Conformally rescaled spacetimes and Hawking radiation
We study various derivations of Hawking radiation in conformally rescaled
metrics. We focus on two important properties, the location of the horizon
under a conformal transformation and its associated temperature. We find that
the production of Hawking radiation cannot be associated in all cases to the
trapping horizon because its location is not invariant under a conformal
transformation. We also find evidence that the temperature of the Hawking
radiation should transform simply under a conformal transformation, being
invariant for asymptotic observers in the limit that the conformal

A systematic review of randomised controlled trials on the effectiveness of exercise programs on lumbo pelvic pain among postnatal women
Background: A substantial number of women tend to be affected by Lumbo Pelvic Pain (LPP) following child birth.
Physical exercise is indicated as a beneficial method to relieve LPP, but individual studies appear to suggest mixed
findings about its effectiveness. This systematic review aimed to synthesise evidence from randomised controlled trials on the effectiveness of exercise on LPP among postnatal women to inform policy, practice and future research.
Methods: A systematic review was conducted of all randomised controlled trials published between January 1990 and July 2014, identified through a comprehensive search of following databases: PubMed, PEDro, Embase, Cinahl, Medline, SPORTDiscus, Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group’s Trials Register, and electronic libraries of authors’institutions.
Randomised controlled trials were eligible for inclusion if the intervention comprised of postnatal exercise for women
with LPP onset during pregnancy or within 3 months after delivery and the outcome measures included changes in
LPP. Selected articles were assessed using the PEDro Scale for methodological quality and findings were synthesised narratively as meta-analysis was found to be inappropriate due to heterogeneity among included studies.
Results: Four randomised controlled trials were included, involving 251 postnatal women. Three trials were rated as
of ‘good’ methodological quality. All trials, except one, were at low risk of bias. The trials included physical exercise
programs with varying components, differing modes of delivery, follow up times and outcome measures. Intervention
in one trial, involving physical therapy with specific stabilising exercises, proved to be effective in reducing LPP
intensity. An improvement in gluteal pain on the right side was reported in another trial and a significant difference in
pain frequency in another.
Conclusion: Our review indicates that only few randomised controlled trials have evaluated the effectiveness of
exercise on LPP among postnatal women. There is also a great amount of variability across existing trials in the
components of exercise programs, modes of delivery, follow up times and outcome measures. While there is some
evidence to indicate the effectiveness of exercise for relieving LPP, further good quality trials are needed to ascertain
the most effective elements of postnatal exercise programs suited for LPP treatment
Two rapid assays for screening of patulin biodegradation

during postharvest storage. Patulin is toxic to a wide range
of organisms, including humans, animals, fungi and bacteria.
Wash water from apple packing and processing
houses often harbours patulin and fungal spores, which can
contaminate the environment. Ubiquitous epiphytic yeasts,
such as Rhodosporidium kratochvilovae strain LS11 which
is a biocontrol agent of P. expansum in apples, have the
capacity to resist the toxicity of patulin and to biodegrade
it. Two non-toxic products are formed. One is desoxypatulinic
acid. The aim of the work was to develop rapid,
high-throughput bioassays for monitoring patulin degradation
in multiple samples. Escherichia coli was highly
sensitive to patulin, but insensitive to desoxypatulinic acid.
This was utilized to develop a detection test for patulin,
replacing time-consuming thin layer chromatography or
high-performance liquid chromatography. Two assays for patulin degradation were developed, one in liquid medium
and the other in semi-solid medium. Both assays allow the
contemporary screening of a large number of samples. The
liquid medium assay utilizes 96-well microtiter plates and
was optimized for using a minimum of patulin. The semisolid
medium assay has the added advantage of slowing
down the biodegradation, which allows the study and isolation
of transient degradation products. The two assays are
complementary and have several areas of utilization, from
screening a bank of microorganisms for biodegradation
ability to the study of biodegradation pathways
For which side the bell tolls: The laterality of approach-avoidance associative networks
The two hemispheres of the brain appear to play different roles in emotion and/or motivation. A great deal of previous research has examined the valence hypothesis (left hemisphere = positive; right = negative), but an increasing body of work has supported the motivational hypothesis (left hemisphere = approach; right = avoidance) as an alternative. The present investigation (N = 117) sought to provide novel support for the latter perspective. Left versus right hemispheres were briefly activated by neutral lateralized auditory primes. Subsequently, participants categorized approach versus avoidance words as quickly and accurately as possible. Performance in the task revealed that approach-related thoughts were more accessible following left-hemispheric activation, whereas avoidance-related thoughts were more accessible following right-hemispheric activation. The present results are the first to examine such lateralized differences in accessible motivational thoughts, which may underlie more “downstream” manifestations of approach and avoidance motivation such as judgments, decision making, and behavior
Honey bee foraging distance depends on month and forage type
To investigate the distances at which honey bee foragers collect nectar and pollen, we analysed 5,484 decoded waggle dances made to natural forage sites to determine monthly foraging distance for each forage type. Firstly, we found significantly fewer overall dances made for pollen (16.8 %) than for non-pollen, presumably nectar (83.2 %; P < 2.2 × 10−23). When we analysed distance against month and forage type, there was a significant interaction between the two factors, which demonstrates that in some months, one forage type is collected at farther distances, but this would reverse in other months. Overall, these data suggest that distance, as a proxy for forage availability, is not significantly and consistently driven by need for one type of forage over the other
Evidence for distinct coastal and offshore communities of bottlenose dolphins in the north east Atlantic.
Bottlenose dolphin stock structure in the northeast Atlantic remains poorly understood. However, fine scale photo-id data have shown that populations can comprise multiple overlapping social communities. These social communities form structural elements of bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) [corrected] populations, reflecting specific ecological and behavioural adaptations to local habitats. We investigated the social structure of bottlenose dolphins in the waters of northwest Ireland and present evidence for distinct inshore and offshore social communities. Individuals of the inshore community had a coastal distribution restricted to waters within 3 km from shore. These animals exhibited a cohesive, fission-fusion social organisation, with repeated resightings within the research area, within a larger coastal home range. The offshore community comprised one or more distinct groups, found significantly further offshore (>4 km) than the inshore animals. In addition, dorsal fin scarring patterns differed significantly between inshore and offshore communities with individuals of the offshore community having more distinctly marked dorsal fins. Specifically, almost half of the individuals in the offshore community (48%) had characteristic stereotyped damage to the tip of the dorsal fin, rarely recorded in the inshore community (7%). We propose that this characteristic is likely due to interactions with pelagic fisheries. Social segregation and scarring differences found here indicate that the distinct communities are likely to be spatially and behaviourally segregated. Together with recent genetic evidence of distinct offshore and coastal population structures, this provides evidence for bottlenose dolphin inshore/offshore community differentiation in the northeast Atlantic. We recommend that social communities should be considered as fundamental units for the management and conservation of bottlenose dolphins and their habitat specialisations
On-demand semiconductor single-photon source with near-unity indistinguishability
Single photon sources based on semiconductor quantum dots offer distinct
advantages for quantum information, including a scalable solid-state platform,
ultrabrightness, and interconnectivity with matter qubits. A key prerequisite
for their use in optical quantum computing and solid-state networks is a high
level of efficiency and indistinguishability. Pulsed resonance fluorescence
(RF) has been anticipated as the optimum condition for the deterministic
generation of high-quality photons with vanishing effects of dephasing. Here,
we generate pulsed RF single photons on demand from a single,
microcavity-embedded quantum dot under s-shell excitation with 3-ps laser
pulses. The pi-pulse excited RF photons have less than 0.3% background
contributions and a vanishing two-photon emission probability.
Non-postselective Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between two successively emitted
photons is observed with a visibility of 0.97(2), comparable to trapped atoms
and ions. Two single photons are further used to implement a high-fidelity

Pneumococcal carriage in sub-Saharan Africa--a systematic review.
BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal epidemiology varies geographically and few data are available from the African continent. We assess pneumococcal carriage from studies conducted in sub-Saharan Africa (sSA) before and after the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) era. METHODS: A search for pneumococcal carriage studies published before 2012 was conducted to describe carriage in sSA. The review also describes pneumococcal serotypes and assesses the impact of vaccination on carriage in this region. RESULTS: Fifty-seven studies were included in this review with the majority (40.3%) from South Africa. There was considerable variability in the prevalence of carriage between studies (I-squared statistic = 99%). Carriage was higher in children and decreased with increasing age, 63.2% (95% CI: 55.6-70.8) in children less than 5 years, 42.6% (95% CI: 29.9-55.4) in children 5-15 years and 28.0% (95% CI: 19.0-37.0) in adults older than 15 years. There was no difference in the prevalence of carriage between males and females in 9/11 studies. Serotypes 19F, 6B, 6A, 14 and 23F were the five most common isolates. A meta-analysis of four randomized trials of PCV vaccination in children aged 9-24 months showed that carriage of vaccine type (VT) serotypes decreased with PCV vaccination; however, overall carriage remained the same because of a concomitant increase in non-vaccine type (NVT) serotypes. CONCLUSION: Pneumococcal carriage is generally high in the African continent, particularly in young children. The five most common serotypes in sSA are among the top seven serotypes that cause invasive pneumococcal disease in children globally. These serotypes are covered by the two PCVs recommended for routine childhood immunization by the WHO. The distribution of serotypes found in the nasopharynx is altered by PCV vaccination
Graphene plasmonics
Two rich and vibrant fields of investigation, graphene physics and
plasmonics, strongly overlap. Not only does graphene possess intrinsic plasmons
that are tunable and adjustable, but a combination of graphene with noble-metal
nanostructures promises a variety of exciting applications for conventional
plasmonics. The versatility of graphene means that graphene-based plasmonics
may enable the manufacture of novel optical devices working in different
frequency ranges, from terahertz to the visible, with extremely high speed, low
driving voltage, low power consumption and compact sizes. Here we review the

Application of Graphene within Optoelectronic Devices and Transistors
Scientists are always yearning for new and exciting ways to unlock graphene's
true potential. However, recent reports suggest this two-dimensional material
may harbor some unique properties, making it a viable candidate for use in
optoelectronic and semiconducting devices. Whereas on one hand, graphene is
highly transparent due to its atomic thickness, the material does exhibit a
strong interaction with photons. This has clear advantages over existing
materials used in photonic devices such as Indium-based compounds. Moreover,
the material can be used to 'trap' light and alter the incident wavelength,
forming the basis of the plasmonic devices. We also highlight upon graphene's
nonlinear optical response to an applied electric field, and the phenomenon of
saturable absorption. Within the context of logical devices, graphene has no
discernible band-gap. Therefore, generating one will be of utmost importance.
Amongst many others, some existing methods to open this band-gap include
chemical doping, deformation of the honeycomb structure, or the use of carbon
nanotubes (CNTs). We shall also discuss various designs of transistors,
including those which incorporate CNTs, and others which exploit the idea of
quantum tunneling. A key advantage of the CNT transistor is that ballistic
transport occurs throughout the CNT channel, with short channel effects being
minimized. We shall also discuss recent developments of the graphene tunneling
transistor, with emphasis being placed upon its operational mechanism. Finally,
we provide perspective for incorporating graphene within high frequency
