Potential approaches to the spectroscopic characterization of high performance polymers exposed to energetic protons and heavy ions

    Get PDF
A potential limitation to human activity on the lunar surface or in deep space is the exposure of the crew to unacceptably high levels of penetrating space radiations. The radiations of most concerns for such missions are high-energy protons emitted during solar flares, and galactic cosmic rays which are high-energy ions ranging from protons to iron. The development of materials for effective shielding from energetic space radiations will clearly require a greater understanding of the underlying mechanisms of radiation-induced damage in bulk materials. This can be accomplished in part by the detailed spectroscopic characterization of bulk materials that were exposed to simulated space radiations. An experimental data base thus created can then be used in conjunction with existing radiation transport codes in the design and fabrication of effective radiation shielding materials. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy was proven very useful in elucidating radiation effects in polymers (high performance polymers are often an important components of structural composites)

This paper explained about a using of Boiler Water Treatment (BWT) as corrosion protection for boiler on ship. BWT used as addition on boiler water, which used destilat water. As experiment results, BWT used on destilat water and destilat - seawater mixed given not koagulan patch on. The simulation given not satisfied results, caused by good not equipment

Effective Approaches With Young Adults: A Guide for Probation Services

    Get PDF
The aim of this guide is to give probation practitioners, whether in the National Probation Service or Community Rehabilitation Companies, the tools to deliver a more effective approach to young adults. It provides practical suggestions for effective ways to engage young adults and support their desistance from crime. It also includes suggestions for managers on what they can do to enable practitioners to improve outcomes within probation services

The outsourcing of household tasks and labour contract in domestic work

    Get PDF
This paper empirically illustrates that flexible work arrangements may be found unsuitable for outsourcing certain household tasks. For this purpose we analyse the relationship between tasks performed by domestic workers and the nature of the labour contract. Our study draws on a dataset from a sample of Portuguese domestic workers, and uses a fuzzy clustering approach to identify bundles of tasks together with contract features. The results achieved suggest a segmentation of domestic workers into four groups: two comprising carers, who enjoy a standard type of contract, and another two groups of cleaners with flexible and informal work arrangements. However, there is no distinct boundary between these groups. The overlapping that occurs between tasks and contracts justifies the use of the fuzzy approach to data analysis.FC

The objective of this research is to find out the difficulties in learning English at the first semester students of Islamic Education Study Program of State Islamic University of Datokarama Palu. This is a qualitative research applying an interview as the instrument. The research question is “What are the difficulties in learning English at the first semester students of Islamic Education Study Program of State Islamic University of Datokarama Palu?” The respondents are twenty six first semester students of Islamic Education Study Program of State Islamic University of Datokarama Palu. Through the interview, the researchers discovered four difficulties the respondents shared related to learning English. The first is pronunciation. They find it hard to guess the pronunciation of some English words that they read as well as to pronounce the words correctly. The second one is the writing of English. Even if they already know the pronunciation, they still find it troublesome to write English since the writing is different from the pronunciation. The next difficulty is the grammar. Although the materials of English at schools have included many parts of grammar, they still find it tough to construct grammatical correct sentences when they already become university students. The last thing that becomes their difficulty is limited vocabulary that leads them to the problem in developing productive skill such as constructing sentences and receptive skill such as listening to English conversatio

Employers’ perception of the role of higher education in Portugal: The varying solutions for skill problems

    Get PDF
Higher education is under great pressure to provide skills that smooth graduates’ transition into the labour market, prepare them for the world of work and, ultimately, contribute to their employability. This supply-side perspective does not, per se, reflect employers’ view of the mission of higher education. Our research provides empirical evidence on how employers in Portugal perceive the role of higher education. It relies on data gathered in 2020 through an original online survey applied to N = 162 employers in Portugal. A k-means clustering distinguishes three groups of employers: those that acknowledge the autonomy of higher education; those who prefer to train their workforce; and those that blame higher education for their skill problems. The latter employers report skill shortages and propose different answers to mitigate them. Ultimately, the findings indicate that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for skill problems; firms have agency in finding appropriate solutions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Social media platform has become one of the main attributes for teaching and learning. One of those digital platforms widely used is YouTube. YouTube functions not only as a social media for interacting with the world, but also as a teaching media for delivering material. This research is conducted to gain more information related to the use of YouTube in teaching and learning. The research question was, “How was the use of YouTube in delivering English class to the first semester students of Islamic Education Management Study Program at Datokarama State Islamic University Palu?” This is a case study in qualitative research. The instruments applied in this research were observation which was conducted as many as six meetings and an interview with eight questions to thirteen first semester students of Islamic Education Management Study Program at Datokarama State Islamic University Palu. The result of this research showed the point of view from the lecturers and the students related to the research question. The lecturers viewed YouTube as one of solutions for solving the problem of delivering distance learning. Explaining material of English via YouTube can be seriously challenging. The lecturers should perform well in front of the camera while delivering the material. From the students’ point of view, YouTube helped them understand the explanation of English material easily. They did not have to download videos and save them in the phone memory. They only needed to click the link and watch the videos in YouTube

Parents’ and carers’ experiences of transition and aftercare following a child's discharge from a paediatric intensive care unit to an in-patient ward setting:A qualitative systematic review

    Get PDF
Objectives: To explore parents’ experiences of transition and aftercare following their child’s discharge from a pediatric intensive care unit to an inpatient ward. Methods: A qualitative systematic review was conducted. Electronic databases CINAHL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Psych INFO, and ASSIA were searched for qualitative studies with no date limits imposed. Methodological quality was assessed using the JBI QARI standardised critical appraisal instrument. Data were extracted into a standardised data extraction tool. Findings were pooled using a meta-aggregative approach. Results: Four studies were included in the final review that included a total of 95 participants. Fortynine findings were extracted and through an iterative process resulting in four synthesised findings being developed. These included: (1) Dynamic emotional response pre, peri and post-transfer; (2) Involvement in care absent but fundamental to functioning; (3) Changes in care delivery and environment provoking adverse emotions; and (4) Transition as a physical, emotional and social balancing act. Conclusion: Transitioning from the pediatric intensive care unit to an in-patient ward can be a challenging time for parents, exposing them to a turbulent emotional and social status, and depleting their personal resources. Parents are aware of differences in the organisation and delivery of care between clinical areas which can compound the adversity experienced. Health professionals need to provide targeted support in order to mitigate these negative emotional, physical and social effects experienced

Strategic Directions for Developing an Islamic Banking System

    Get PDF
It is proposed that Islamic banking does not merely imply the interest-free banking system; rather, it is the banking in consonance with the ethos and value system of Islam and governed by the principles and rules laid down by Islamic Shariah. The question arises as to why the Islamic financing system has not been fully realised in Pakistan. And what directions should the Government take for establishing a sustainable Islamic banking system? The study is conducted according to the strategic management approach, exploring a practical route for developing growth-oriented Islamic banking system in Pakistan. Critical questions are raised to analyse the dynamics of Islamic banks in Pakistan. Then using a questionnaire, senior bankers are interviewed to add their insight. The study finally recommends strategic directions for developing a growth-oriented Islamic banking system in the country.
