An Overview of Recent Ground Squirrel Bait Registration Research Supported By the California Bait Surcharge Program

    Get PDF
The California Department of Food and Agriculture Rodent Bait Surcharge Program is actively funding studies to develop and register safe, effective and practical ground squirrel baits. Under this program, Genesis Laboratories has conducted eight studies since 1994 designed to fulfill registration requirements for existing baits and to develop new baits. Areas of research include field efficacy, application methods and rates, non-target hazards, and residue loads in animal and plant tissues. Existing diphacinone and chlorophacinone treated oat groat baits have proven to be effective in controlling the California ground squirrel. Applications of these baits to alfalfa crops did not result in quantifiable residue loads. Preliminary studies found bromethalin treated oats may be effective against the California ground squirrel. Chlorophacinone treated cabbage bait was not effective against Belding\u27s ground squirrel

Preparation of zirconium from zirconium tetrafluoride

Increased interest in zirconium as a material of construction has resulted in numerous attempts to develop more economical processes for its production. Currently the Kroll Process, which reduces zirconium tetrachloride with magnesium, is used. A process developed at the Ames Laboratory of the Atomic Energy Commission involves the bomb reduction of zirconium tetrafluoride with calcium. By substituting magnesium for calcium, the cost of producing zirconium by this process might be considerably reduced

Students of technical universities often do not understand why their studies should include learning management skills (in addition to the study of economics). However, not only the experience of graduates but also the requirements of their future employers show that education in the field of the management should provide training, skills and practical testing. It is only a matter of time before graduates of technical university take up leading positions or become part of a team working on some complicated technical problem. A classical technical education is no longer sufficient and, aboveall, it is employees with knowledge of economics and with managerial skills, specifically soft skills that come to the fore. It is evident from ample experience that people’s individual dispositions play a role in learning soft skills, but many of these skills can also be acquired by progressive training. The question is which form of teaching to choose to enable necessary skills to be learned, without at the same discouraging students by offering them potentially unattractive courses. These are the issues that will be treated in this paper

Modification of carbon felt detector with copper microparticles

Pro ověření funkčnosti a použitelnosti elektrod byl pro analýzu reálného vzorku využit doplněk stravy s obsahem lysinu, kdy...The first aim of this work was to develop copper modified carbon felt electrode for detection of amino acids, which are not electrochemically active on ordinary carbon electrodes. Phenylalanine solution at a concentration 1.0 mmol dm-3 was chosen as the testing solution. Electrode modified with electrochemical deposition of copper from mixture of copper(II) sulphate and sodium sulphate provided very low responses which were decreasing during first measurements, apparently because of insufficient amount of copper. Therefore, further experiments were performed using copper microparticles as a modifier. Copper microparticles activated in nitric acid at a concentration 80 mmol dm-3 were applied at carbon felt by several techniques and in different parts of the felt, i.e. by stirring the felt in microparticles suspension, by dripping of the suspension to the part of the felt in contact with capillary (proximal), between two parts of the carbon felt (sandwich) and at a part of the carbon felt in contact with electrolyte in a measuring cell (distal). Electrodes modified in the distal and in the sandwich arrangement were chosen as the best ones. In the last part, calibration dependences for phenylalanine in concentration range from 0.025 mmol dm-3 to 1.0 mmol dm-3 were measured on the last two electrodes....Katedra analytické chemieDepartment of Analytical ChemistryFaculty of SciencePřírodovědecká fakult

Exposure of feral swine (Sus scrofa) in the United States to selected pathogens

Feral swine (Sus scrofa) are widely distributed in the United States.
