    Towards Exascale Scientific Metadata Management

    Advances in technology and computing hardware are enabling scientists from all areas of science to produce massive amounts of data using large-scale simulations or observational facilities. In this era of data deluge, effective coordination between the data production and the analysis phases hinges on the availability of metadata that describe the scientific datasets. Existing workflow engines have been capturing a limited form of metadata to provide provenance information about the identity and lineage of the data. However, much of the data produced by simulations, experiments, and analyses still need to be annotated manually in an ad hoc manner by domain scientists. Systematic and transparent acquisition of rich metadata becomes a crucial prerequisite to sustain and accelerate the pace of scientific innovation. Yet, ubiquitous and domain-agnostic metadata management infrastructure that can meet the demands of extreme-scale science is notable by its absence. To address this gap in scientific data management research and practice, we present our vision for an integrated approach that (1) automatically captures and manipulates information-rich metadata while the data is being produced or analyzed and (2) stores metadata within each dataset to permeate metadata-oblivious processes and to query metadata through established and standardized data access interfaces. We motivate the need for the proposed integrated approach using applications from plasma physics, climate modeling and neuroscience, and then discuss research challenges and possible solutions

    FUNCTIONAL FORM SPECIFICATION IN THE QUARTERLY DEMAND FOR RED MEATS IN CANADA

    Most demand studies, particularly those for food products, choose somewhat arbitrarily either a linear or a log-linear functional form. Since choice of functional form has implications for elasticities and their properties over time, either form may be considered restrictive. An empirical test of functional form in the short-run (quarterly) demand for four red meats is presented in this paper. For beef demand, neither a linear nor a log-linear form is appropriate. Similarly for pork and lamb demand, a linear functional form is not appropriate, but the log-linear one is.     Study of non-equilibrium transport phenomena

    Nonequilibrium phenomena due to real gas effects are very important features of low density hypersonic flows. The shock shape and emitted nonequilibrium radiation are identified as the bulk flow behavior parameters which are very sensitive to the nonequilibrium phenomena. These parameters can be measured in shock tubes, shock tunnels, and ballistic ranges and used to test the accuracy of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) codes. Since the CDF codes, by necessity, are based on multi-temperature models, it is also desirable to measure various temperatures, most importantly, the vibrational temperature. The CFD codes would require high temperature rate constants, which are not available at present. Experiments conducted at the NASA Electric Arc-driven Shock Tube (EAST) facility reveal that radiation from steel contaminants overwhelm the radiation from the test gas. For the measurement of radiation and the chemical parameters, further investigation and then appropriate modifications of the EAST facility are required

    A Plethora of Strange Nonchaotic Attractors

    We show that it is possible to devise a large class of skew--product dynamical systems which have strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs): the dynamics is asymptotically on fractal attractors and the largest Lyapunov exponent is nonpositive.     International Mobility of Highly-Qualified People in APEC

    An important aspect of the global knowledge-based economy is the emergence of a new trend where certain groups of highly-qualified workers have become increasingly mobile internationally. Reaching the goal of being more innovative economy requires that the highly-qualified workforce is of sufficient quantity and quality to support the expansion of innovative activities by firms. Many industrialized countries compete strategically in attracting these workers. It is necessary that the economic policy discussion surrounding the international mobility of skilled labour must take into consideration the wide variety of ways the migration of labour affects the economy. Numerous drivers, policy and non-policy induced, are at work. Attention must now turn towards the links between these movements and the regulating institutions; the performance in the trade of goods and services, FDI, human capital formation and multinational enterprises location, and income convergence among countries. This paper focuses on four key issues: First, it examines the global trends in the international migratory flows of highly qualified persons (HQPs), focusing on APEC economies. Second, it discusses the fundamental non-policy drivers of the increased HQP flows in the new global economy. Third, it reviews the literature on the economic costs and benefits associated with cross-country movement of HQPs and the main factors conditioning these costs and benefits.     Simple Text Mining for Sentiment Analysis of Political Figure Using Naive Bayes Classifier Method

    Text mining can be applied to many fields. One of the application is using text mining in digital newspaper to do politic sentiment analysis. In this paper sentiment analysis is applied to get information from digital news articles about its positive or negative sentiment regarding particular politician. This paper suggests a simple model to analyze digital newspaper sentiment polarity using naive Bayes classifier method. The model uses a set of initial data to begin with which will be updated when new information appears. The model showed promising result when tested and can be implemented to some other sentiment analysis problems.Comment: 5 pages, published in the Proceedings of the 7th ICT

    Conservative finite volume solutions of a linear hyperbolic transport equation in two and three dimensions using multiple grids

    The feasibility of the multiple grid technique is investigated by solving linear hyperbolic equations for simple two- and three-dimensional cases. The results are compared with exact solutions and those obtained from the single grid calculations. It is demonstrated that the technique works reasonably well when two grid systems contain grid cells of comparative sizes. The study indicates that use of the multiple grid does not introduce any significant error and that it can be used to attack more complex problems
