participaram do projeto.
masculino e 529 (54,8%) do feminino.
Resultados: O presente estudo revelou uma elevada prevalência de lombalgia (anual: 47,2%;
apresentaram um elevado alto grau de correlação entre o IMC e as pregas cutâneas (p<0,001;
r=0,712), entre o IMC e circunferência abdominal (p<0,001; r=0,884) e entre a circunferência
abdominal e as pregas cutâneas (p<0,001; r=0,701).
a mochila escolar apresentaram a maior prevalência.
Introduction: Musculoskeletal disorders consist of several conditions, being low back pain (LBP) and
scoliosis two of the most important. The prevalence of LBP has been increasing in adolescents,
representing a growing public health concern in particular because of the indirect costs. The
relevance of scoliosis is related with the absence of national studies. Several factors may be involved
in the pathogenesis of LBP and scoliosis, such as physical, genetic, mechanical, behavioral and
environmental factors. The school environment, including the postures adopted by students and the
transportation of backpacks, and some lifestyle habits are factors that can also contribute to the
development of these musculoskeletal disorders. This study also analyzes the weight status,
particularly overweight and obesity, as an often-referred potential risk factor of musculoskeletal
disorders (although this issue is controversial in the literature), and because the weight status is
currently considered as one of the most serious threats for public health worldwide.
Objectives of the study: (1) to determine the point, annual and lifetime prevalence of LBP, as well as
the prevalence of scoliosis in adolescents in the Algarve region; (2) to identify factors associated with
its development; (3) to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity, and to explore their
possible association with the prevalence of LBP and scoliosis in adolescents; (4) to compare the
results from different anthropometric methods (body mass index - BMI, measurement of skinfold
thickness and waist circumference), and verify their concordance.
Methodology: The design of this study was observational, analytical, and cross-sectional. The study
was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Regional Health Administration of the Algarve, the
Regional Direction of Education of the Algarve, the Directorate-General for Innovation and
Curriculum Development, Ministry of Education and Science, and the principals of schools who
participated in the project. The sample included 966 adolescents in the Algarve region (southern
Portugal), aged between 10 and 16 years (12.24±1.53 years), being 437 (45.2%) males and 529
(54.8%) female. A stratified random sample was used, based on counties, assuming the possibility of
geographical heterogeneities. The measurement instruments were applied at a single point in time
(2011/2012), and included the Questionnaire of Low Back Pain and Postural Habits to characterize
the presence of LBP and postural habits adopted by students at home and at school, the scoliometer
to assess the presence of scoliosis, the balance and the stadiometer (being subsequently calculated
BMI), the caliper and the metric tape. Data analyses included descriptive statistical techniques (graphical and analytical) applied to all variables in the study. Chi-square Independency tests were
applied in order to evaluate associations between the variables of this study. The Spearman
correlation coefficient was used to analyze the correlations between measurements obtained with
the different anthropometric methods (in its quantitative form). The influence of the different
variables was assessed using binary logistic regressions, and the results were presented as crude and
adjusted odds ratios with their respective confidence intervals.
Results: This study revealed a high prevalence of LBP (annual: 47.2%; punctual: 15.7%; lifetime:
62.1%). The girls had a higher probability of having LBP compared to boys (OR= 2.05; 95% CI: 1.58-
2.65; p<0.001), as well as older students (13-16 years) compared to younger ones (10-12 years)
(OR=1.54; 95% CI: 1.19-1.99; p=0.001). Students who adopted the posture of sitting with the spine
positioned incorrectly presented a 2.49 higher probability of LBP (95% CI: 1.91-3.24; p<0.001);
students positioned improperly for watching TV or playing games presented a 2.01 higher probability
(95% CI: 1.55-2.61; p<0.001); and those who adopted the standing posture incorrectly had a 3.39
higher chance to presenting LBP (95% CI: 2.19-5.23; p<0.001). Scoliosis was observed in 41 (4.2%)
students. Girls showed a higher prevalence (4.5% versus 3.9%), such as those with delayed menarche
(8.6% versus 3.3%) and the thiner (7.1%), being though none of these associations statistically
significant. Regarding the prevalence of overweight and obesity, the values were of 31.6%, 61.4%
and 41.1% according to BMI measurement, skinfold thickness and waist circumference, respectively.
The values obtained from the evaluation of the three anthropometric methods showed a high degree
of correlation between BMI and skinfold thickness (p<0.001; r=0.712), between BMI and waist
circumference (p<0.001; r=0.884), and between waist circumference and skinfold thickness
(p<0.001; r=0.701).
Conclusions: This study revealed prevalence rates of LBP similar to previous studies with higher
values among older students, female students, or those who adopted incorrect ways of sitting or
standing. As regards scoliosis, a low prevalence was observed, without any significant association
with the factors under scrutiny. As for the weight status, a high prevalence of overweight and obesity
was found using the three anthropometric methods: BMI, measurement of skinfolds, and waist
circumference. A high degree of correlation was observed between these three anthropometric
methods. This study contributed to determine the magnitude of these musculoskeletal disorders in
this specific population, as well as its associated factors. According the results, intervention actions
are necessary at schools involving not only students but the entire school community in order to
prevent musculoskeletal disorders through promoting healthy lifestyle habits
School bullying – Actors, actions and associated feelings: a study with students from 2nd and 3rd cycles of the Algarve region
Diversos estudos verificaram a prevalência
Several studies have examined the prevalence of bullying among students from various countries showing that this is an international problem, involving at least one in ten students. Objectives – Characterize the bullying actions in the
school environment, the student role, the feelings associated with these actions and identify the characteristics of the offender. Methods – The sample was composed by 519 students, enrolled in two schools in southern Portugal. Each student was invited to fill out an anonymous questionnaire, describing one situation of bullying, that they have experienced, their role and feelings about this situation. Results – The results revealed a prevalence of 61.7% cases of physical aggression and 29.7% of verbal allocation. 12.7% of students were aggressors, 21.8% were victims and 63.6% were witnesses. 10.6% reported feeling well, 11% showed indifference and 78.4% of students felt badly. It was found that for each year more the student increases 1.5 times the probability to be the aggressor and the boys have 5.2 times more likely to come into the role of aggressor in a situation of bullying. Conclusion – The present study found that all students were involved in one school bullying situation, most of the times as a witness, with physical aggression and felt bad about it. The boys and older students over age were more likely to play the role of aggressor in a bullying situation
comparison of two types of interventions in improving ergonomic knowledge about postures and reducing low back pain in adolescents
This study aimed to compare the impact of two Back School Postural Education Programs on improving ergonomic knowledge of postures adopted at school and home, as well as on reducing low back pain (LPB) in adolescents. The sample was constituted by 153 students, aged 10–16 years, with 96 (62.7%) girls, divided into 2 intervention groups (GA, GB). Two tests (theoretical and practical) and LBP questionnaire were applied 1 week before and 1 year after the end of the program. In GA, three sessions were performed for each class separately, on theoretical and practical issues, lasting 45 min and at intervals of 1 week, and in GB, only one theoretical session (90 min) was given to all students. Statistically differences on GA were obtained between the values 1 week before and after 1 year of evaluation in both theoretical and practical tests (p ≤ 0.001). In GB, only the values of the practical test present a statistical difference (p ≤ 0.001). GA obtained higher values on both tests after 1 year of follow-up compared with GB (p ≤ 0.001). The number of students with LBP decreased on GA (p ≤ 0.001). The program with longer duration, higher weekly frequency, and more practical and individualized character promotes better effects.publishersversionpublishe

Association between temporomandibular dysfunction symptoms with psychological factors and modifications in the cervical column among students of the Jean Piaget-Algarve Health School
estruturas associadas.
curvatura cervical e 19,6% hiperlordose cervical.
The temporomandibular disorder (TMD) affects the tempomandibular joints
and stomatognathic apparatus mastication muscles and associated structures. The
mastication muscles spasm is the main cause of painful symptoms in TMD; this situation
may be induced by deleterious habits, which can be triggered or aggravated by emotional
stress. In addition to psychological factors, cervical spine postural alterations may lead
to jaw repositioning and structural changes in the whole temporomandibular joint (TMJ),
causing TMD. National studies on the TMD prevalence and its relation with postural
changes and levels of anxiety and depression are unknown.
Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of TMD and its
association with psychological factors, particularly anxiety and depression, and also postural
changes in the cervical spine, in students from the Jean Piaget-Algarve Health School.
Material and methods: The sample comprised 306 students of Physiotherapy, Nursing,
Pharmacy and Clinical Analysis and Public Health BScs, from both genders, aged 18 to
43 years. TMD (using Fonseca Anamnesic Questionnaire), Anxiety and Depression and
cervical spine posture were evaluated once during the 2009/2010 academic year.
Results and discussion: The results indicated a TMD prevalence of 37.3% and 18.3% of anxiety
or depression. The postural evaluation showed that 36.6% of students had correct cervical
curvature and 19.6% had cervical concavity. No statistically significant relation (p>0.05) was
found between the presence of TMD and cervical spine changes. However, the association
between TMD and anxiety and depression, showed that from the 114 students (37.3%)
who had TMD symptoms, 35 (11.4%) also showed anxiety or depression signs (statistically
significant; p<0.05).
Conclusion: This study showed that the Jean Piaget-Algarve Health School students’,
from various health courses, present a high TMD prevalence, and revealed a significant
association between this dysfunction and anxiety or depression levels. It is of great
importance to disclosure this subject to populations’ submitted to great emotional stress,
such as university students, in order to improve individual self awareness to TMD signs
and symptoms.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
ABSTRACT - The actual pandemic context took several changes in the routine of higher education students, including interruptions of face-to-face classes, implementation of education at a distance, interruption or delayed phases, and others, which could compromise mental health. This study aimed to assess the perception of mental health among higher education students in times of the pandemic COVID-19 and associated factors. The sample was constituted of 1,004 higher education students, aged 18 to 51 years (20.33±3.35), 725 (72.2%) female. The instrument includes a questionnaire, elaborated by the researchers, divided into four parts: characterization social-demographic, physical exercise practice, feeding, and mental health. Before the confinement, 99 (9.9%) students classify their mental health as poor and during the confinement 423 (42.2%) said that their mental health was poor (p≤0.001). Women presented 1.91 (CI=1.42-2.56; p≤0.001) more probabilities of having poor mental health and the students that did not practice physical exercise during the confinement had 1.56 (CI=1.22-2.04; p≤0.001) more chances of having poor mental health. Most students classified their mental health as inferior during confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with women and the lack of physical exercise being the factors that were most related to poor mental health.RESUMO - O atual contexto pandémico levou a diversas alterações na rotina dos estudantes de ensino superior, incluindo interrupções de aulas presenciais, implementação do ensino à distância, interrupção ou adiamento de estágios, entre outras, o que pode comprometer a saúde mental.
Association between musculoskeletal injuries and depressive symptoms among athletes: a systematic review
© 2023 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. This article is an open access article distributed under the terms and conditions of the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/).Musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries have a significant physical and psychological influence on an athlete's life. A systematic review of prospective cohort, cross-sectional, and case-control studies was undertaken in this study to analyze the association between MSK injuries with depressive symptoms in athletes. We searched on PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus, with data inception to 15 February 2023. The methodological quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Of the 3677 potential studies only nine were included. These studies showed a bidirectional association between MSK injuries and depressive symptoms. Athletes with MSK injuries had higher levels of depressive symptoms, which raises the likelihood of experiencing depression in the future. Women athletes had higher levels of depressive symptoms compared with men. The presence of depressive symptoms is a significant predictor of disability in athletes. Our findings suggest that coaches should be more aware of depressive symptoms, in order to prevent MSK injuries, and to monitor athletes following an MSK injury.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Comparison of levels of anxiety and depression among active and sedentary elderly
BACKGROUND: The anxiety and depression are a public health problem in the elderly. Currently some studies have been shown a positive association between physical activity and good mental health. OBJECTIVE: To compare the possible relationship between levels of anxiety and depression among active and sedentary elderly. METHODS: The sample comprised a total of 72 patients divided into one group of 38 elderly subjects (GS) and another group of 34 physically assets (GA). These answered a questionnaire with socio-demographic characteristics and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. RESULTS: The variables that influenced the presence of anxiety and depression were the level of physical activity (p < 0,001) and the level of instruction (p < 0,01). The GS showed 38 more probability to develop symptoms of anxiety and depression and subjects without qualifications had 11 more probability to develop these symptoms. For the GS 35 (92,1%) patients had levels of anxiety or depression and 3 (7,9%) did not. In GA, the presence of anxiety or depression were observed only in 8 (23,5%) and the remaining 26 (76,5%) revalidates not any kind of these symptoms (p < 0,05). DISCUSSION: Practicing physical activity may represent a very important factor to reduce levels of anxiety and depression in elderly.CONTEXTO: A ansiedade e a depressão constituem um problema de saúde pública nos idosos.
