Impact of the U.S. Export Enhancement Program on the World Wheat Market,The
The U.S. Export Enhancement Program (EEP) was built into the 1985 U.S. Food Security Act with a major objective being to increase sales of U.S. agricultural commodities. Through the EEP, the U.S. government subsidizes exports of agricultural commodities to targeted countries. The EEP was applied to the majority of U.S. wheat sales n 1987/88 and 1988/89. Coincident with the 1985 act and EEP legislation, U.S. wheat exports have increased significantly.
This study uses a nonspatial, partial equilibrium model of world wheat trade to analyze the impact of the EEP on U.S. wheat exports and share of world wheat trade. The study indicates that the effect of the EEP on the wheat market over the period 1986/87 to 1988/89 has been a large displacement of commercial wheat sales (87-92%), with export additionally due to the EEP being only 8-13%. The impact of the EEP on other exporters\u27 wheat trade and importer demand has been small relative to the magnitude of total EEP sales
The utility of diagnostic tests in irritable bowel syndrome patients: a systematic review
The aim of this study was to determine the pretest probability of organic GI disease and the accuracy of diagnostic tests for organic GI disease in patients who meet symptom-based criteria for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). METHODS : After a comprehensive literature search for studies examining the accuracy of diagnostic tests for organic GI disease among patients who meet symptom-based criteria for IBS, two independent observers qualitatively assessed the methodology of selected studies and extracted data. Data on the pretest probability of organic GI disease in this population and the accuracy of currently recommended diagnostic tests were converted to descriptive tables. RESULTS : Among patients meeting symptom-based criteria for IBS, the pretest probability of inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, or infectious diarrhea is less than 1%. Currently recommended diagnostic tests rarely identify organic GI disease in patients fulfilling symptom-based criteria for IBS. However, the pretest probability of celiac disease in patients meeting symptom-based criteria for IBS was 10 times higher than the prevalence of celiac disease in the general population. CONCLUSION : There is insufficient evidence to recommend the routine performance of a standardized battery of diagnostic tests in patients who meet symptom-based criteria for IBS. Based upon the increased pretest probability of celiac disease, routine performance of serological tests for celiac disease may be useful in this patient population, though additional study is needed in this area.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/72511/1/j.1572-0241.2002.07027.x.pd
Winning and losing: differences in reward and punishment sensitivity between smokers and nonsmokers
Background: Smokers show increased brain activation in reward processing regions in response to smoking-related cues, yet few studies have examined secondary rewards not associated with smoking (i.e., money). Inconsistencies exist in the studies that do examine secondary rewards with some studies showing increased brain activation in reward processing brain regions, while others show decreased activation or no difference in activation between smokers and nonsmokers. Aims: The goal of the current study is to see if smokers process the evaluation and delivery of equally salient real world rewards similarly or differently than nonsmokers. Methods: The current study employed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine brain responses in smokers and nonsmokers during the evaluation and delivery of monetary gains and losses. Results: In comparison to nonsmokers, smokers showed increased activation in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex to the evaluation of anticipated monetary losses and the brain response. Moreover, smokers compared to nonsmokers showed decreased activation in the inferior frontal gyrus to the delivery of expected monetary gains. Brain activations to both the evaluation of anticipated monetary losses and the delivery of expected monetary gains correlated with increased self-reported smoking craving to relieve negative withdrawal symptoms and craving related to positive aspects of smoking, respectively. Discussion: Together these results indicate that smokers are hyperresponsive to the evaluation of anticipated punishment and hyporesponsive to the delivery of expected rewards. Although further research is needed, this hypersensitivity to punishments coupled with increased craving may negatively impact quit attempts as smokers anticipate the negative withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting
Synthesis of novel boronic acid-decorated poly(2-oxazoline)s showing triple-stimuli responsive behavior
Boronic acid-functionalized (co)polymers have gained increasing attention in the field of responsive polymers and polymeric materials due to their unique characteristics and responsiveness towards both changes in pH and sugar concentrations. This makes these (co)polymers excellently suited for various applications including responsive membranes, drug delivery applications and sensor materials. Unfortunately, boronic acid-based polymer research is also notorious for its challenging monomer synthesis and polymerization and its overall difficult polymer purification and manipulation. In light of this, many research groups have focused their attention on the optimization of various polymerization techniques in order to expand the field of BA-research including previously unexplored monomers and polymerization techniques. In this paper, a new post-polymerization modification methodology was developed allowing for the synthesis of novel boronic acid-decorated poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline) (PAOx) copolymers, utilizing the recently published PAOx methyl ester reaction platform. The developed synthetic pathway provides a straightforward method for the introduction of pH- and glucose-responsiveness, adding this to the already wide variety of possible responsive PAOx-based systems. The synthesized BA-decorated PAOx are based on the thermoresponsive poly(2-n-propyl-2-oxazoline) (PnPropOx). This introduces a pH and glucose dependence on both cloud and clearance point temperatures of the copolymer in aqueous and pH-buffered conditions, yielding a triply-responsive (co)polymer that highlights the wide variety of obtainable properties using this pathway
Precision delivery of RAS-inhibiting siRNA to KRAS driven cancer via peptide-based nanoparticles
Over 95% of pancreatic adenocarcinomas (PDACs), as well as a large fraction of other tumor types, such as colorectal adenocarcinoma, are driven by KRAS activation. However, no direct RAS inhibitors exist for cancer therapy. Furthermore, the delivery of therapeutic agents of any kind to PDAC in particular has been hindered by the extensive desmoplasia and resultant drug delivery challenges that accompanies these tumors. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) is a promising modality for anti-neoplastic therapy due to its precision and wide range of potential therapeutic targets. Unfortunately, siRNA therapy is limited by low serum half-life, vulnerability to intracellular digestion, and transient therapeutic effect. Excision of a Rare Triquetral Body Fracture Nonunion
Aside from the more common dorsal avulsion fractures, isolated triquetral body fractures are a rare injury and often missed. When they are identified, conservative treatment via immobilization is often the standard of care for initial treatment. Rarely, triquetral body fractures can develop into symptomatic nonunions, causing considerable pain and disability. Multiple classification schemes have been described to categorize triquetrum fractures; however, distal triquetrum fractures fit into none of the established models. There is scarce literature describing treatment of triquetral body fracture nonunions. The few reports that exist often use a variation of open reduction internal fixation with or without grafting as treatment. We present the case of an unusual triquetral body fracture nonunion that was successfully treated via surgical excision of the ununited distal fragment
Gap Detection for Genome-Scale Constraint-Based Models
Constraint-based metabolic models are currently the most comprehensive system-wide models of cellular metabolism. Several challenges arise when building an in silico constraint-based model of an organism that need to be addressed before flux balance analysis (FBA) can be applied for simulations. An algorithm called FBA-Gap is presented here that aids the construction of a working model based on plausible modifications to a given list of reactions that are known to occur in the organism. When applied to a working model, the algorithm gives a hypothesis concerning a minimal medium for sustaining the cell in culture. The utility of the algorithm is demonstrated in creating a new model organism and is applied to four existing working models for generating hypotheses about culture media. In modifying a partial metabolic reconstruction so that biomass may be produced using FBA, the proposed method is more efficient than a previously proposed method in that fewer new reactions are added to complete the model. The proposed method is also more accurate than other approaches in that only biologically plausible reactions and exchange reactions are used

bowel from primary tumors outside the abdominal cavity are uncommon, and most remain asymptomatic and are not discovered
until autopsy. However, small bowel metastases can lead to intestinal obstruction, intussuseption or even perforation.
While metastases to the small bowel have been described for other tumor types, including melanoma and lung cancer, this
is extremely uncommon for sarcoma, especially alveolar soft part sarcoma. We describe a 42-year-old male with a long history
of alveolar soft part sarcoma, metastatic to the lung and brain, who developed an intussuseption from metastases to the small
bowel
