On the Complexity of ATL and ATL* Module Checking
Module checking has been introduced in late 1990s to verify open systems,
i.e., systems whose behavior depends on the continuous interaction with the
environment. Classically, module checking has been investigated with respect to
specifications given as CTL and CTL* formulas. Recently, it has been shown that
CTL (resp., CTL*) module checking offers a distinctly different perspective
from the better-known problem of ATL (resp., ATL*) model checking. In
particular, ATL (resp., ATL*) module checking strictly enhances the
expressiveness of both CTL (resp., CTL*) module checking and ATL (resp. ATL*)
model checking. In this paper, we provide asymptotically optimal bounds on the
computational cost of module checking against ATL and ATL*, whose upper bounds
are based on an automata-theoretic approach. We show that module-checking for
ATL is EXPTIME-complete, which is the same complexity of module checking
against CTL. On the other hand, ATL* module checking turns out to be
3EXPTIME-complete, hence exponentially harder than CTL* module checking.Comment: In Proceedings GandALF 2017, arXiv:1709.0176
Visibly Rational Expressions
Regular Expressions (RE) are an algebraic formalism for expressing regular languages, widely used in string search and as a specification language in verification. In this paper we introduce and investigate Visibly Rational Expressions (VRE), an extension of RE for the well-known class of Visibly Pushdown Languages (VPL). We show that VRE capture the class of VPL. Moreover, we identify an equally expressive fragment of VRE which admits a quadratic time compositional translation into the automata acceptors of VPL. We also prove that, for this fragment, universality, inclusion and language equivalence are EXPTIME-complete. Finally, we provide an extension of VRE for VPL over infinite words
Event-Clock Nested Automata
In this paper we introduce and study Event-Clock Nested Automata (ECNA), a
formalism that combines Event Clock Automata (ECA) and Visibly Pushdown
Automata (VPA). ECNA allow to express real-time properties over non-regular
patterns of recursive programs. We prove that ECNA retain the same closure and
decidability properties of ECA and VPA being closed under Boolean operations
and having a decidable language-inclusion problem. In particular, we prove that
emptiness, universality, and language-inclusion for ECNA are EXPTIME-complete
problems. As for the expressiveness, we have that ECNA properly extend any
previous attempt in the literature of combining ECA and VPA
The Complexity of Synthesizing Uniform Strategies
We investigate uniformity properties of strategies. These properties involve
sets of plays in order to express useful constraints on strategies that are not
\mu-calculus definable. Typically, we can state that a strategy is
observation-based. We propose a formal language to specify uniformity
properties, interpreted over two-player turn-based arenas equipped with a
binary relation between plays. This way, we capture e.g. games with winning
conditions expressible in epistemic temporal logic, whose underlying
equivalence relation between plays reflects the observational capabilities of
agents (for example, synchronous perfect recall). Our framework naturally
generalizes many other situations from the literature. We establish that the
problem of synthesizing strategies under uniformity constraints based on

Complexity of Timeline-Based Planning over Dense Temporal Domains: Exploring the Middle Ground
In this paper, we address complexity issues for timeline-based planning over
dense temporal domains. The planning problem is modeled by means of a set of
independent, but interacting, components, each one represented by a number of
state variables, whose behavior over time (timelines) is governed by a set of
temporal constraints (synchronization rules). While the temporal domain is
usually assumed to be discrete, here we consider the dense case. Dense
timeline-based planning has been recently shown to be undecidable in the
general case; decidability (NP-completeness) can be recovered by restricting to
purely existential synchronization rules (trigger-less rules). In this paper,
we investigate the unexplored area of intermediate cases in between these two
extremes. We first show that decidability and non-primitive recursive-hardness
can be proved by admitting synchronization rules with a trigger, but forcing
them to suitably check constraints only in the future with respect to the
trigger (future simple rules). More "tractable" results can be obtained by
additionally constraining the form of intervals in future simple rules:
