Christian ideas, ideals, and themes are prevalent throughout pop culture made in the United States. In May the Force Be with You…And Also With You, Kent explores the ways in which Christian imagery, ritual, and beliefs find a home in one of the most iconic franchises of all time, Star Wars. Utilizing Durkheimian and Geertzian theory, Kent brings an anthropological lens to this study of religion, media, and the impact of their relationship on viewers

The geology of the northern part of North Arm Massif, Bay of Islands Ophiolite Complex, Newfoundland: with application to upper oceanic crust lithology, structure, and genesis

Detailed mapping (1:15,800) of the northern half of North Arm Massif shows the area to be underlain with a complete, although thin, ophiolite assemblage consisting, from top to base, of basalts, sheeted diabase dikes, isotropic and layered gabbroic rocks, layered ultramafic rocks and harzburgite tectonite. The assemblage represents a preserved piece of Cambrian oceanic crust analogous to present-day oceanic crust. Sheeted dikes and isotropic gabbros comprise the majority of the rocks exposed, with this sequence at present flat-lying to gently warped into open, upright but nonsystematic folds. Basalts occupy a shallow discontinuous N-S trending trough within the west-central part of the area. The remaining lithologies are exposed in lesser amounts along the western, eastern and northeastern edges of the surveyed area. Volcanics consist of pillowed lavas, massive flows and breccias plus intercalated red sediment, all crudely layered, with layer attitudes intersecting the lower horizon of the unit with large angles. Volcanics are fed by underlying diabase dikes, and grade into sheeted dikes by downward increase in numbers of dikes across a transition generally less than 50 m thick. The sheeted dikes unit consists entirely of multiple diabase dikes of 0.9 m mean thickness, subparallel throughout and trending NNW-SSE across the massif. The dike intrusion process includes a mode wherein several dikes each intrude the previous dikes, with the position of these very narrow, short term spreading axes episodically shifting within a wider but still narrow overall zone of intrusion and spreading. Dikes intersect the upper and lower contacts of the unit with mean angles of 60º and 75º respectively, and dip away from the spreading center, located to the west of the present position of the section on the basis of dikes attitudes and chill margin analysis. The sheeted dikes unit ranges between 400 and 600 m thick. An estimated 40% of the diabase shows extensive in situ fracturing in distinct zones subparallel to dikes trends. Major zones of fracturing extend downward into gabbro metamorphosed to foliated and lineated amphibolite. This fracturing is interpreted to reflect oceanic crustal fissuring and faulting. Sheeted diabase dikes grade downward into isotropic gabbro across a complex transition wherein numbers of dikes decrease downward with corresponding increase of thickness of intervening screens of gabbro, with complete transition commonly occurring over as little as several meters, and wherein gabbro locally intrudes and stopes overlying sheeted diabase. Largely homogeneous throughout, isotropic gabbros near the base of the dikes unit vary widely in texture and locally show extensive development of ductile shear zones. The lithology and igneous structure of the upper units of the ophiolite and the sense of tilting of the sheeted dikes suggest that upper oceanic crust, viewed as forming as a floating roof zone, or lid, to a spreading center magma chamber, behaves as a rigid beam and forms by accretion along a narrow central zone with subsequent subsidence and rotation away from the accretion axis as a consequence of loading of the lid by extrusives. Continued steady-state spreading of a lid forming in this manner generates a lid surface topography and structural morphology identical to that observed at present-day spreading centers and an internal structure which is consistent with that of ophiolites. The model indicates that the zone of dike intrusion and basalt extrusion is narrow and remains so with continual spreading. Because the model predicts a specific internal geometry of sheeted dike and volcanic layering attitudes, it can be tested against other detailed reconstructions of upper oceanic crustal structure as such attitudes would affect magnetics inclinations in oceanic crust

The debate about evidence based practice has been going on for over twenty years in Sweden without any real conclusion. The purpose of this study was with Bourdieu’s theory about culture production and a discourse analytic approach, highlight the arguments in the debate and the beliefs and assumptions about the evidence based practices on which they are based. The aim was also to investigate the reasons why evidence based practice has become one of the most debated subjects within the field of social work science and what conclusion about the deployment of the field of social work you can take from the debate. I’ve focused on symbolic capital and how the authors of the articles position them self in the field to legitimate their opinions. The empirical data consisted of articles from Socionomen, a Swedish magazine for social workers and scientists. In my analyze I identified two different positions in terms of how the authors of the articles recognized the potential in the evidence based practice, the critical- and the advocating position. The critical position consisted primarily of arguments that are based on a ontological- knowledge theoretical perspective concerning knowledge within the field of social work. Regarding the best way to help clients the critical position arguments are inspired by humanistic psychology and that the relationship between the client and the professional is the most important factor. The advocacy position consisted of arguments based on a pragmatic utility maximization view inspired by the new public management movement and the medical field. Regarding the best way to help clients the advocacy position argues that a combination of evidence based methods, the client’s knowledge and the professional’s experience. On the basis of Bourdieu’s theory I found that the advocacy position possesses more symbolic capital and legitimate positions than the critical position which increases its ideas chances to breed within the field and history

Renyi Entropy based Target Tracking in Mobile Sensor Networks

    Get PDF
This paper proposes an entropy based target tracking approach for mobile sensor networks. The proposed tracking algorithm runs a target state estimation stage and a motion control stage alternatively. A distributed particle filter is developed to estimate the target position in the first stage. This distributed particle filter does not require to transmit the weighted particles from one sensor node to another. Instead, a Gaussian mixture model is formulated to approximate the posterior distribution represented by the weighted particles via an EM algorithm. The EM algorithm is developed in a distributed form to compute the parameters of Gaussian mixture model via local communication, which leads to the distributed implementation of the particle filter. A flocking controller is developed to control the mobile sensor nodes to track the target in the second stage. The flocking control algorithm includes three components. Collision avoidance component is based on the design of a separation potential function. Alignment component is based on a consensus algorithm. Navigation component is based on the minimization of an quadratic Renyi entropy. The quadratic Renyi entropy of Gaussian mixture model has an analytical expression so that its optimization is feasible in mobile sensor networks. The proposed active tracking algorithm is tested in simulation. © 2011 IFAC
