2005 Fall.Includes bibliographical references (pages 49-53).This study bridges the gap between psychotherapy and music therapy. Based on the experiential essence of musical interventions, it is hypothesized that the inclusion of music therapy in the context of adolescent group psychotherapy may enhance the therapeutic process. At-risk adolescent girls age 14-18 participated in the study. Both quantitative and qualitative data was collected. Pre-and post-tests were administered to each participant using the Therapeutic Factors Inventory (TFI; Lese & MacNair-Semands, 2000), and descriptive information was collected through informal interviews following the 6-week intervention. While the TFI showed little promise in identifying the therapeutic factors contributing the outcomes due to a small sample size (n=3), qualitative data supports the use of music as an influential and significant contribution to group psychotherapy with at-risk adolescents

Oh, years ago, in sweet Mayo, I married sweet Cordelia; A happy wife, and a happy life, our marriage was no failure. When we were wed, these words I said: Oh, take my houses, oh! But bear in mind, ye’ll all ways find, I’ll wear the trousers, oh! We sail’d away to America, My troubles did begin, sir; Relations fine, all in a line, To my house they were let in sir. She welcomed them like gentlemen, I could not tell them to go; From that day out you’d hear her shout: She’d wear the trousers, oh! Her cousin Mat and her Uncle Pat, They wore out my new braces, Her Aunty Nan and her Nephew Dan, They kept me in their traces; Her Granny dear, so full of beer,At night carouses, oh! When I complain my wife exclaim: She’d wear the trousers, oh! My spir it up not a bite or sup, I’ll never eat or drink, sir, My wife and me must master be, To night I’ll know my fate, sir. I’ll take a fall out of them all, My blood arouses, oh! Home rule for me, my wife shall see, I’ll wear the trousers, oh! I’ll wear the trousers, trousers, oh! I’ll wear the trousers, oh! So ev’ry man do all ye can to wear the trousers, oh

    Get PDF

Jubilee mugs:the monarchy and the Sex Pistols

With rare exceptions sociologists have traditionally had little to say about the British monarchy. In the exceptional cases of the Durkheimian functionalism of Shills and Young (1953), the left humanism of Birnbaum (1955), or the archaic state/backward nation thesis of Nairn (1988), the British nation has been conceived as a homogenous mass. The brief episode of the Sex Pistols' Jubilee year song 'God Save the Queen' exposed some of the divisions within the national 'mass', forcing a re-ordering of the balance between detachment and belonging to the Royal idea. I argue that the song acted as a kind of 'breaching experiment'. Its wilful provocation of Royalist sentiment revealed the level of sanction available to the media-industrial complex to enforce compliance to British self-images of loyal and devoted national communicants

The thermal storage for long periods as the drying of high moisture foods is essential to dehydration; that it lasts between 10 to 20 hours depending on the food, with a continuous supply of heat. In this research was raised and design a system of accumulation of heat energy in eutectic hydrated salts for the heat supply to a solar dehydrator food in stages of low radiation. It conducted a literature review of different models of thermal energy storage; statistically analyzed the feasibility and effectiveness of the materials required to achieve a dehydration continuously; with these parameters defined was the theoretical calculation of the system which was later simulated in software of finite elements (SolidWorks). The results show that system delivers 10 hours of back-up power for 5 hours of charging, in addition the encapsulation of salt achieves a better transfer and accumulation of energy in a concentric system buffer, meeting the desired specifications

Rationale and recommendations on decolonising the pedagogy and curriculum of the Law School at the University of Exeter

This report outlines the rationale behind and recommendations on the steps that need to be taken towards decolonising the Law School's pedagogy and curriculum. The reason is that we see decolonisation as not something that can be achieved but as an ongoing process. It concludes a two-year process of research and discussions involving a joint effort between staff and students. A rationale for a change in approach to both pedagogy and curriculum is presented together with recommendations and practical examples of how this might be achieved in modular teaching in the Law School

The patriotism of gentlemen with red hair: European Jews and the liberal state, 1789–1939

European Jewish history from 1789–1939 supports the view that construction of national identities even in secular liberal states was determined not only by modern considerations alone but also by ancient patterns of thought, behaviour and prejudice. Emancipation stimulated unprecedented patriotism, especially in wartime, as Jews strove to prove loyalty to their countries of citizenship. During World War I, even Zionists split along national lines, as did families and friends. Jewish patriotism was interchangeable with nationalism inasmuch as Jews identified themselves with national cultures. Although emancipation implied acceptance and an end to anti-Jewish prejudice in the modern liberal state, the kaleidoscopic variety of Jewish patriotism throughout Europe inadvertently undermined the idea of national identity and often provoked anti-Semitism. Even as loyal citizens of separate states, the Jews, however scattered, disunited and diverse, were made to feel, often unwillingly, that they were one people in exile
