Controversies in Exit Polling: Implementing a Racially Stratified Homogenous Precinct Approach
In November 2000, exit poll interviews with voters in Florida indicated that Al Gore won the state. As a result, many television networks declared Gore the winner of Florida, a pivotal state to winning the presidency in 2000. Only a few hours later, the first vote tallies from the Florida Secretary of State\u27s office revealed that George W. Bush was in fact leading in Florida. After 45 days of recounts and lawsuits, it was clear that the exit polls were wrong; Bush had won the state by the narrowest of margins. As a result of the flawed exit poll the media and pollsters scoured and reanalyzed the methodology used in 2000 to prepare and correct for the 2004 presidential election. The old system, Voter News Service (VNS) was scrapped entirely, and Edison-Mitofsky Research was chosen to implement a new and more accurate national exit poll in 2004 by a consortium of news organizations retained by the Associated Press called the National Election Pool (NEP). What happened? Exit poll results from Edison-Mitofsky showed John Kerry ahead in Ohio, Florida, and New Mexico—all states which he lost to Bush in 2004.

Elusive Active Galactic Nuclei
A fraction of active galactic nuclei do not show the classical Seyfert-type
signatures in their optical spectra, i.e. they are optically "elusive". X-ray
observations are an optimal tool to identify this class of objects. We combine
new Chandra observations with archival X-ray data in order to obtain a first
estimate of the fraction of elusive AGN in local galaxies and to constrain
their nature. Our results suggest that elusive AGN have a local density
comparable to or even higher than optically classified Seyfert nuclei. Most
elusive AGN are heavily absorbed in the X-rays, with gas column densities
exceeding 10^24 cm^-2, suggesting that their peculiar nature is associated with
obscuration. It is likely that in elusive AGN, the nuclear UV source is
completely embedded and the ionizing photons cannot escape, which prevents the
formation of a classical Narrow Line Region. Elusive AGN may contribute

BioTIME: A database of biodiversity time series for the Anthropocene.
MotivationThe BioTIME database contains raw data on species identities and abundances in ecological assemblages through time. These data enable users to calculate temporal trends in biodiversity within and amongst assemblages using a broad range of metrics. BioTIME is being developed as a community-led open-source database of biodiversity time series. Our goal is to accelerate and facilitate quantitative analysis of temporal patterns of biodiversity in the Anthropocene.Main types of variables includedThe database contains 8,777,413 species abundance records, from assemblages consistently sampled for a minimum of 2 years, which need not necessarily be consecutive. The Renewal and Persistence of Group Identification in American Politics
In 1965 Raymond Wolfinger made three important claims in his article, “The development and persistence of ethnic voting, ” that have not been significantly revisited in 40 years. First, that national origin identification remains salient for members of immigrant groups in America. Second, that ethnic group identity directly influences partisanship – “members of an ethnic group show an affinity for one party or the other which can not be explained solely as a result of other demographic characteristics, ” (896). Third, that the straight line assimilationist theory that ethnic groups eventually shed their ethnic ties is contradicted by the actual evidence. A common finding in the 1960s was that ethnic identity persisted into the third and fourth generation, contrary to the expectations of sociologist and political scientists. What Wolfinger and others could not have seen coming in 1965 were the new waves of Latin American and Asian immigrants coming to America and creating vibrant new ethnic groups with strong levels of group attachment and identity (indeed, Wolfinger stated, “mass immigration ended fifty years ago”). Since 1965, more than 30 million immigrants have come to America – 85 % of whom are not European – reinvigorating the debate over ethnic group identification and political participation
Group-based appeals and the Latino vote in 2012: How immigration became a mobilizing issue
a b s t r a c t We evaluate a theory of campaign learning in the context of immigration and the 2012 Latino vote. Following events in Nevada and Arizona after the 2008 election and prior to the 2012 election, we argue and show that Obama's campaign team learned from several Democratic U.S. Senate campaigns in how best to mobilize the Latino vote on the issue of immigration. As a result, we argue, this campaign learning led to an increase in the Latino vote for Obama. To demonstrate this, we compare a group-based appeals model against a traditional vote-choice model, and show that variables measuring Latino Outreach had the greatest impact on the 2012 Latino vote e above and beyond party identification and other traditional vote-choice predictors
