A demonstration of ERTS-1 analog and digital techniques applied to strip mining in Maryland and West Virginia
The largest contour strip mining operations in western Maryland and West Virginia are located within the Georges Creek and the Upper Potomac Basins. These two coal basins lie within the Georges Creek (Wellersburg) syncline. The disturbed strip mine areas were delineated with the surrounding geological and vegetation features using ERTS-1 data in both analog (imagery) and digital form. The two digital systems used were: (1) the ERTS-Analysis system, a point-by-point digital analysis of spectral signatures based on known spectral values, and (2) the LARS Automatic Data Processing System. The digital techniques being developed will later be incorporated into a data base for land use planning. These two systems aided in efforts to determine the extent and state of strip mining in this region. Aircraft data, ground verification information, and geological field studies also aided in the application of ERTS-1 imagery to perform an integrated analysis that assessed the adverse effects of strip mining. The results indicated that ERTS can both monitor and map the extent of strip mining to determine immediately the acreage affected and indicate where future reclamation and revegetation may be necessary

Anisotropy, phonon modes, and lattice anharmonicity from dielectric function tensor analysis of monoclinic cadmium tungstate
We determine the frequency dependence of four independent CdWO Cartesian
dielectric function tensor elements by generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry
within mid-infrared and far-infrared spectral regions. Single crystal surfaces
cut under different angles from a bulk crystal, (010) and (001), are
investigated. From the spectral dependencies of the dielectric function tensor
and its inverse we determine all long wavelength active transverse and
longitudinal optic phonon modes with and symmetry as well as their
eigenvectors within the monoclinic lattice. We thereby demonstrate that such
information can be obtained completely without physical model line shape
analysis in materials with monoclinic symmetry. We then augment the effect of
lattice anharmonicity onto our recently described dielectric function tensor
model approach for materials with monoclinic and triclinic crystal symmetries
[Phys. Rev. B, 125209 (2016)], and we obtain excellent match between all
measured and modeled dielectric function tensor elements. All phonon mode
frequency and broadening parameters are determined in our model approach. We
also perform density functional theory phonon mode calculations, and we compare
our results obtained from theory, from direct dielectric function tensor
analysis, and from model lineshape analysis, and we find excellent agreement
between all approaches. We also discuss and present static and above
reststrahlen spectral range dielectric constants. Our data for CdWO are in
excellent agreement with a recently proposed generalization of the
Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relation for materials with low crystal symmetry [Phys.

Endurance test and evaluation of alkaline water electrolysis cells
Utilization in the development of multi-kW low orbit power systems is discussed. The following technological developments of alkaline water electrolysis cells for space power application were demonstrated: (1) four 92.9 cm2 single water electrolysis cells, two using LST's advanced anodes and two using LST's super anodes; (2) four single cell endurance test stands for life testing of alkaline water electrolyte cells; (3) the solid performance of the advanced electrode and 355 K; (4) the breakthrough performance of the super electrode; (5) the four single cells for over 5,000 hours each significant cell deterioration or cell failure. It is concluded that the static feed water electrolysis concept is reliable and due to the inherent simplicity of the passive water feed mechanism coupled with the use of alkaline electrolyte has greater potential for regenerative fuel cell system applications than alternative electrolyzers. A rise in cell voltage occur after 2,000-3,000 hours which was attributed to deflection of the polysulfone end plates due to creepage of the thermoplastic. More end plate support was added, and the performance of the cells was restored to the initial performance level
A numerical study of forced lithospheric thinning
Subsolidus lithospheric thinning by mantle plumes may be involved in the creation of swells, hotspots, and rifts. Among the major questions concerning this process are the timescale on which it occurs and the structure of the plumes. The lithosphere is known to have been substantially thinned in 10 Ma or less. Current studies are focused on the lithospheric thinning by time-dependent plumes hypothesized to have large temperature differences across them
