    On the relationship between bilevel decomposition algorithms and direct interior-point methods

    Engineers have been using bilevel decomposition algorithms to solve certain nonconvex large-scale optimization problems arising in engineering design projects. These algorithms transform the large-scale problem into a bilevel program with one upperlevel problem (the master problem) and several lower-level problems (the subproblems). Unfortunately, there is analytical and numerical evidence that some of these commonly used bilevel decomposition algorithms may fail to converge even when the starting point is very close to the minimizer. In this paper, we establish a relationship between a particular bilevel decomposition algorithm, which only performs one iteration of an interior-point method when solving the subproblems, and a direct interior-point method, which solves the problem in its original (integrated) form. Using this relationship, we formally prove that the bilevel decomposition algorithm converges locally at a superlinear rate. The relevance of our analysis is that it bridges the gap between the incipient local convergence theory of bilevel decomposition algorithms and the mature theory of direct interior-point methods

    Human capital as a factor of growth and employment at the regional level. The case of Spain

    We use statistical techniques to quantify the effects of school attainment on individual wages, participation rates and employment probabilities in Spain, and to measure the contribution of education to labour productivity at the regional level. These estimates are then combined with data on private and public expenditure on education and with information on taxes and social benefits to construct measures of the private and social returns to schooling, to explore the effects of public policies on private incentives to invest in human capital, and to analyse the long-term effects of schooling on public finances. The results are used, together with estimates of the returns to alternative assets, to draw some tentative conclusions regarding the adequacy of the aggregate investment patterns observed in the regions of Spain, and to identify changes in the design of national and EU cohesion and growth policies that may help enhance their effectiveness.human capital, growth, employment, returns to schooling

    Design and Manufacturing of an APTF to Test Fluid Behaviour in Microgravity Environment

    The present paper deals with the design and manufacturing of an APTF (Advanced Plateau Tank Facility) in order to carrying out earth experiments, previous to space experiments, of fluid behaviour in microgravity environment. This work has been done in collaboration between Manufacturing and Microgravity Laboratories in the Polytechnic University of Madrid, and analyses the requirements and restrictions that must be considered for an APTF design and manufacture. Mechanism employed in each part of the prototype are described in detail, emphasising those that suppose new solutions rather previous designs

    In the Line of Investigation that in the department of “Technical Drawing” in the School of Agriculture Engineering of Madrid, we carry out on the study of The Technical Curves and his singularities, we demonstrate an interesting property of the Logarithmic Spiral. The demonstrated property consists of which the logarithmic spiral is a autoisoptic curve, that is to say that if from a point P anyone of the spiral tangent straight lines draw up to the previous arc, these form a constant angle α. This demonstration is novel and in addition we get to contribute a method to calculate the angle α given the equation of the spiral

    An interior-point method for mpecs based on strictly feasible relaxations.

    An interior-point method for solving mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints (MPECs) is proposed. At each iteration of the algorithm, a single primaldual step is computed from each subproblem of a sequence. Each subproblem is defined as a relaxation of the MPEC with a nonempty strictly feasible region. In contrast to previous approaches, the proposed relaxation scheme preserves the nonempty strict feasibility of each subproblem even in the limit. Local and superlinear convergence of the algorithm is proved even with a less restrictive strict complementarity condition than the standard one. Moreover, mechanisms for inducing global convergence in practice are proposed. Numerical results on the MacMPEC test problem set demonstrate the fast-local convergence properties of the algorithm

    Intervención desde la farmacia comunitaria a pacientes atendidos en los servicios de ayuda domiciliaria municipal

    INTRODUCCIÓN Se describe el programa para la mejora del uso de la medicación en personas atendidas por los servicios de ayuda domiciliaria y se presentan los resultados económicos, clínicos y humanísticos de su aplicación en dos municipios de Gipuzkoa (Donostia-San Sebastián y Legazpi), durante el año 2008.MÉTODO Las farmacias enviaron al Colegio mensualmente los datos para su evaluación. Se calculó tanto el coste de la preparación de los blísteres como el ahorro producido. También se evaluó el incumplimiento midiendo el número de blísteres devueltos que no estaban completamente vacíos y la situación de polimedicación. Se analizó la satisfacción de los usuarios y cuidadores, y de los auxiliares por el personal del Ayuntamiento de Donostia. El Colegio se encargó de evaluar la satisfacción de los farmacéuticos. En todos los casos se utilizaron cuestionarios no validados elaborados ad hoc.RESULTADOS Se han analizado resultados de 13 farmacias con un máximo de 24 pacientes. El 95,6% estaban polimedicados. El 78,8% de los medicamentos prescritos pudieron ser incluidos en blísteres. Se prepararon 1.129 SPD de los que se inutilizaron 31. Además se retornaron 80 blísteres con algún comprimido en su interior. Durante el año de evaluación, se retiraron del sistema un total de 454 recetas que no fueron dispensadas por no ser necesarias. Ello produjo un ahorro global de 6581,73. El tiempo medio de preparación de los blísteres, por paciente y mes fue de 1hora y 36 minutos, lo que supuso un coste de 27,06al mes.     Undercovering the molecular mechanisms of lipid signalling at ER-PM contact sites in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) under abiotic stress conditions

    Abiotic stresses cause large reductions in crop production. Therefore, is important to understand how plants respond in order to develop varieties with increased resistance. Lipid-transport proteins (LTP) are emerging as key players of lipid signaling in response to numerous stresses. Specifically, SYT1, a protein first identified by its role in abiotic stress tolerance, is now recognized as an endoplasmic reticulum-plasma membrane contact site tether capable. Our recent data support that SYT1 in involved on non-vesicular lipid-transport of diacyl glycerol (DAG) through its SMP domain. This data together with the interaction of SYT1 with a diacyl glycerol kinase (DGK) suggest a lipid signaling pathway where the product of phospholipase C, diacylglycerol, might be simultaneously translocated from the plasma membrane to the endoplasmic-reticulum by SYT1 and phosphorylated to phosphatidic acid by DGK at the plasma membrane. Using in vitro biochemical approaches we are investigating the affinity of specific lipid species transported by SYT1 using lipid-competition assays, where a fluorescent lipid competes for SYT1 binding-pocket with different lipid species.     Modelling landscape management scenarios for equitable and sustainable futures in rural areas based on ecosystem services

    Scenario analysis is a useful technique to inform landscape planning of social-ecological systems by modelling future trends in ecosystem service supply and distribution. This is especially critical in floodplain agroecosystems of rural areas, which are at risk of losing riparian forest corridors due to increasing land use conversion for agricultural production and other ecosystem services due to rural abandonment. However, few studies investigating the effects of land management combine social and ecological modelling in scenario analyses. We estimated the supply of 16 ecosystem services under five alternative scenarios along two gradients: agricultural intensification of the floodplain and active ecological restoration of the riparian forest. We used redundancy analyses to detect ecosystem service bundles and interviews to identify societal gains and losses associated with each management scenario. Our results show how land management influences both the supply and distribution of ecosystem services. Scenarios promoting active ecological restoration supplied more services and benefited a larger range of societal sectors than scenarios focused on provisioning services. We also found two consistent bundles across scenarios, one related to less intensive food supply and another one related to outdoor activities. Interestingly, additional services were included in these bundles in the different scenarios, reflecting land management effects. Landscape scale management promoting both the conservation of ecosystem functioning and the sustainable use of provisioning services could supply a more balanced set of ecosystem services and benefit a larger number of societal sectors, contributing to more equitable and sustainable futures in rural areas

    A Fuzzy Rule-Based System to Predict Energy Consumption of Genetic Programming Algorithms

    In recent years, the energy-awareness has become one of the most interesting areas in our environmentally conscious society. Algorithm designers have been part of this, particularly when dealing with networked devices and, mainly, when handheld ones are involved. Although studies in this area has increased, not many of them have focused on Evolutionary Algorithms. To the best of our knowledge, few attempts have been performed before for modeling their energy consumption considering different execution devices. In this work, we propose a fuzzy rulebased system to predict energy comsumption of a kind of Evolutionary Algorithm, Genetic Prohramming, given the device in wich it will be executed, its main parameters, and a measurement of the difficulty of the problem addressed.
