    Improving stress coping ability: comparison between the CYP17 genotype Of Ovis Aries and Capra Hircus

    The ability of animals to adapt to stress is not only an animal health and welfare concern, but also influences reproduction potential and robustness. An important pathway involved in the stress response is the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPAA) that results in the release of cortisol from the adrenal gland. In this study the cortisol responses of South African Merinos were measured to assess HPAA responsiveness to stress and relate it to behavioural stress responses to flock-isolation. The experiment was structured according to a 2Ă—2 statistical design, with CYP17 genotype (WT1/WT1 vs. WT1/WT2) and selection line (H-line vs. L-line) as factors. Selection line criteria was based on divergent selection for (H-line) or against (L-line) maternal multiple rearing ability, where the H-line generally outperformed the L-line in terms of reproduction, animal welfare and resistance to certain pathogens. The CYP17 genotype is involved in the biosynthesis pathway of cortisol. In the present study the CYP17 genotype showed a significant influence on behavioural stress responses, where three parameters of the flock-isolation test were affected (P<0.05), namely the number of bleats uttered, the urinating frequency and the average distance from a human operator. It is suggested that the CYP17 genotype affects behavioural responses via its effects on cortisol production, and that the SNPs located within the CYP17 genotype may have application in marker-assisted selection of sheep

    The role of Cytochrome P450 17-alpha-Hydroxylase/ 17,20-Lyase (CYP17) in the stress coping ability in a divergently selected Merino sheep population

    South African Merino sheep were selected divergently from the same base population for their ability to rear multiples. Two distinct populations were formed over a period of more than 20 years of selection. Reproduction (and therefore presumably fitness) in the line selected in the upward direction (H-line) was substantially improved compared to the line selected in the downward direction (L-line). In the present study, it was demonstrated that the H-line was more stresstolerant than the L-line in terms of their glucose and cortisol response when challenged with insulin. Sheep from the breeding program were genotyped according to one of two cytochrome P450 17α-hydroxylase/17-20 lyase (CYP17) alleles, as these genotypes were previously linked to the ability of Angora goats to cope with external stressors. However, no association was found between CYP17 genotype and selection line. The difference in insulin induced stress response between the H- and the L-line can therefore not be attributed to CYP17 genotype

    Studies of cophylogeny (the mirroring of the evolutionary histories of two independent species) lies at the interface of ecology and evolution and therefore is inherently interesting to biologists. The actual mechanisms that lead to patterns cophylogeny are poorly understood. Chewing lice (Trichodectidae) and pocket gophers (Geomyidae) are a model system for the study of cophylogeny. The question to be addressed in this study centers around the fine-scale interactions between pocket gophers and chewing lice in the Southwest United States and whether different louse species actually hybridize within a zone of potential contact. DNA microsatellite techniques, DNA sequencing, PCR, and gel electrophoresis were used to test this question. Based on the results of extensive testing, the evidence indicated hybridization between the two louse species examined. Furthermore, this hybridization was detected on a single host. These conclusions provide valuable insight for future endeavors and furthering the understanding of cophylogeny

    Any theory of electrical conduction in TFRs encounters mainly two problems: (i) explanation of the dependence of Râ–ˇ on properties of conducting component (volume fraction, grain size, resistivity), (ii) explanation of the temperature dependence of Râ–ˇ taking into account (i). In order to achieve this one has to fit some microscopic parameters to experimental Râ–ˇ-and TCR-values, and to check if they are reasonable or not. The aim of the following discussion is to show, that such a fitting by means of experimental TCR-values is not correct. This is due to the fact that TCR-behaviour, as is well known, is determined also by the dependence of resistivity on strain. But any theoretical model neglects strains, also those who are induced by thermal strains. By means of published experiments concerning the strain dependence of resistance, the magnitude is estimated by which the TCR-values have to be corrected for the described fit

    Real-time processing of indexical and generic expressions: Insights from, and implications for, COVID-related public health messages

    We used COVID-related health messages to investigate the incremental processing of expressions such as you, we and people in generic contexts, to further our understanding of how these kinds of expressions are processed in real-time and to explore whether the ease of comprehending public health messages related to the COVID pandemic is influenced by type of referring expression. Results from a self-paced reading study point to an increased processing load in messages with the non-indexical form people (relative to we and you), which we suggest is separable from effects of word length and frequency. We interpret this as preliminary support for the Indexicality Hypothesis, which posits that expressions which can in principle receive indexical interpretations are easier to process than non-indexicals, and also emphasize the need for further work on these kinds of questions

    Don\u27t Look Down: Emotional Arousal Elevates Height Perception

    In a series of experiments, it was found that emotional arousal can influence height perception. In Experiment 1, participants viewed either arousing or nonarousing images before estimating the height of a 2-story balcony and the size of a target on the ground below the balcony. People who viewed arousing images overestimated height and target size more than did those who viewed nonarousing images. However, in Experiment 2, estimates of horizontal distances were not influenced by emotional arousal. In Experiment 3, both valence and arousal cues were manipulated, and it was found that arousal, but not valence, moderated height perception. In Experiment 4, participants either up-regulated or down-regulated their emotional experience while viewing emotionally arousing images, and a control group simply viewed the arousing images. Those participants who up-regulated their emotional experience overestimated height more than did the control or down-regulated participants. In sum, emotional arousal influences estimates of height, and this influence can be moderated by emotion regulation strategies

    Sedation for paediatric auditory electrophysiology in South Africa

    Background: The sedation of children in the medical and allied professional fields has been a topic of controversy and debate internationally. Limited information is available on the use of sedation for auditory electrophysiology testing in South Africa.Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine how sedation information is recorded in electrophysiology audiology reports where diagnostic electrophysiology testing was used, and to obtain baseline information on sedation procedures and medications used during diagnostic electrophysiology testing.Methods: Audiology reports of 169 children undergoing auditory electrophysiology testing were reviewed for sedation information.Conclusion: Sedation data is not clearly documented and the use of medical or anaesthetist monitoring during sedation is not routinely included in reports. Sedation medication is varied and does not always include medications listed as safe for use with the paediatric population. This places doubt on procedures and protocols as well as the safety mechanisms in place for auditory diagnostic testing of children in South Africa.Keywords: auditory electrophysiology, diagnostic audiology, sedatio
