When a TV programme is broadcasted, people naturally talk about what they’ve watched, are watching or are planning to watch. In this sense, Television works as a promoter of interpersonal communication, often being responsible for the creation of a common referential around which people dialogue. However, this role that television has been playing so far might be changing due to the fragmentation of television audiences, caused by an increasing offer of TV channels strengthened by the transition to the digital domain. This situation, summed to the increasing adoption of new devices and innovative ways of communication, gave rise to the conceptualization, prototyping and testing of an interactive television application, which might support and facilitate communication between viewers. This was the main idea of the work developed throughout this thesis. The technological transposition of interactions and traditional processes of communication (which the application guarantees) was aimed at the purpose of capitalizing the television potential as a means of interchange of thoughts and opinions, as well as promoting sociability. Globalization of networks (in which the application supports itself) together with its functionalities, means a real value because it allows a viewer to keep a conversation centred on a certain TV content, alert another viewer to something relevant or suggest him/her a certain programme from virtually any part of the world. Through the conceptualization of the application (based on a set of assumptions, which were a result of the theoretical contextualization carried out) was possible to define the main functional requirements and related solutions, in order to achieve the planned purposes. The high fidelity prototype developed presented itself as the best strategy to demonstrate the model of the application to a group of pilot users (distinguished by their level of technological literacy), so that the identified functional solutions, in terms of services and interface design, could be evaluated. It also helped determine the level of receptivity of the potential users. The final results made it possible answer the specific objectives that were previously drawn, thus making it possible to validate the usability of the prototype and the adequacy of the conceptual model (together with its functional solutions) towards the main goal of the application
A convergência TV-Web: motivações e modelos
No entanto,
potenciais utilizadores
An iTV audio description service: suggesting requirements and features for visually impaired users
The ongoing Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) switchover leads to an interesting opportunity for the implementation of advanced television services. Actually, these services can even be interactive, since it is foreseen that the required Set-Top Boxes (STB) could be equipped with an Internet connection. However, among the future clients of DTT there are a large number of elderly and visually impaired people who can not entirely benefit of these services due to their physical limitations. Nevertheless, considering that Interactive Television (iTV) services can contribute to improve life quality of this type of users, it is essential to apply accessibility, usability and design-oriented guidelines for their development. In this context, this paper introduces a research related to universal design applied to iTV, being its aim to propose an advanced and accessible audio description service. In order to perceive the visually impaired users’ problems and needs, a group of individuals was asked to participate in an interview
For seniors Television is the primary means of
entertainment and information. In it they seek
sensations that enhance their well-being what motivates
them to long periods of television consumption. Backing
up this closeness between senior and technological
artifacts that provide television consumption, the
research described here seeks, through an interactive
television (iTV) application in the provision of health care
and welfare, to define the most suitable viewer
identification system (sID) in this context. This iTV
application has components related aspects of health
(such as medication monitoring, informative videos, communication with health professionals), with aspects
of community (communication, information) and also the
events of daily life such as transport information,
weather, among other. It was made a case study based
on a functional prototype to define the sID most suitable
to this target audience

visitors of natural parks and other public and open spaces. Under this assumption, this paper reports on a selection of existent mobile park applications featuring a set of tests that helped electing their key features. The performed evaluation also allowed setting up a proposal for design guidelines aiming the development of such a kind of applications
Watching TV is changing and becoming more personalized as we witness a spread use of
interactive television, Personal Video Recorders (PVR) and Set-Top-Boxes (STB)
enabling access to time-shifted content and a large range of interactive services.
However, this technological mediation does not guarantee by itself an effective
personalization of content, since it relies on the STB identification being not appropriated
for a multi-viewer scenario. So, knowledge about who is in front of TV set becomes of
paramount importance, especially for TV operators’ they can provide services perfectly
targeted to the viewers.
In this context, elderly (avid consumers of television) are a specific type of users that can
benefit from services based on a non-intrusive identification system. This work aims to
study this issue and identify a layer of customizable services which can improve the
viewing experience of elderly.FCTiNeighbour TVPTDC/CCICOM/100824/200
Notification mechanisms in second-screen scenarios: towards a balanced user experience
As technological devices surrounding the television are changing, so are viewers’ habits. When the interactive Television industry turns its focus to the development of second-screen applications, this paper reports on a study aiming to analyse the impact, on users, of notifications in second-screen scenarios. As part of the study, the research team developed a prototype that simulated an application able to deliver synchronized information related with TV content, notifying the user – through visual, audio and haptic stimuli - whenever new content was displayed in the tablet. The study included observation sessions, conducted in laboratory settings, with participants (N=12) being invited to watch a 15-minute film while using the application. Tests were conducted under a cognitive walk-through methodology, and data collected through direct observation and questionnaires. Results show that to achieve a balanced user experience in second-screen scenarios notifications on tablet should be combined with visual notifications on TV
Discovering TV contents in a second screen app: perspectives from Portuguese and Brazilian markets
The actual trends in the TV ecosystem present considerable social, organisational and technological challenges in the value-chain
of Pay-TV operators. Among these is the global increase in bandwidth, the shifting of the storage capacity in the cloud, and the
affordability of traditional content providers when facing the competitiveness of OTT content. In this framework, Pay-TV
operators are presenting their customers with a huge offer of contents available from linear-TV, Catch-up TV and VoD services.
However, this overloaded TV ecosystem is likely to lead viewers to get lost and face difficulties when deciding what to watch on
TV. To overcome these difficulties and be competitive, operators need to provide innovative and trustable solutions, alternative
to traditional EPGs, enabling users to discover the right content for a specific context.
To target this problem, a second screen application (GUIDER) was developed to offer an original user interface, based on a
multidimensional spatial representation of TV contents for those mindless zapping situations where viewers do not know, in
advance, what they are in the mood to watch.
This paper reports on the evaluation of the GUIDER App, aiming to determine the level of interest in the several features
implemented and in the filtering criteria available; identify usability issues; and predicting the future uses of the App in domestic
scenarios. The evaluation was made in Portugal and Brazil with a convenience sample of 20 participants in each country. Despite
the differences in the TV ecosystems, both countries appear to be promising markets for this new kind of second screen
applications, with Brazilians showing a higher perception of the added value of GUIDER
