a single direction by dividing the frequency of the reference clock signal by a first integer or by an integer different from the first integer

    Red wine quality and style: Diversities of composition and adverse influences from free SO2

    Relationships between wine colour composition and the overall quality rating were investigated by analyses of 404 young red wines in two varietal classes from three successive vintages. The wines, of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from 20 viticultural regions of Australia, had been presented for comparative assessment at the Adelaide Wine Shows of 1974-75-76. There was a large variability in all aspects of phenolic content, in wine colour density and tint, in pH, and in levels of total SO2 and free SO2. The latter was the major influence on pigment equilibria, in which there was up to 10-fold variation in the degree of ionisation of anthocyanins (a). Positive quality factors were wine colour density, the parameter a, coloured anthocyanins, total pigments and total phenolics. Negative factors included colour tint, free SO2 and total SO2. There was no correlation with wine pH. Wide variation in winemaking practice concerning the amount and timing of SO2 additions is considered to have been responsible for much of the range in quality within these groups of wines.QualitĂ€t und Nuance von Rotwein: Schwankungen der Zusammensetzung sowie nachteiliger Einfluß von freiem SO2 Anhand der Analysen von 404 jungen Rotweinen - zwei Sorten aus drei aufeinanderfolgenden JahrgĂ€ngen - wurden die Beziehungen zwischen den Komponenten der WeinfĂ€rbung und der Gesamtnote der sensorischen QualitĂ€tsprĂŒfung untersucht. Die Weine, Shiraz und Cabernet Sauvignon, waren bei den Adelaide Wine Shows 1974/75/76 zur vergleichenden Beurteilung angestellt worden. SĂ€mtliche Parameter des Phenolgehaltes, die FarbintensitĂ€t und -tönung, der pH-Wert sowie der Gehalt an Gesamt-SO2 und freiem SO2 zeigten eine betrĂ€chtliche VariabilitĂ€t. Das freie SO2 beeinflußte das Pigmentgleichgewicht am stĂ€rksten, wobei der Ionisationsgrad der Anthocyane (a) bis zu 10fach schwanken konnte. Positive QualitĂ€tsfaktoren waren: FarbintensitĂ€t, der Parameter a, gefĂ€rbte Anthocyane, Gesamtpigmente sowie Gesamtphenole. Zu den negativen Faktoren gehörten Farbtönung, freies SO2 und Gesamt-SO2. Keinerlei Korrelation bestand zum Wein-pH.     The effect of grapevine leafroll plus yellow speckle disease on annual growth, yield and quality of grapes from Cabernet Franc under two pruning systems

    The effects of two combinations of grapevine leafroll plus yellow speckle disease in two high-yielding Sultana selections (H4 and H5) on the performance of Cabernet Franc under two pruning methods were determined over 6 years. When averaged over the 6 years, H5 and H4 reduced the weight of annual growth by 21%and15 %, decreased the yield of fresh fruit by 9 % and 6 %, and depressed the sugar concentration of juice by 0.6 and 0.3 °Brix respectively. The titratable acidity and the pH of juice were slightly affected in some years. The number of inflorescences and mean berry weight were not affected by either virus source. When compared with spur pruning and averaged over the 4 years, cane-pruned vines produced less annual growth (21 % ), progressively less fresh fruit (16 % ), and had lighter berries (9 % ), but effects on the numbers of inflorescences and sugar content were inconsistent between years; the acidity and pH of juice were not affected. Canepruned vines had obviously inferior and more variable fruit-set. However, no visible differences in fruit-set due to the virus sources within each pruning method were detected.There was evidence of a low incidence of natural spread of yellow speckle, but not of leafroll.Holzproduktion sowie Traubenertrag und -qualitĂ€t von Cabernet Franc bei kombinierter Einwirkung von Leafroll und Yellow speckle disease in Verbindung mit zwei verschiedenen AnschnittsystemenZwei Kombinationen von Leafroll mit Yellow speckle disease wurden von den beiden ertragsstarken Sultana-Klonen H4 und H5 auf die Sorte Cabernet Franc, die auf Zapfen und auf Bogreben angeschnitten war, ĂŒbertragen. Der Einfluß der Infektion auf die LeistungsfĂ€higkeit dieser Sorte wurde ĂŒber einen Zeitraum von 6 Jahren verfolgt. Im Durchschnitt der 6 Jahre war nach der KrankheitsĂŒbertragung von den Infektionsquellen H5 und H4 das Gewicht des jĂ€hrlich produzierten Holzes um 21 bzw. 15 %, der Traubenertrag (Frischgewicht} um 9 bzw. 6 % und die Mostzuckerkonzentration um 0,6 bzw. 0,3 ° Bri.« verringert.     The influence of grape variety, soil type, climatic area and year of vintage on grape composition and wine quality was studied over a six-year period with three grape varieties in a eo-operative investigation. The wines were made under carefully controlled conditions to eliminate, as far as possible, any effect of winemaking technique. All viticultural and oenological treatments were replicated so that the data could be analysed statistically. When grapes from different viticultural areas were made into table wines, the quality of the wines was most closely related to grape variety, followed by climatic area and least of all by soil type.Reproducible differences in grape and wine composition were found for the grape varieties studied. For fhe same sugar content Riesling grapes and wine contained more acidity and a higher tartaric acid/malic acid ratio than Clare Riesling grapes and wine. They also contained less nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Shiraz grapes were relatively high in malic acid.The year of vintage strongly influenced the tartaric acid/malic acid ratio, particularly for Riesling and Clare Riesling, and also certain other constituents. Certain years could be designated as either high or low malic acid years for a particular grape variety.The soil type influenced the amounts of certain of the constituents of grapes and wine, but had no significant effects on the wine quality. Wines from the same varieties grown on two widely different soils in the same area could not be differentiated in replicated taste tests. The soil depth, drainage and waterholding capacity appeared to be more important than composition per se.Wines made from irrigated vineyards in the warm River Murray viticultural region, contained similar amounts of tartaric and malic acids, but were higher in pH, than wines made from the same grape varieties in the cooler non-irrigated Barossa Valley. Wines from irrigated grapes were generally of somewhat lower quality than those made from grapes of the same variety grown without irrigation in a cooler area. The time of harvesting irrigated grapes appeared to be critical to achieve the necessary balance between sugar, acid and flavour. Shiraz grapes grown under irrigation contained considerably less colour than grapes of the same variety grown without irrigation.Aroma was correlated with flavour in assessing wine quality, but numerical values ascribed to these parameters did not correlate generally with the wine constituents measured.     Magnetic variability in the young solar analog KIC 10644253: Observations from the Kepler satellite and the HERMES spectrograph

    The continuous photometric observations collected by the Kepler satellite over 4 years provide a whelm of data with an unequalled quantity and quality for the study of stellar evolution of more than 200000 stars. Moreover, the length of the dataset provide a unique source of information to detect magnetic activity and associated temporal variability in the acoustic oscillations. In this regards, the Kepler mission was awaited with great expectation. The search for the signature of magnetic activity variability in solar-like pulsations still remained unfruitful more than 2 years after the end of the nominal mission. Here, however, we report the discovery of temporal variability in the low-degree acoustic frequencies of the young (1 Gyr-old) solar analog KIC 10644253 with a modulation of about 1.5 years with significant temporal variations along the duration of the Kepler observations. The variations are in agreement with the derived photometric activity. The frequency shifts extracted for KIC 10644253 are shown to result from the same physical mechanisms involved in the inner sub-surface layers as in the Sun. In parallel, a detailed spectroscopic analysis of KIC 10644253 is performed based on complementary ground-based, high-resolution observations collected by the HERMES instrument mounted on the MERCATOR telescope. Its lithium abundance and chromospheric activity S-index confirm that KIC 10644253 is a young and more active star than the Sun.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 12 pages, 8 figure

    Standardizing Type Ia Supernova Absolute Magnitudes Using Gaussian Process Data Regression

    We present a novel class of models for Type Ia supernova time-evolving spectral energy distributions (SED) and absolute magnitudes: they are each modeled as stochastic functions described by Gaussian processes. The values of the SED and absolute magnitudes are defined through well-defined regression prescriptions, so that data directly inform the models. As a proof of concept, we implement a model for synthetic photometry built from the spectrophotometric time series from the Nearby Supernova Factory. Absolute magnitudes at peak BB brightness are calibrated to 0.13 mag in the gg-band and to as low as 0.09 mag in the z=0.25z=0.25 blueshifted ii-band, where the dispersion includes contributions from measurement uncertainties and peculiar velocities. The methodology can be applied to spectrophotometric time series of supernovae that span a range of redshifts to simultaneously standardize supernovae together with fitting cosmological parameters.Comment: 47 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication by Astrophysical Journa

    Atmospheric extinction properties above Mauna Kea from the Nearby Supernova Factory spectro-photometric data set

    We present a new atmospheric extinction curve for Mauna Kea spanning 3200--9700 \AA. It is the most comprehensive to date, being based on some 4285 standard star spectra obtained on 478 nights spread over a period of 7 years obtained by the Nearby SuperNova Factory using the SuperNova Integral Field Spectrograph. This mean curve and its dispersion can be used as an aid in calibrating spectroscopic or imaging data from Mauna Kea, and in estimating the calibration uncertainty associated with the use of a mean extinction curve. Our method for decomposing the extinction curve into physical components, and the ability to determine the chromatic portion of the extinction even on cloudy nights, is described and verified over the wide range of conditions sampled by our large dataset. We demonstrate good agreement with atmospheric science data obtain at nearby Mauna Loa Observatory, and with previously published measurements of the extinction above Mauna Kea.Comment: 22 pages, 24 figures, 6 table

    Measuring cosmic bulk flows with Type Ia Supernovae from the Nearby Supernova Factory

    Context. Our Local Group of galaxies appears to be moving relative to the cosmic microwave background with the source of the peculiar motion still uncertain. While in the past this has been studied mostly using galaxies as distance indicators, the weight of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) has increased recently with the continuously improving statistics of available low-redshift supernovae. Aims. We measured the bulk flow in the nearby universe (0.015<z<0.10.015 < z < 0.1) using 117 SNe Ia observed by the Nearby Supernova Factory, as well as the Union2 compilation of SN Ia data already in the literature. Methods. The bulk flow velocity was determined from SN data binned in redshift shells by including a coherent motion (dipole) in a cosmological fit. Additionally, a method of spatially smoothing the Hubble residuals was used to verify the results of the dipole fit. To constrain the location and mass of a potential mass concentration (e.g., the Shapley supercluster) responsible for the peculiar motion, we fit a Hubble law modified by adding an additional mass concentration. Results. The analysis shows a bulk flow that is consistent with the direction of the CMB dipole up to z∌0.06z \sim 0.06, thereby doubling the volume over which conventional distance measures are sensitive to a bulk flow. We see no significant turnover behind the center of the Shapley supercluster. A simple attractor model in the proximity of the Shapley supercluster is only marginally consistent with our data, suggesting the need for another, more distant source. In the redshift shell 0.06<z<0.10.06 < z < 0.1, we constrain the bulk flow velocity to <240 km s−1< 240~\textrm{km s}^{-1} (68% confidence level) for the direction of the CMB dipole, in contradiction to recent claims of the existence of a large-amplitude dark flow.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, added corrigendum (http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2015A%26A...578C...1F

    Host Galaxy Properties and Hubble Residuals of Type Ia Supernovae from the Nearby Supernova Factory

    We examine the relationship between Type Ia Supernova (SN Ia) Hubble residuals and the properties of their host galaxies using a sample of 115 SNe Ia from the Nearby Supernova Factory (SNfactory). We use host galaxy stellar masses and specific star-formation rates fitted from photometry for all hosts, as well as gas-phase metallicities for a subset of 69 star-forming (non-AGN) hosts, to show that the SN Ia Hubble residuals correlate with each of these host properties. With these data we find new evidence for a correlation between SN Ia intrinsic color and host metallicity. When we combine our data with those of other published SN Ia surveys, we find the difference between mean SN Ia brightnesses in low and high mass hosts is 0.077 +- 0.014 mag. When viewed in narrow (0.2 dex) bins of host stellar mass, the data reveal apparent plateaus of Hubble residuals at high and low host masses with a rapid transition over a short mass range (9.8 <= log(M_*/M_Sun) <= 10.4). Although metallicity has been a favored interpretation for the origin of the Hubble residual trend with host mass, we illustrate how dust in star-forming galaxies and mean SN Ia progenitor age both evolve along the galaxy mass sequence, thereby presenting equally viable explanations for some or all of the observed SN Ia host bias.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Type Ia Supernova Hubble Residuals and Host-Galaxy Properties

    Kim et al. (2013) [K13] introduced a new methodology for determining peak-brightness absolute magnitudes of type Ia supernovae from multi-band light curves. We examine the relation between their parameterization of light curves and Hubble residuals, based on photometry synthesized from the Nearby Supernova Factory spectrophotometric time series, with global host-galaxy properties. The K13 Hubble residual step with host mass is 0.013±0.0310.013\pm 0.031 mag for a supernova subsample with data coverage corresponding to the K13 training; at â‰Ș1σ\ll 1\sigma, the step is not significant and lower than previous measurements. Relaxing the data coverage requirement the Hubble residual step with host mass is 0.045±0.0260.045\pm 0.026 mag for the larger sample; a calculation using the modes of the distributions, less sensitive to outliers, yields a step of 0.019 mag. The analysis of this article uses K13 inferred luminosities, as distinguished from previous works that use magnitude corrections as a function of SALT2 color and stretch parameters: Steps at >2σ>2\sigma significance are found in SALT2 Hubble residuals in samples split by the values of their K13 x(1)x(1) and x(2)x(2) light-curve parameters. x(1)x(1) affects the light-curve width and color around peak (similar to the Δm15\Delta m_{15} and stretch parameters), and x(2)x(2) affects colors, the near-UV light-curve width, and the light-curve decline 20 to 30 days after peak brightness. The novel light-curve analysis, increased parameter set, and magnitude corrections of K13 may be capturing features of SN~Ia diversity arising from progenitor stellar evolution.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures.
