    Oscillating chiral currents in nanotubes: a route to nanoscale magnetic test tubes

    With a view to optimising the design of carbon-nanotube (CNT) windmills and to maximising the internal magnetic field generated by chiral currents, we present analytical results for the group velocity components of an electron flux through chiral carbon nanotubes. Chiral currents are shown to exhibit a rich behaviour and can even change sign and oscillate as the energy of the electrons is increased. We find that the transverse velocity and associated angular momentum of electrons is a maximum for non-metallic CNTs with a chiral angle of 18o^o. Such CNTs are therefore the optimal choice for CNT windmills and also generate the largest internal magnetic field for a given longitudinal current. For a longitudinal current of order 10−410^{-4} amps, this field can be of order 10−110^{-1}Teslas, which is sufficient to produce interesting spintronic effects and a significant contribution to the self inductance.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    Analysis and application of digital spectral warping in analog and mixed-signal testing

    Spectral warping is a digital signal processing transform which shifts the frequencies contained within a signal along the frequency axis. The Fourier transform coefficients of a warped signal correspond to frequency-domain 'samples' of the original signal which are unevenly spaced along the frequency axis. This property allows the technique to be efficiently used for DSP-based analog and mixed-signal testing. The analysis and application of spectral warping for test signal generation, response analysis, filter design, frequency response evaluation, etc. are discussed in this paper along with examples of the software and hardware implementation

    Dependence of nonlocal Gilbert damping on the ferromagnetic layer type in FM/Cu/Pt heterostructures

    We have measured the size effect in nonlocal Gilbert relaxation rate in FM(tFM_{FM}) / Cu (5nm) [/ Pt (2nm)] / Al(2nm) heterostructures, FM = \{ Ni81_{81}Fe19_{19}, Co60_{60}Fe20_{20}B20_{20}, pure Co\}. Common behavior is observed for three FM layers, where the additional relaxation obeys both a strict inverse power law dependence ΔG=K tn\Delta G =K \:t^{n}, n=−1.04±0.06n=-\textrm{1.04}\pm\textrm{0.06} and a similar magnitude K=224±40 Mhz⋅nmK=\textrm{224}\pm\textrm{40 Mhz}\cdot\textrm{nm}. As the tested FM layers span an order of magnitude in spin diffusion length λSDL\lambda_{SDL}, the results are in support of spin diffusion, rather than nonlocal resistivity, as the origin of the effect

    A simplified analysis of propulsion installation losses for computerized aircraft design

    A simplified method is presented for computing the installation losses of aircraft gas turbine propulsion systems. The method has been programmed for use in computer aided conceptual aircraft design studies that cover a broad range of Mach numbers and altitudes. The items computed are: inlet size, pressure recovery, additive drag, subsonic spillage drag, bleed and bypass drags, auxiliary air systems drag, boundary-layer diverter drag, nozzle boattail drag, and the interference drag on the region adjacent to multiple nozzle installations. The methods for computing each of these installation effects are described and computer codes for the calculation of these effects are furnished. The results of these methods are compared with selected data for the F-5A and other aircraft. The computer program can be used with uninstalled engine performance information which is currently supplied by a cycle analysis program. The program, including comments, is about 600 FORTRAN statements long, and uses both theoretical and empirical techniques

    Development of dispersion strengthened nickel-chromium alloy (Ni-Cr-ThO2) sheet for space shuttle vehicles, part 2

    Two dispersion strengthened nickel base alloy systems were developed for use at temperatures up to 1204 C(2200 F); TD nickel chromium (TDNiCr) and TD nickel chromium aluminum (TDNiCrA1). They are considered candidate materials for use on the thermal protection systems of the space shuttle and for long term use in aircraft gas turbine engine applications. Improved manufacturing processes were developed for the fabrication of TDNiCr sheet and foil to specifications. Sheet rolling process studies and extrusion studies were made on two aluminum containing alloys: Ni-16%Cr-3.5%A1-2%ThO2 and Ni-16%Cr-5.0%A12%ThO2. Over 1600 kg.(3500 lb.) of plate, sheet, foil, bar and extrusion products were supplied to NASA Centers for technology studies
