Past and present distribution of Acipenser sturio L., 1758 in Russia, and problems involving its restoration

The Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser sturio L., 1758 has always been rare in Russia. Its main distribution was concentrated in the Gulf of Finland, from which it ascended the Neva River and entered Lake Ladoga and some of its tributaries. The landlocked population of this species was known in Lake Ladoga. In the 20th century, there are recorded catches of only 25 adult and 12 juvenile specimens. Since the last specimen was caught in 1985, the Atlantic sturgeon can be considered as extirpated in the water bodies of Russia. While recovery plans have been drawn up, the lack of living specimens is a serious obstacle to re-establishing this population.El esturión atlántico Acipenser sturio L., 1758 ha sido siempre raro en Rusia. Free and conjugated androgen and progestin levels in the serum of stellate sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus Pallas) males treated with female coelomic fluid

Based on the supposition that female coelomic fluid contents have a certain chemical influence on sturgeons, blood serum concentrations of free and conjugated testosterone (T), 11-ketotestosterone (11KT), 17,20b,21-trihydroxy-4-pregnen- 3-one (20bS), 17,20b-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP), 11-desoxycortisol (S) and free progesterone (P4) have been measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA) and enzyme-linked immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA) in stellate sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus Pallas) males treated with female coelomic fluid (CF); CF steroid levels have also been analyzed. After treatment a significant elevation of free 20bS and glucuronidated DHP and S levels and the decrease of free T and KT levels have been observed. The obtained data support the idea that the components of CF may play some part in pheromonal effects for sturgeon reproduction

The author examines current applications of infrared spectroscopy in forensic practice and in various areas of science and technology. The paper includes an overview of objects that warrant the use of this forensic analytical technique. It is pointed out that not all capabilities of the method are currently put to use by forensic practitioners. It is also noted that methods based on infrared spectroscopy can be used for quantitative analysis, as well as the study of far and near infrared absorption spectra for forensic purposes.Рассмотрена современная практика применения ИК-спектроскопии в судебной экспертизе и различных областях науки и техники. Radial flow afterburner for event generators and the baryon puzzle

A simple afterburner including radial flow to the randomized transverse momentum obtained from event generators, Pythia and Hijing, has been implemented to calculate the $p/\pi$ ratios and compare them with available data. A coherent trend of qualitative agreement has been obtained in $pp$ collisions and in $Au+Au$ for various centralities. Those results indicate that the radial flow does play an important role in the so called baryon puzzle anomaly.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. To appear in Journal of Physics

Stellate sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus Pallas) females from the Volga River were analysed for sex steroids after hormonal stimulation. The results show a significant increase of sulfated sex steroid levels in serum and coelomic fluid (CF) at final maturation (FM).
