We discuss the use of the WKB ansatz in a variety of parabolic problems involving a small parameter. We analyse the Stefan problem for small latent heat, the Black--Scholes problem for an American put option, and some nonlinear diffusion equations, in each case constructing an asymptotic solution by the use of ray methods
The demise of a model? The state of collective bargaining and worker representation in Germany.
This article investigates collective bargaining trends in the German private sector since 2000. Using data from the IAB Establishment Panel and the German Establishment History Panel, it provides both cross-sectional and longitudinal evidence on these developments. It confirms that the hemorrhaging of sectoral bargaining, first observed in the 1980s and 1990s, is ongoing. Furthermore, works councils are also in decline, so that the dual system also displays erosion. For their part, any increases in collective bargaining at firm level have been minimal in recent years, while the behavior of newly-founded and closing establishments does not seem to lie at the root of a burgeoning collective bargaining free sector. Although there are few obvious signs of an organic reversal of the process, some revitalization of the bargaining system from above is implied by the labor policies of the new coalition government

Modelling the influence of the process inputs on the removal of surface contaminants from Ti-6Al-4V linear friction welds
The linear friction welding (LFW) process is finding increasing interest from industry for the fabrication of near-net-shape, titanium alloy Ti–6Al–4V, aerospace components. Currently, the removal of surface contaminants, such as oxides and foreign particles, from the weld interface into the flash is not fully understood. To address this problem, two-dimensional (2D) computational models were developed using the finite element analysis (FEA) software DEFORM and validated with experiments. The key findings showed that the welds made with higher applied forces required less burn-off to completely remove the surface contaminants from the interface into the flash; the interface temperature increased as the applied force was decreased or the rubbing velocity increased; and the boundary temperature between the rapid flash formation and negligible material flow was approximately 970 °C. An understanding of these phenomena is of particular interest for the industrialisation of near-net-shape titanium alloy aerospace components.EPSRC, Boeing Company, Welding Institut
Characterization of Navassa National Wildlife Refuge: A preliminary report for NF-06-05 (NOAA ship "Nancy Foster", April 18-30, 2006)
Navassa is a small, undeveloped island in the Windward Passage between Jamaica and Haiti. It was designated a National Wildlife Refuge under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1999, but the remote location makes management and enforcement challenging, and the area is regularly fished by artisanal fishermen from Haiti. In April 2006, the NOAA Center for Coastal Fisheries and Habitat Research conducted a research cruise to Navassa. The cruise produced the first high-resolution multibeam bathymetry for the area, which will facilitate habitat mapping and assist in refuge management. A major emphasis of the cruise was to study the impact of Haitian fishing gear on benthic habitats and fish communities; however, in 10 days on station only one small boat was observed with five fishermen and seven traps. Fifteen monitoring stations were established to characterize fish and benthic communities along the deep (28-34 m) shelf, as these areas have been largely unstudied by previous cruises. The fish communities included numerous squirrelfishes, triggerfishes, and parrotfishes. Snappers and grouper were also present but no small individuals were observed. Similarly, conch surveys indicated the population was in low abundance and was heavily skewed towards adults. Analysis of the benthic photoquadrats is currently underway. Other cruise activities included installation of a temperature logger network, sample collection for stable isotope analyses to examine trophic structure, and drop camera surveys to ground-truth habitat maps and overhead imagery. Cas9 interrogates DNA in discrete steps modulated by mismatches and supercoiling.
The CRISPR-Cas9 nuclease has been widely repurposed as a molecular and cell biology tool for its ability to programmably target and cleave DNA. Cas9 recognizes its target site by unwinding the DNA double helix and hybridizing a 20-nucleotide section of its associated guide RNA to one DNA strand, forming an R-loop structure. A dynamic and mechanical description of R-loop formation is needed to understand the biophysics of target searching and develop rational approaches for mitigating off-target activity while accounting for the influence of torsional strain in the genome. Here we investigate the dynamics of Cas9 R-loop formation and collapse using rotor bead tracking (RBT), a single-molecule technique that can simultaneously monitor DNA unwinding with base-pair resolution and binding of fluorescently labeled macromolecules in real time. By measuring changes in torque upon unwinding of the double helix, we find that R-loop formation and collapse proceed via a transient discrete intermediate, consistent with DNA:RNA hybridization within an initial seed region. Using systematic measurements of target and off-target sequences under controlled mechanical perturbations, we characterize position-dependent effects of sequence mismatches and show how DNA supercoiling modulates the energy landscape of R-loop formation and dictates access to states competent for stable binding and cleavage. Consistent with this energy landscape model, in bulk experiments we observe promiscuous cleavage under physiological negative supercoiling. The detailed description of DNA interrogation presented here suggests strategies for improving the specificity and kinetics of Cas9 as a genome engineering tool and may inspire expanded applications that exploit sensitivity to DNA supercoiling
Kinetics of Surfactant Adsorption at Fluid/Fluid Interfaces: Non-ionic Surfactants
We present a model treating the kinetics of adsorption of soluble
surface-active molecules at the interface between an aqueous solution and
another fluid phase. The model accounts for both the diffusive transport inside
the solution and the kinetics taking place at the interface using a free-energy
formulation. In addition, it offers a general method of calculating dynamic
surface tensions. Non-ionic surfactants are shown, in general, to undergo a

Which variables influence farmer adoption of genetically modified orphan crops? Measuring attitudes and intentions to adopt gm matooke banana in Uganda
Which farmers are most likely to adopt genetically modified (GM) versions of African carbohydrate staples (also known as orphan crops)? This study investigates the variables that determine attitudes and intentions to adopt matooke banana in Uganda. Participatory ranking exercises undertaken with 167 randomly selected farmers and focus groups consisting of an additional 94 farmers suggest that attitudes and potential patterns of adoption will vary significantly according to region, farm size, membership in a farmer's association, previous experience with improved varieties and visits from extension workers. This research underscores the potential differentiated impacts of the commercialization of GM crops among African farmers
