The purpose of this study is to analyze CO2 emissions according to transportation energy consumption. It is targeted at the transportation sector which accounts for about 16 percent of domestic greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, it sets city-regions on the basis of travel patterns. This is to reflect that traffic patterns used by passenger car are becoming wide beyond the administrative district. So it sets regions of commuting trips and daily trips, and sets city-regions by integrating them. Then this study analyzes the city-regional transportation energy consumption and CO2 emissions by using VKT(Vehicle Kilometer Travelled) per person. Futhermore, it makes city-regional profiles and classifies the city-regions by aggregating factors to affect CO2 emissions. As a empirical analysis result, Korea's 162 cities and countries set to 23 city-regions except for Ulleung-gun. Compared with each city-region, average VKTs are higher in small-medium sized city-regions than metropolitan. Also VKTs per person are longer in the cities and countries located nearby metropolitan. It suggests that the city-region is needed to measure the transportation energy consumption for reducing CO2 emissions. This study builds up the city-regional profiles and classifies into 5 types according to the transportation energy consumption factors. Each type has different characteristics of factors affecting the transport energy consumption. The results of this study show that the city-region should be considered the unit to reduce the transport energy consumption and establish more effective CO2 emissions reduction.
