USE OF FILM SCRIPTS AND THEIR TRANSLATIONS IN TEACHING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

    Get PDF
Although millions of EFL learners benefit from watching subtitled/captioned movies and TV shows in non-instructional settings, one almost untouched area is the development of strategies in benefiting from film scipts and their translated versions as well as audio language-subtitle combinations. This paper reports research subseqent to the researcher/teacher’s guided work on the use of film scripts and their translated versions to notice and list chunks as well as technical and creative use of language in these scripts with their immediate contexts comparing the original scripts and those translated in Turkish and do creative dialogue/anecdote writing focusing on appropriacy and variety in language use despite some students’ self-reported lack of focus on the jargons and formal language. The research was conducted with 1-5 Likert type questionnaires and closed-ended yes/no questions. The participants, the students of the research/teacher of the present paper, are the undergraduate students taking advanced language skills course as part of the curriculum of their major, the English language and literature. The results demonstrated that the film scripts can be used to convert the input provided by the film scripts to intake and uptake, and provide good examples regarding the application of own language use in ELT

Theory of religious markets and secularism: An analysis on Muslim-majority countries

    Get PDF
Theory of religious markets is a field of study that employs the rational choice methodology to examine the effects of religious policies and regulations on religious beliefs and organizations. Theory of religious markets attributes the secularization trend in Western societies not to modernization but rather to the monopolization of religion and the eradication of competitive religious markets. In contrast to contemporary secularism theory, which excluded political analysis from sociology of religion, the theory of religious markets has reintroduced political analysis into sociology of religion and sparked a fruitful academic debate. By employing a supply-side approach instead of a demand-side approach, theory of religious markets has reintroduced secularization to the forefront of political science's principal topics. Specifically, it has reconnected it with the evolution of the impartial government and the notion of religious pluralism. This paper investigates how the debate between these two theories can contribute to the policies necessary for the institutionalization of pluralistic and liberal politics in Muslim-majority countries today. Due to its rational choice approach, the theory of religious markets makes significant contributions to the study of liberalization issues in Muslim-majority countries in the context of freedom of religion and conscience, apart from theological debates

Tez (Yüksek Lisans) -- İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, 2016Thesis (M.Sc.) -- İstanbul Technical University, Institute of Science and Technology, 2016Bu çalışmada, farklı yapılara sahip farklı silan türleri doğrudan stiren-akrilik kopolimerlere eklenmiştir. Bu kopolimerler yüksek PVC boya formülasyonunda formüle edilmiştir. Bu boyalar, ovalama direnci, sertlik ve esneklik özelliklerine göre test edilmektedir. In this study, different types of silanes, which have different structures, are added directly to the styrene-acrylic copolymers. These copolymers are formulated in high PVC paint formulation. These paints are tested in according to their scrub resistance, hardness and flexibility properties.Yüksek LisansM.Sc

Thrust control design for unmanned marine vehicles

Thesis (Master)--Izmir Institute of Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Izmir, 2012Includes bibliographical references (leaves: 65-70)Text in English; Abstract: Turkish and Englishxv, 74 leavesIn conventional electrically driven propulsion systems with fixed pitch propellers, thruster controllers are usually aimed at controlling propeller shaft speed only. Especially in unmanned marine vehicles which operate in dynamic flow conditions, these type thruster controllers provide unsatisfactory thrust responses. The reason for this is that the thrust force is simultaneously affected by dynamic effects like, variable ambient flow velocity and angle, thruster-thruster interaction and ventilation. It is aimed to achieve acceptable thrust tracking accuracy in all kind of dynamic flow conditions in this thesis work. A novel feed-back based thruster controller which includes the effect of incoming axial flow velocity, is designed for this purpose. In controller design, first, thruster propeller's open water characteristics in four-quadrant flow states are measured. Data collected from open water tests are then non-dimensionalized and embedded in the controller's thrust model code. Relation between ideal shaft speed and desired thrust is derived by using the four-quadrant propeller model. The proposed method is evaluated in the experimental test-setup designed for this study to simulate open water conditions. Results indicate that thrust tracking performance of novel controller is acceptable in all four-quadrant flow tests

Political Institutionalization and Economic Rents: The Case of Turkey from 1923 to 1960

    Get PDF
The theory of D. North, J. Wallis and B. Weingast (NWW), namely rational choice institutionalism, is applied here to Turkish history from 1923 to 1960. Economic rents are considered as the fundamental mechanisms to stop violence among the powerful groups in order to form a political unity in the emerging states/developing countries. It is asserted here that the Republic of Turkey created economic rents through economic interventionism and centrally planned economy during the mono-party regime years. Therefore, there are strict relations between the political institutionalization of Turkey as a mono-party regime and the interventionist economic policies of the Turkey from 1923 to 1950. The high scale of economic rents during the democratic era from 1950 to 1960 also undermined the political freedom in Tukey and destabilized the democratic political system

Qualitative study on EFL teachers’ self-perceived beliefs about teacher autonomy

    Get PDF
Teacher autonomy has been debated for a long time as a term and for its possible functions. It is a multi-faceted term which has lots of definitions in the literature. And more studies have been conducted to investigate it but there is still a need for in-depth analysis of the term and its dimensions. The purpose of this study is to explore EFL teachers’ self-perceived beliefs about teacher autonomy. The present study seeks out the answers to what EFL teachers know about teacher autonomy, how they define it, whether they have had any practices in their teaching career so far or not regarding teacher autonomy and what assumptions are underlying behind their self-reported practices. The participants of this study were EFL teachers (12 female and 2 male) who work in different contexts. The data was collected through written interviews/self-reports and primary data was further discussed in a focus group interview. The findings of the study reveal that all the participant teachers have an idea about teacher autonomy. While most of the teachers have a broader perspective about the issue, a few of them have some views about the term even if they don’t perceive themselves as a fully autonomous teacher. It also shows that most of the participant teachers are aware of the importance of teacher autonomy. Key Words: Teacher perceptions, teacher beliefs, teacher autonomy, ELT, EF
