How Thin Can You Go? Performance of Thin Copper and Aluminum RF Coil Conductors

Purpose:
To evaluate the impact of emerging conductor technology on radio-frequency (RF) coils. Performance and resulting image quality of thin or alternate conductors (e.g., aluminum instead of copper) and thicknesses (9–600μm) are compared in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).
Methods:
Eight prototype RF coils (15 cm × 15 cm square loops) were constructed and bench tested to measure quality factor (Q). The coils used 6 mm wide conducting strips of either copper or aluminum of a few different thicknesses (copper: 17, 32, 35, 127, 600 μm; aluminum: 9, 13, 20, 127 μm) on acetate projector sheets for backing. Corresponding image SNR was measured at 0.48 T (20.56 MHz).
Results:
The coils spanned a range of unloaded quality factors from 89 to 390 and a five-fold range of losses. The image SNRs were consistent with the coils’ bench-measured efficiencies (0.33 to 0.73). Thin aluminum conductors (9 μm) led to the highest reduction in SNR (65% that of 127 μm copper). Thin copper (<32 μm) conductors lead to a much smaller decrease in SNR (approximately 10%) compared to 127 μm copper. No performance difference was observed between 127 μm thick copper and aluminum. The much thicker 600 μm copper bars only yield a 5% improvement in SNR.
Conclusion:
Even at 0.48 T copper RF coil conductors much thinner than those in conventional construction can be used while maintaining SNR greater than 50% that of thick copper. These emerging coil conductor technologies enable RF coil functionality that cannot be achieved otherwise
The impact of illness in patients with moderate to severe gastro-esophageal reflux disease
BACKGROUND: Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common disease. It impairs health related quality of life (HRQL). However, the impact on utility scores and work productivity in patients with moderate to severe GERD is not well known. METHODS: We analyzed data from 217 patients with moderate to severe GERD (mean age 50, SD 13.7) across 17 Canadian centers. Patients completed three utility instruments – the standard gamble (SG), the feeling thermometer (FT), and the Health Utilities Index 3 (HUI 3) – and several HRQL instruments, including Quality of Life in Reflux and Dyspepsia (QOLRAD) and the Medical Outcomes Short Form-36 (SF-36). All patients received a proton pump inhibitor, esomeprazole 40 mg daily, for four to six weeks. RESULTS: The mean scores on a scale from 0 (dead) to 1 (full health) obtained for the FT, SG, and HUI 3 were 0.67 (95% CI, 0.64 to 0.70), 0.76 (95% CI, 0.75 to 0.80), and 0.80 (95% CI, 0.77 to 0.82) respectively. The mean scores on the SF-36 were lower than the previously reported Canadian and US general population mean scores and work productivity was impaired. CONCLUSION: GERD has significant impact on utility scores, HRQL, and work productivity in patients with moderate to severe disease. Furthermore, the FT and HUI 3 provide more valid measurements of HRQL in GERD than the SG. After treatment with esomeprazole, patients showed improved HRQL
Helicobacter species in cancers of the gallbladder and extrahepatic biliary tract
Helicobacter species have been found in human bile and biliary tract (BT) tissue and are suspected to cause BT diseases, including gallbladder and extrahepatic cancers, collectively referred to in this work as BT cancers. We conducted a literature review of the epidemiological evidence linking the presence of Helicobacter species in bile or BT biopsies to BT cancers and benign diseases. Reports showed great variability with respect to study methods. Nine studies of BT cancers were identified, all with 30 or fewer BT cancers; eight included cancer-free control subjects and used polymerase chain reaction (PCR) as a means of Helicobacter species detection. In four of these studies, Helicobacter species were detected in patients with BT cancer significantly more frequently than in controls, at least when controls without BT diseases were used. In two studies, no Helicobacter species were detected in either cases or controls. Helicobacter species were also often detected in benign BT diseases such as gallstone disease or chronic cholecystitis. As our current knowledge relies on a few small studies that showed substantial differences, larger studies and more standardised protocols for detecting DNA and antibodies against Helicobacter species are needed to investigate a potential association with BT cancer
The Role of Repetitive Negative Thoughts in the Vulnerability for Emotional Problems in Non-Clinical Children
The current study examined the role of repetitive negative thoughts in the vulnerability for emotional problems in non-clinical children aged 8–13 years (N = 158). Children completed self-report questionnaires for assessing (1) neuroticism and behavioral inhibition as indicators of general vulnerability (2) worry and rumination which are two important manifestations of repetitive negative thoughts, and (3) emotional problems (i.e., anxiety, depression, and sleep difficulties). Results demonstrated that there were positive correlations between measures of general vulnerability, repetitive negative thoughts, and emotional problems. Further, support was found for a model in which worry and rumination acted as partial mediators in the relation between neuroticism and symptoms of anxiety and depression. In the case of sleep difficulties, no evidence was obtained for such a mediation model. In fact, data suggested that sleeping difficulties are better conceived as an epiphenomenon of high symptom levels of anxiety and depression or as a risk factor for the development of other types of psychopathology. Finally, besides neuroticism, the temperamental trait of behavioral inhibition appeared to play a unique direct role in the model predicting anxiety symptoms but not in the models predicting depressive symptoms or sleep difficulties. To conclude, the current findings seem to indicate that worry and rumination contribute to children’s vulnerability for anxiety and depression

Road traffic noise and children's inattention
BACKGROUND: An increasing number of children are exposed to road
traffic noise levels that may lead to adverse effects on health
and daily functioning. Childhood is a period of intense growth
and brain maturation, and children may therefore be especially
vulnerable to road traffic noise. The objective of the present
study was to examine whether road traffic noise was associated
with reported inattention symptoms in children, and whether this
association was mediated by sleep duration. METHODS: This study
was based on the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study
conducted by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. Parental
reports of children's inattention at age 8 were linked to
modelled levels of residential road traffic noise. We
investigated the association between inattention and noise
exposure during pregnancy (n = 1934), noise exposure averaged
over 5 years (age 3 to 8 years; n = 1384) and noise exposure at
age 8 years (n = 1384), using fractional logit response models.
The participants were children from Oslo, Norway. RESULTS: An
association with inattention at age 8 years was found for road
traffic noise exposure at age 8 years (coef = .0083, CI =
[.0012, .0154]; 1.2% point increase in inattention score per 10
dB increase in noise level), road traffic noise exposure average
for the last 5 years (coef = .0090, CI = [.0016, .0164]; 1.3%
point increase/10 dB), and for pregnancy road traffic noise
exposure for boys (coef = .0091, CI = [.0010, .0171]), but not
girls (coef = -.0021, CI = [-.0094, .0053]). Criteria for doing
mediation analyses were not fulfilled. CONCLUSION: Results
indicate that road traffic noise has a negative impact on
children's inattention. We found no mediation by sleep duration
