Management of Virtual Machines on Globus Grids Using GridWay

Virtual machines are a promising technology to over-come some of the problems found in current Grid infras-tructures, like heterogeneity, performance partitioning or application isolation. In this work, we present an straight-forward deployment of virtual machines in Globus Grids. This solution is based on standard services and does not re-quire additional middleware to be installed. Also, we assess the suitability of this deployment in the execution of a high throughput scientific application, the XMM-Newton Scien-tific Analysis System

Special thanks to all the women who participated in this study and the Sport Area of Málaga Provincial Government, Diputación de Málaga (Spain). The results of this study derive from the doctoral thesis of Pedro Jesús Ruiz- Montero with older adults from Málaga province.Active aging is aimed at promoting quality of life in older adults. Nevertheless, the relationship between physical role and the practice of physical activity (PA) can be influenced by bodily pain feeling and by a low level of health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Passive and active strategies are susceptible to being modified and constitute an important psychological predictor of adaptation to pain. This cross-sectional study (1) analyzed the differences between inactive/active older adult women in terms of clinical and sociodemographic characteristics, pain coping strategies, and HRQoL; (2) studied the associations between pain coping strategies, the dimensions of the HRQoL questionnaire, and physical role; and (3) determined if passive strategies, bodily pain, physical function, and general health were significant mediators in the link between being inactive/active and physical role. Methods. Participants of the present cross-sectional study completed measures of clinical and sociodemographic characteristics, HRQoL using the Short-Form Health Survey-36, and active and passive strategies using the Vanderbilt Pain Management Inventory (VPMI). Results. A total of 157 inactive (69:9 ± 7:1 years) and 183 active (68:8 ± 5:3 years) women from rural areas were included in the study. Both groups significantly differed in the majority of the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics measured, pain coping strategies, and HRQoL. Bodily pain, physical function, and general health predicted physical role. Moreover, passive strategies, bodily pain, physical function, and general health mediated the link between inactive/active participants and physical role. Conclusions. Being physically active or inactive contributes to a better understanding of the link between PA, pain coping strategies, and physical role in older women

There is evidence that perceived health status is relevant for older adults' wellbeing, and at the same time perceived health status can be influenced by self-perceptions of ageing. There is a lack of studies on the relationship between these variables. The aim of this study was to explore attitudes towards ageing and self-perceptions of ageing among Spanish middle-aged and older people, and to identify possible mediators in the relationship between self-perceptions of ageing on perceived health status. The sample comprised 1,124 individuals from 50 to 98 years old (mean = 64.84, standard deviation = 10.12) from the Ageing in Spain Longitudinal Study database, Pilot Survey (ELES-PS). Almost 70 per cent of the participants stated that old age begins at a specific chronological age and half of them considered that society treats older people with indifference. Self-perceptions of ageing, physical activity, cognitive functioning and age were significant predictors, and together these variables explained 15.9 per cent in the variance of perceived health status. The multiple mediation analysis revealed that self-perceptions of ageing predicted cognitive functioning (B = 0.848, p < 0.01) and physical activity (B = 2.9046, p < 0.001), and mediated the association between self-perceptions of ageing and perceived health status (B = 0.1144, standard error = 0.0147, p < 0.01). Results from this study highlight the importance of perceptions and attitudes towards ageing for older adults' health and wellbeing, thus this study contributes to a better understanding of how these variables are related. In this sense, results from this study can be useful for designing interventions for fostering wellbeing. Addressing negative self-perceptions of ageing and negative attitudes towards ageing can be particularly useful because they are associated with more pessimistic expectancies about the ageing process.Funding for open access charge: University of Granada.Programme of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (CSO2009-06637-E/SOCI; CSO2009-06638-E/SOCI; CSO2009-08645-E/SOCI)SAIOTEK 2009 Programme of the Basque GovernmentObra Social Caja Madrid Foundatio

Forced Oscillations in Fluid Tori and Quasi-Periodic Oscillations

The kilo-Hertz Quasi--Periodic Oscillations in X-ray binaries could originate within the accretion flow, and be a signature of non--linear fluid oscillations and mode coupling in strong gravity. The possibility to decipher these systems will impact our knowledge of fundamental parameters such as the neutron star mass, radius, and spin. Thus they offer the possibility to constrain the nuclear equation of state and the rotation parameter of stellar--mass black holes. We review the general properties of these oscillations from a hydrodynamical point of view, when the accretion flow is subject to external perturbations and summarize recent results.Comment: Astronomische Nachrichten, in pres

The consolidation of large Distributed Computing infrastructures has resulted in a High-Throughput Computing platform that is ready for high loads, whose best proponents are the current grid federations. On the other hand, Cloud Computing promises to be more flexible, usable, available and simple than Grid Computing, covering also much more computational needs than the ones required to carry out distributed calculations. In any case, because of the dynamism and heterogeneity that are present in grids and clouds, calculating the best match between computational tasks and resources in an effectively characterised infrastructure is, by definition, an NP-complete problem, and only sub-optimal solutions (schedules) can be found for these environments. Nevertheless, the characterisation of the resources of both kinds of infrastructures is far from being achieved. The available information systems do not provide accurate data about the status of the resources that can allow the advanced scheduling required by the different needs of distributed applications. The issue was not solved during the last decade for grids and the cloud infrastructures recently established have the same problem. In this framework, brokers only can improve the throughput of very long calculations, but do not provide estimations of their duration. Complex scheduling was traditionally tackled by other tools such as workflow managers, self-schedulers and the production management systems of certain research communities. Nevertheless, the low performance achieved by these earlybinding methods is noticeable. Moreover, the diversity of cloud providers and mainly, their lack of standardised programming interfaces and brokering tools to distribute the workload, hinder the massive portability of legacy applications to cloud environments...Depto. de Arquitectura de Computadores y AutomáticaFac. de InformáticaTRUEsubmitte
