A study of the cluster novel as a development in contemporary fiction

    Get PDF
By 1929 and 1930 the popularity and the increasing use of the cluster form caught the attention of most careful readers of fiction. Its original adaptations, its unique technique, its clever appropriation of the best in the novel and in the short story forms, its use by leading novelists, its suggested similarity to age-old literary methods, and it\u27s very apparent possibilities - all these make it a subject worthy of some detailed study. It shall be the aim in this discussion to search out the very early traces of fictional forms similar to the cluster type, to attempt to account for the present form of the cluster by comparing its technique and form with that of the short story and the conventional novel, to enumerate and analyze modern works of fiction with cluster tendencies, to discuss the characteristic features of the contemporary cluster novel, and to attempt a summary as to the permanence and possibilities of this new type

Studies in South African infant growth, illustrated by comparative analyses of groups of European, Coloured, Bantu and Indian babies from birth to one year

There are four main ethnic groups in South Africa- European, Coloured, Bantu and Indian. Each differs widely from the other in socio-economic status and cultural background. This being so it seems to me that in South Africa one has a unique opportunity for doing comparative research. For many years i have been interested in health rather than in disease, and growth in infancy is, I think, a good index of health. I believe that an examination of the growth pattern of infants from birth to one year gives one a good idea of the health and standard of living of a population in general and of its infants in particular

Estimates of the prevalence of psychological difficulties, such as depression, anxiety, and poor quality of life, are high among individuals diagnosed with cancer. Problem-solving therapy (PST), a cognitive and behavioral intervention, is one major approach that has been applied and evaluated as a means of positively impacting on such problems. PST trains individuals in a series of skills that helps them cope more effectively with life stressors, such as those associated with cancer and its treatment. This paper provides a brief overview of the research supporting its efficacy, as well as clinical guidelines.

Theory of mind enables humans to attribute mental states to themselves and others. Numerous studies have been devoted to the localization of brain regions associated with theory of mind abilities. This kind of correlation can also be seen in studies which examine theory of mind deficits in mental disorders. This thesis deals with the differentiation of affective and cognitive theory of mind-dimensions. Based on theoretical assumptions, participants were put in either a positive or negative mood to enhance different processing styles. By influencing participants' mood, this thesis measures differences between cognitive and affective theory of mind performance. Measurements were taken using an affective theory of mind test, "Reading Mind In The Eyes" Test of Baron-Cohen (2001), and a cognitive theory of mind test consisting of ToM stories tasks by Willinger, Schmöger, Muller and Auff (2011). In addition, gender differences are a factor in the investigation, since they could enhance the differentiation of affective and cognitive theory of mind-dimensions. As a result, this study suggests a differentiation of affective and cognitive theory of mind-dimensions. Gender differences in affective and cognitive theory of mind-performance could not be statistically proven
