Trust in justice and the legitimacy of legal authorities: topline findings from a European comparative study

    Get PDF
Issues of public trust in justice and institutional legitimacy are becoming increasingly salient in debate about criminal justice across Europe. Legitimate authority can be defined as having three interlinked elements: (a) legality (acting according to the law); (b) shared values (values that are shared by those with authority and those subject to that authority); and (c) consent (the sense amongst the policed of a moral obligation to obey the authority). According to this definition, legitimacy is present not only when individuals recognise the authority of institutions and feel a corresponding duty of deference to them (consent); it is also present when individuals believe that justice institutions have a proper moral purpose (shared values), and that justice institutions follow their own rules as well as the rules that govern everyone in society (legality). With this definition in mind, we analyse in this chapter data from the fifth European Social Survey on relationships between public trust in justice institutions and public perceptions of the legitimacy of these institutions

What Can the Archaeology and History of Ephesus Tell Us About Paul\u27s Ministry there

What can the archaeology and history of Ephesus tell us about Paul’s ministry there? By examining the material evidence building by building and then adding layers of cultural and religious history, our aim is to begin to build a picture of the social framework in which Paul and his co-workers ministered. In attempting to understand the religiosity of the Ephesians and their codes of behaviour, we can expand our perspectives on the early Christian communities and ascertain the success of Paul’s missionary endeavours, despite the opposition he faced

Wide parameter search for isolated pulsars using the Hough transform

We use the Hough transform to analyze data from the second science run of the LIGO interferometers, to look for gravitational waves from isolated pulsars. We search over the whole sky and over a large range of frequencies and spin-down parameters. Our search method is based on the Hough transform, which is a semi-coherent, computationally efficient, and robust pattern recognition technique. We also present a validation of the search pipeline using hardware signal injections.Comment: Presented at GWDAW-9 in Annecy, France (Dec. 2004). 11 pages, 5 Figures. A CASE STUDY ON THE PRACTICE OF CARBON OFFSET PROJECTS IN MICHIGAN: FOREST PRACTITIONERS’ PERSPECTIVES

    Get PDF
This report examines the practice of carbon offset programs on private nonindustrial forestlands in the state of Michigan ass. Previously, the state of Michigan provided technical assistance for enrollment in carbon offsets through the Michigan Working Forest Carbon Offset Program, but this program has now been discontinued. Currently, private companies and nongovernmental organizations are developing projects throughout the state with nonindustrial private landowners. This descriptive analysis in this case study examines the roles of different forest practitioners who are working on carbon offsets, including private consulting foresters and foresters within Michigan public agencies. I review the academic and grey literature on practitioners, analyze the interviews for themes, and provide policy recommendations

ELEVATION IN RAT BRAIN HISTAMINE CONTENT AFTER FOCUSED MICROWAVE IRRADIATION 1

—Microwave irradiation focused on the head of small rodents is now widely used as a means of more accurately measuring acetylcholine, choline, cyclic AMP, and several other important brain constituents. Because of its probable neurotransmitter role and rapid turnover, a similar approach was taken to study brain histamine. Histamine was measured by a modified radio-enzymatic method and was found to be nearly tripled in brains from microwave treated rats, compared to decapitation controls (124 vs 42 ng/g). Possible explanations include a microwave-induced inactivation of histamine breakdown, a microwave-induced redistribution of previously unmeasured histamine, and microwave-induced histidine decarboxylation. Brain histamine remained unchanged up to 30 min after decapitation and microwave heated brains from decapitated rats also had elevated histamine levels, indicating that brain histamine levels in decapitated rats do not represent the remainder of a rapidly depleting pool. No evidence for previously unmeasured histamine was found. Furthermore, microwave irradiation did not enhance the formation of [ 3 H]histamine after intraventricular [ 3 H]histidine administration, indicating a lack of microwave-induced histidine decarboxylation. It is concluded that the elevation in rat brain histamine after focused microwave irradiation is probably not artifactual, although the mechanism responsible for this phenomenon remains obscure.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/65663/1/j.1471-4159.1977.tb09609.x.pd
