Cardiothoracic surgery at a crossroads: The impact of disruptive technologic change

    Get PDF
At the beginning of the twenty-first century, cardiothoracic surgery is arguably the most successful of all medical specialties. There are effective treatments including transplantation, for almost all cardiac and thoracic diseases that can be performed with low morbidity and mortality. Cardiothoracic surgeons have mastered technical difficulties through innovation, hard work, planning and skill. Yet in the past decade, the primacy of cardiothoracic surgery has been challenged by new technologies. This paper applies business school theories to examine how cardiothoracic surgeons might best respond to such "disruptive technologies". Otherwise well-managed business and industrial enterprises have had difficulty dealing with disruptive technological change because of well-recognized organizational impediments. Cardiothoracic surgeons must understand the characteristics of disruptive technologies and consider organizational changes that will allow the profession to better adapt to them

Stately Halls and Utilitarian Shacks: A History of the Buildings of Ouachita Baptist University

    Get PDF
When you step onto the campus of Ouachita Baptist University, you might stop to admire the lovely landscaping and trees lining 6th and Ouachita Street. You might appreciate the architectural beauty of Cone-Bottoms, once said to be the most beautiful residence hall in the South. The abundance of places to sit and relax such as the International Flag Plaza and Fountain, Daniel R. Grant Plaza, and the Katie Speer Pavilion and Gardens only embellish the peaceful atmosphere of the campus. The new state-of-the-art Hickingbotham Hall impresses with its computer labs, classrooms, and lecture halls. Although an essential part of the campus, the buildings consist of nothing more than bricks and mortar. However, the brick and mortar of those buildings come to life when the stories of the people who learned and taught within those walls are shared. The students and professors of Ouachita help give the campus its unique atmosphere. Their stories belong in the history of Ouachita Baptist University as much as the historic timeline of the school does

It wasn’t my favorite one that’s for sure. So I was sleeping. Uh I can’t remember when it was. I was young. This was back in the day. I was probably like--I don’t know-- seven or eight or something. I was sleeping and I sleep--I used to sleep with my door open for the longest time and the fan was on. And I was I was asleep and everything’s fine and then then--I guess I guess that’s what woke me up. All the sud--like I heard like a FOO FOO FOO you know? I was like what the heck is that. My eyes like slowly opened I just see something moving like crazy fast and my eyes popped open wide and my door’s just going mock 90 op--like full open all the way to like full close. Full open full close. Like--like I’m telling you mock 90 that thing was going ham DODODODODODODO[imitating door slamming open and shut]Like like someone was like standing there like--like the same speed if someone was standing there doing it manually or whatever but I didn’t see anyone. So I like ran through the door and ran straight to Mom’s room. That was the scariest one. And then she just said it was my fan, you know, the airflow the fan in the house the house fan all that bullcrap whatever. And it got me to bed but now I think about it bullcrap was that a fan. I don’t know what fan could make a door do that. That’s for sure. That was Scare-ey

Easier Parallel Programming with Provably-Efficient Runtime Schedulers

    Get PDF
Over the past decade processor manufacturers have pivoted from increasing uniprocessor performance to multicore architectures. However, utilizing this computational power has proved challenging for software developers. Many concurrency platforms and languages have emerged to address parallel programming challenges, yet writing correct and performant parallel code retains a reputation of being one of the hardest tasks a programmer can undertake. This dissertation will study how runtime scheduling systems can be used to make parallel programming easier. We address the difficulty in writing parallel data structures, automatically finding shared memory bugs, and reproducing non-deterministic synchronization bugs. Each of the systems presented depends on a novel runtime system which provides strong theoretical performance guarantees and performs well in practice

    Physical Model of Cilia Motion

    Get PDF
The motion of cilia could be further understood by creating and analysing a large scale model with similar stiffness and property values. Varying amounts of vibrating HEXBUG robots, representing motion and active particles, were placed in series with different segment lengths connecting them. The oscillating motion of a ciliium was able to be replicated and analyzed using autotracing and autotracking programs. The amplitude of the model increased with increasing length, while increasing length had an inconclusive effect on period. Furthermore, the visual path of a marked end segment repeated with each oscillation recorded

    Seeing Grandma

So apparently Michael and I were going to go hunting. I thought I had talked to Grandma about dropping you off. Do you remember? A-Yeah I remember. L-Do you remember if we talked to her? A-I think we did. L-I thought so too. So anyways apparently we went on the quad--we loaded you guys on on the quad and headed down there because we were going out to hunt by the river and I thought we saw Grandma waiting in the window...I swear I saw Grandma and Grandpa. Grandma for sure. And so you guys went in the house-- A-No it was locked. We couldn’t even go in the house. (It was locked?) A-Yeah all the doors were locked. (You didn’t…) L-Didn’t we leave you there because we thought we saw them? A-Yeah you abandoned us. L-[Laughter] Okay. So what ended up happening after that? A-I don’t remember. I think we waited until Grandma and Grandpa finally pulled up. L-[Laughter] Oh. I would swear that we saw them. There. A-Yeah well we saw--I think we all saw Grandma standing clearly in the window. L-Yes… A-But no one was home. L-That was weird. Plus I would swear we had talked to her and she knew you were coming so that was just really weird
