    A mathematical model for the sequestering of chemical contaminants by magnetic particles

    A mathematical model is developed and implemented to characterize the pickup of various liquid chemical contaminants by polyethylene-coated magnetic particles. The model and its associated experimental and analytical protocols were applied to a wide range of liquid chemicals in order to gain insights into the physical basis for the pickup phenomenon. The characteristics of the pickup isotherms range between “ideal” and “nonideal” behaviors that are reflected in the mathematical model by a single parameter, �0, where �0=1 corresponds to ideal behavior and �0�1 corresponds to a departure from idealized behavior that is directly quantified by the magnitude of �0. The parameter �0 is also related to the efficiency of pickup, and since most isotherms observed in the study deviate from ideality, the high efficiency of pickup observed in these systems has been attributed in part to this deviation. The proposed model and its associated experimental and analytical protocols demonstrate great potential for the systematic evaluation of the uptake of chemical contaminants using magnetic particle technology

    ABSTRACT Spherical bearings have been used successfully in engines for some years. The spherical bearing geometry allows a simplified axisymmetric piston design; gradual rotation of the piston and rings results in axisymmetric sidewall wear, temperature distribution and thermal expansion. A previouslydescribed concept engine design incorporating a spherical joint piston was based on an existing production engine with a conventional cylindrical piston pin. Previously-developed finite element lubrication analysis methods are applied to both designs and predictive comparisons made. INTRODUCTION Spherical bearings have been used successfully in engines for some years. The large (400 mm bore) Sulzer Z40 series medium speed 4-stroke Diesel engine has a spherical piston bearing which has been well-documented by its maker The spherical bearing design allows a simplified axisymmetric piston design; gradual rotation of the piston and rings results in axisymmetric sidewall wear, temperature distribution and thermal expansion. Development of a low heat rejection Diesel engine sponsored by the Department of Energy (DOE) and monitored by NASA-Lewis began at Cummins Engine Company in 1989 and ended around 1995 [3-8]. The LE-55 (Low Emission, 55% thermal efficiency) concept engine design incorporating a spherical joint piston was based on an existing Cummins L10 production engine with a conventional cylindrical piston pin. The Cummins L10 was a 10 liter 6 cylinder in-line Diesel engine produced for 15 years ending around 1998. The SCE (Single-Cylinder Engine) L10 version used for test purposes formed the basis for successful life tests of LE-55 hardware

    HOPS 383: An Outbursting Class 0 Protostar in Orion

    We report the dramatic mid-infrared brightening between 2004 and 2006 of HOPS 383, a deeply embedded protostar adjacent to NGC 1977 in Orion. By 2008, the source became a factor of 35 brighter at 24 microns with a brightness increase also apparent at 4.5 microns. The outburst is also detected in the submillimeter by comparing APEX/SABOCA to SCUBA data, and a scattered-light nebula appeared in NEWFIRM K_s imaging. The post-outburst spectral energy distribution indicates a Class 0 source with a dense envelope and a luminosity between 6 and 14 L_sun. Post-outburst time-series mid- and far-infrared photometry shows no long-term fading and variability at the 18% level between 2009 and 2012. HOPS 383 is the first outbursting Class 0 object discovered, pointing to the importance of episodic accretion at early stages in the star formation process. Its dramatic rise and lack of fading over a six-year period hint that it may be similar to FU Ori outbursts, although the luminosity appears to be significantly smaller than the canonical luminosities of such objects.Comment: Accepted by ApJ Letters, 6 pages, 4 figures; v2 has an updated email address for the lead autho

    We formulate a precise conjecture that, if true, extends the converse theorem of Hecke without requiring hypotheses on twists by Dirichlet characters or an Euler product. The main idea is to linearize the Euler product, replacing it by twists by Ramanujan sums. We provide evidence for the conjecture, including proofs of some special cases and under various additional hypotheses

    IPEM code of practice for high-energy photon therapy dosimetry based on the NPL absorbed dose calibration service

    The 1990 code of practice (COP), produced by the IPSM (now the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine, IPEM) and the UK National Physical Laboratory (NPL), gave instructions for determining absorbed dose to water for megavoltage photon (MV) radiotherapy beams (Lillicrap et al 1990). The simplicity and clarity of the 1990 COP led to widespread uptake and high levels of consistency in external dosimetry audits. An addendum was published in 2014 to include the non-conventional conditions in Tomotherapy units. However, the 1990 COP lacked detailed recommendations for calibration conditions, and the corresponding nomenclature, to account for modern treatment units with different reference fields, including small fields as described in IAEA TRS483 (International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 2017, Vienna). This updated COP recommends the irradiation geometries, the choice of ionisation chambers, appropriate correction factors and the derivation of absorbed dose to water calibration coefficients, for carrying out reference dosimetry measurements on MV external beam radiotherapy machines. It also includes worked examples of application to different conditions. The strengths of the 1990 COP are retained: recommending the NPL2611 chamber type as secondary standard; the use of tissue phantom ratio (TPR) as the beam quality specifier; and NPL-provided direct calibration coefficients for the user's chamber in a range of beam qualities similar to those in clinical use. In addition, the formalism is now extended to units that cannot achieve the standard reference field size of 10 cm × 10 cm, and recommendations are given for measuring dose in non-reference conditions. This COP is designed around the service that NPL provides and thus it does not require the range of different options presented in TRS483, such as generic correction factors for beam quality. This approach results in a significantly simpler, more concise and easier to follow protocol

    An APEX survey of outflow and infall toward the youngest protostars in Orion

    Aims: We aim to characterize the outflow properties of a sample of early Class 0 phase low-mass protostars in Orion, which were first identified by the Herschel Space Observatory. We also look for signatures of infall in key molecular lines. Methods: Maps of CO J = 3-2 and J = 4-3 toward 16 very young Class 0 protostars were obtained using the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) telescope. We searched the data for line wings indicative of outflows and calculated masses, velocities, and dynamical times for the outflows. We used additional HCO+, H13CO+, and NH3 lines to look for infall signatures toward the protostars. Results: We estimate the outflow masses, forces, and mass-loss rates based on the CO J = 3-2 and J = 4-3 line intensities for eight sources with detected outflows. We derive upper limits for the outflow masses and forces of sources without clear outflow detections. The total outflow masses for the sources with clear outflow detections are in the range between 0.03 and 0.16 M☉ for CO J = 3-2 and between 0.02 and 0.10 M☉ for CO J = 4-3. The outflow forces are in the range between 1.57 × 10-4 and 1.16 × 10-3 M☉ km s-1 yr-1 for CO J = 3-2 and between 1.14 × 10-4 and 6.92 × 10-4 M☉ km s-1 yr-1 for CO J = 4-3. Nine protostars in our sample show asymmetric line profiles indicative of infall in HCO+, compared to H13CO+ or NH3. Conclusions: The outflow forces of the protostars in our sample show no correlation with the bolometric luminosity, unlike those found by some earlier studies for other Class 0 protostars. The derived outflow forces for the sources with detected outflows are similar to those found for other, more evolved, Class 0 protostars, suggesting that outflows develop quickly in the Class 0 phase

    Prevalence and molecular characterization of Clostridium difficile isolated from feedlot beef cattle upon arrival and mid-feeding period

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The presence of indistinguishable strains of <it>Clostridium difficile </it>in humans, food animals and food, as well as the apparent emergence of the food-animal-associated ribotype 078/toxinotype V as a cause of community-associated <it>C. difficile </it>infection have created concerns about the potential for foodborne infection. While studies have reported <it>C. difficile </it>in calves, studies of cattle closer to the age of harvest are required. Four commercial feedlots in Alberta (Canada) were enrolled for this study. Fecal samples were collected at the time of arrival and after acclimation (< 62, 62-71 or > 71 days on feed). Selective culture for <it>Clostridium difficile </it>was performed, and isolates were characterized by ribotyping and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. A logistic regression model was built to investigate the effect of exposure to antimicrobial drugs on the presence of <it>C. difficile</it>.</p> <p>Results</p> <p><it>Clostridium difficile </it>was isolated from 18 of 539 animals at the time of feedlot arrival (CI = 2.3-6.1) and from 18 of 335 cattle at mid-feeding period (CI = 2.9-13.1). Overall, there was no significant difference in the prevalence of <it>C. difficile </it>shedding on arrival versus mid-feeding period (<it>P </it>= 0.47). No association between shedding of the bacterium and antimicrobial administration was found (<it>P </it>= 0.33). All the isolates recovered were ribotype 078, a toxinotype V strain with genes encoding toxins A, B and CDT. In addition, all strains were classified as NAP7 by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and had the characteristic 39 base pairs deletion and upstream truncating mutation on the <it>tcd</it>C gene.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>It is apparent that <it>C. difficile </it>is carried in the intestinal tracts of a small percentage of feedlot cattle arriving and later in the feeding period and that ribotype 078/NAP7 is the dominant strain in these animals. Herd management practices associated with <it>C. difficile </it>shedding were not identified, however further studies of the potential role of antimicrobials on <it>C. difficile </it>acquisition and shedding are required.</p

    Criminal narrative experience: relating emotions to offence narrative roles during crime commission

    A neglected area of research within criminality has been that of the experience of the offence for the offender. The present study investigates the emotions and narrative roles that are experienced by an offender while committing a broad range of crimes and proposes a model of Criminal Narrative Experience (CNE). Hypotheses were derived from the Circumplex of Emotions (Russell, 1997), Frye (1957), Narrative Theory (McAdams, 1988) and its link with Investigative Psychology (Canter, 1994). The analysis was based on 120 cases. Convicted for a variety of crimes, incarcerated criminals were interviewed and the data were subjected to Smallest Space Analysis (SSA). Four themes of Criminal Narrative Experience (CNE) were identified: Elated Hero, Calm Professional, Distressed Revenger and Depressed Victim in line with the recent theoretical framework posited for Narrative Offence Roles (Youngs & Canter, 2012). The theoretical implications for understanding crime on the basis of the Criminal Narrative Experience (CNE) as well as practical implications are discussed
