Social bonds and supplier allocation of resources to business customers
This paper addresses questions about the effect that social bonds between relationship partners have on the way in which a supplier allocates resources to its relationship with a buyer. Two key questions the paper addresses are the following. In business markets, does strength of social bonds that a supplier perceives with a specific customer influence the supplier’s allocations of financial, physical, time, and intangible resources to this customer relative to other customers? If social bonding does uniquely impact supplier allocation of resources to customers, does the impact vary by length of the supplier-customer relationship? The paper proposes and empirically examines three alternative theories (honeymoon, maturity, and imprinting theories) that indicate how suppliers’ perceptions of social bonds with customers influence the suppliers’ allocations of resources and also examines the proposition that social bonding contributes uniquely to supplier allocations. Honeymoon theory is the proposal that the positive influence of social bonding on supplier resource allocation is greatest in relatively new supplier-customer relationships versus long-term relationships. Maturity theory proposes the opposite—the positive influence of social bonding on supplier resources allocation is greatest in long-term versus new relationships. Imprinting theory proposes that no interaction occurs between the effects of social bonding and length of supplier-customer relationship on supplier resource allocations. The theoretical grounding for the study extends the IMP stream of research, using ideas including the concepts of relationship marketing theory and Homans’ framework for social behavior
Algebraic Approach to Interacting Quantum Systems
We present an algebraic framework for interacting extended quantum systems to
study complex phenomena characterized by the coexistence and competition of
different states of matter. We start by showing how to connect different
(spin-particle-gauge) {\it languages} by means of exact mappings (isomorphisms)
that we name {\it dictionaries} and prove a fundamental theorem establishing
when two arbitrary languages can be connected. These mappings serve to unravel
symmetries which are hidden in one representation but become manifest in
another. In addition, we establish a formal link between seemingly unrelated
physical phenomena by changing the language of our model description. This link
leads to the idea of {\it universality} or equivalence. Moreover, we introduce
the novel concept of {\it emergent symmetry} as another symmetry guiding
principle. By introducing the notion of {\it hierarchical languages}, we
determine the quantum phase diagram of lattice models (previously unsolved) and
unveil hidden order parameters to explore new states of matter. Hierarchical
languages also constitute an essential tool to provide a unified description of
phases which compete and coexist. Overall, our framework provides a simple and
systematic methodology to predict and discover new kinds of orders. Another
aspect exploited by the present formalism is the relation between condensed
matter and lattice gauge theories through quantum link models. We conclude
discussing applications of these dictionaries to the area of quantum
information and computation with emphasis in building new models of computation
and quantum programming languages.Comment: 44 pages, 14 psfigures. Advances in Physics 53, 1 (2004
Exploiting Locally Imposed Anisotropies in (Ga,Mn)As: a Non-volatile Memory Device
Progress in (Ga,Mn)As lithography has recently allowed us to realize
structures where unique magnetic anisotropy properties can be imposed locally
in various regions of a given device. We make use of this technology to
fabricate a device in which we study transport through a constriction
separating two regions whose magnetization direction differs by 90 degrees. We
find that the resistance of the constriction depends on the flow of the
magnetic field lines in the constriction region and demonstrate that such a
structure constitutes a non-volatile memory device
Weighted ergodic theorems for Banach-Kantorovich lattice
In the present paper we prove weighted ergodic theorems and multiparameter
weighted ergodic theorems for positive contractions acting on
. Our main tool is the use of methods of
measurable bundles of Banach-Kantorovich lattices.Comment: 11 page
Multiple sclerosis risk variants regulate gene expression in innate and adaptive immune cells
At least 200 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) risk. A key function that could mediate SNP-encoded MS risk is their regulatory effects on gene expression. We performed microarrays using RNA extracted from purified immune cell types from 73 untreated MS cases and 97 healthy controls and then performed Cis expression quantitative trait loci mapping studies using additive linear models. We describe MS risk expression quantitative trait loci associations for 129 distinct genes. By extending these models to include an interaction term between genotype and phenotype, we identify MS risk SNPs with opposing effects on gene expression in cases compared with controls, namely, rs2256814 MYT1 in CD4 cells (q = 0.05) and rs12087340 RF00136 in monocyte cells (q = 0.04). The rs703842 SNP was also associated with a differential effect size on the expression of the METTL21B gene in CD8 cells of MS cases relative to controls (q = 0.03). Our study provides a detailed map of MS risk loci that function by regulating gene expression in cell types relevant to MS
Determinant representations of scalar products for the open XXZ chain with non-diagonal boundary terms
With the help of the F-basis provided by the Drinfeld twist or factorizing
F-matrix for the open XXZ spin chain with non-diagonal boundary terms, we
obtain the determinant representations of the scalar products of Bethe states
of the model.Comment: Latex file, 28 pages, based on the talk given by W. -L. Yang at

Chaste: an open source C++ library for computational physiology and biology
Chaste - Cancer, Heart And Soft Tissue Environment - is an open source C++ library for the computational simulation of mathematical models developed for physiology and biology. Code development has been driven by two initial applications: cardiac electrophysiology and cancer development. A large number of cardiac electrophysiology studies have been enabled and performed, including high performance computational investigations of defibrillation on realistic human cardiac geometries. New models for the initiation and growth of tumours have been developed. In particular, cell-based simulations have provided novel insight into the role of stem cells in the colorectal crypt. Chaste is constantly evolving and is now being applied to a far wider range of problems. The code provides modules for handling common scientific computing components, such as meshes and solvers for ordinary and partial differential equations (ODEs/PDEs). Re-use of these components avoids the need for researchers to "re-invent the wheel" with each new project, accelerating the rate of progress in new applications. Chaste is developed using industrially-derived techniques, in particular test-driven development, to ensure code quality, re-use and reliability. In this article we provide examples that illustrate the types of problems Chaste can be used to solve, which can be run on a desktop computer. We highlight some scientific studies that have used or are using Chaste, and the insights they have provided. The source code, both for specific releases and the development version, is available to download under an open source Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) licence at http://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/chaste, together with details of a mailing list and links to documentation and tutorials
