The Impact of Devolution on Organizational Effectiveness: An Exploratory Case Study of Faith-Based Child Care

Although the foundations of President Bush’s faith-based initiative could be traced back at least to Colonial times, the re-packaging of this idea has raised concerns about the role of the federal government in the affairs of faith based organizations, the professionalization of social services, rent seeking, and the crowding out of private funding. This paper aims to examine the local implications of decentralizing the provision of social services in Lee County, Florida. More specifically, we will identify how devolution has affected the organizational effectiveness of faith-based organizations in the day care sector. For this paper, organizational effectiveness was defined in terms of goal setting, efficient use of resources, and reputation. This initial exploratory study suggests that any devolutionary policy that aims to aggressively include faith-based organizations in the provision of social services will face the challenge of weak information flow mechanisms within the industry

De cómo las artes y los artistas dan nuevas luces al campo de revivificación urbana

Este ensayo explora los aspectos económicos, políticos y artísticos del proceso de revivificación de Miami Beach. Cinco áreas serán analizadas: Razones culturales y de revivificación, fondos, interacción política, definición y descripción del producto creado por las artes y los artistas y pronóstico. Para ello, se presenta un breve esquema del campo de las artes, la economía y el desarrollo urbano; se plantean los diferentes modelos disponibles para analizar los eventos que se están llevando a cabo en Miami Beach y se propondrá el más indicado. Por último, se describirán estos eventos, se analizarán sus resultados y se presentaran conclusiones y se plantearan estudios futuros

Transcranial ultrasound simulation with uncertainty estimation

Transcranial ultrasound simulations are increasingly used to predict in situ exposure parameters for ultrasound therapies in the brain. However, there can be considerable uncertainty in estimating the acoustic medium properties of the skull and brain from computed tomography (CT) images. This paper shows how the resulting uncertainty in the simulated acoustic field can be predicted in a computationally efficient way using linear uncertainty propagation. Results for a representative transcranial simulation using a focused bowl transducer at 500 kHz show good agreement with unbiased uncertainty estimates obtained using Monte Carlo

The present study aims to focus the comparative criminal procedure in the light of the well known expression of “legal transplants”. In this meaning here is said, at a first moment, about the actual stage of the science of comparative law. After that follow the possible critical aspects which can be remembered in countries of Latin America, including Brazil. At the end, with eyes at criminal procedure and authors who had shared attention to the theme of comparative criminal procedure, it is assumed a critical position related to the scenario of some legal reforms in the ongoing Brazilian criminal procedure

j-Wave: An open-source differentiable wave simulator

We present an open-source differentiable acoustic simulator, j-Wave, which can solve time-varying and time-harmonic acoustic problems. It supports automatic differentiation, which is a program transformation technique that has many applications, especially in machine learning and scientific computing. j-Wave is composed of modular components that can be easily customized and reused. At the same time, it is compatible with some of the most popular machine learning libraries, such as JAX and TensorFlow. The accuracy of the simulation results for known configurations is evaluated against the widely used k-Wave toolbox and a cohort of acoustic simulation software. j-Wave is available from https://github.com/ucl-bug/jwave

RIO+20 – CONFERÊNCIA DAS NAÇÕES UNIDAS SOBRE MEIO AMBIENTE E DESENVOLVIMENTO: CONTEXTO, PRINCIPAIS TEMAS E EXPECTATIVAS EM RELAÇÃO AO NOVO “DIREITO DA SUSTENTABILIDADE”

O presente trabalho busca analisar, numa perspectiva teórico e prática, qual o contexto, os principais temas, as inovações em matéria de direito e política ambiental e o que podemos esperar desta importante conferência a se realizar no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, em junho de 2012. Para tanto, o artigo está dividido em quatro momentos: 1- contexto desta conferência e o histórico do debate em torno de meio ambiente e desenvolvimento, 2-análise das grandes propostas da conferência, com destaque para o debate sobre a governança ambiental global e sua institucionalidade e economia verde, 3- refl exão sobre grandes inovações críticas ocorridas nas últimas duas décadas (entre a Rio 92 e a Rio+20), 4- propostas do novo direito da sustentabilidade, pautado pelos princípios da justiça ambiental e do socioambientalismo. O método de pesquisa adotado foi o bibliográfi co documental. Procurou-se também efetuar uma análise procedimental indutiva, discutindo e aprofundando pontos críticos do processo envolvidos na Conferência Rio+20. Como resultado, procurou-se trazer mais informações sobre a conferência e os seus principais temas e as suas problemáticas, acentuando os pontos emergentes e as potenciais lacunas do processo. Trata-se de uma pesquisa com fi ns acadêmico-teóricos, bem como também tem a fi nalidade prática de fomentar a análise crítica e permitir uma maior familiaridade dos pesquisadores em diversas áreas do conhecimento, com interesse na construção da sustentabilidade e no debate sobre o modelo de desenvolvimento que possa fazer frente aos cada vez maiores desafi os sociais e ambientais em nossos tempos.
