AbstractA theorem on uniqueness of the complete norm topology for complete normed nonassociative algebras is proved. This theorem contains the well-known one by Johnson for associative Banach algebras and the recent analogous result by Aupetit for Banach-Jordan algebras

We prove unit-free versions of both the associative and the non-associative Vidav-Palmer theorems. Then these results are applied to prove a unit-free version of the Blecher-Ruan-Sinclair non-associative characterization of unital C∗C^*-algebras.Comment: 32 page

Empirical analysis of consumption in Mexico : determinants, beneficiaries and the effects of inequality

Mexico has lived through several episodes of economic and social unrest during the 1970s, 1980s, and the 1990s. Since then the country has embraced a free-trade agenda and has eventually established itself as a strong manufacturing centre. GDP per capita has kept growing almost steadily, and so has the level of consumption per capita. At the same time Mexico has experienced a modest reduction in income inequality. This piece of research was aimed at identifying the main determinants of consumption as well as to find out if the benefits of increased consumption have been distributed similarly among different groups of the Mexican society. Its main contribution is the decomposition of consumption by different cohorts of society—age cohorts, income deciles, regional trends, or consumption determinants—in order to evaluate how consumption has evolved in general and if significant sub-group differences exist. The empirical work presents the empirical analysis of time series data on consumption and different consumption determinants. The empirical evidence confirms the long-run equilibrium relationship between consumption, income, and wealth. The results indicate how income, the wealth components and the value-added output from the manufacturing sector have had a role in steering consumption over the past 57 years. The empirical analysis of pooled micro-level datasets found support to the consumption-puzzle postulate. Income distributional differences were found to exist in terms of the life cycle consumption profile. While the richer cohorts of the population have been able to reduce consumption before retirement age, the poorer deciles have not been able to afford to reduce consumption and increase savings until they have gone well into the later stages of the life cycle. The analysis of the pooled microeconomic dataset has found significant distributional differences associated with over time changes in income inequality. The cohorts of the population in the middle part of the distribution do benefit by increased consumption levels when inequality reduces. Given the way inequality has reduced in Mexico—reductions in returns from financial wealth for the richer cohorts—it came as a little surprise to find that inequality reductions have not benefitted households at both ends of the income distribution: the poorer most, nor the richer ones.Relevant for public policy is the fact that specific measures have to be put in place to help the poorer households as they reach retirement age when their consumption levels have been found to reduce drastically

This paper examines whether there is an association between participation of the international African students at the University of Arkansas in extracurricular activities (ECAs) and their grade point average (GPA). Additionally, the researcher seeks to discover how and why the international African students participate in ECAs. The researcher surveyed 59 full time African students at the University of Arkansas during the academic year 2017-2018. The participants were adult males and females pursuing bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees at the University of Arkansas. The researcher compared the reported quantity of ECA hours with the participant’s GPA as reported by the participant. The observed independent sample t-test’s results, with an α = .05, was insignificant, t(57) = 2.00, p = .72, concluding that there was no significant difference in GPA between the international African students (M = 3.56, SD = .42, n = 24) at the University of Arkansas who were most involved in ECAs and their less involved peers (M = 3.6, SD = .33, n = 35). Additionally, the researcher compared the GPAs of the participant who reported being involved in sports ECAs and their peers who reported being involved in non-sports ECAs. The observed independent sample t-test’s results, with an α = .05 was also insignificant, t(57) = 2.00, p = .14, concluding that there was no significant difference in GPA between the surveyed international African students (M = 3.49, SD = .45, n = 20) at the University of Arkansas who reported participating in sports ECAs and their peers (M = 3.64, SD = .31, n = 39) who reported participating in non-sports ECAs. Furthermore, 37% of the surveyed African students at the University participated in ECAs because they wanted to (1) help and have fun, (2) meet new people, and (3) exchange experiences

Treballs Finals de Grau d'Enginyeria Informàtica, Facultat de Matemàtiques, Universitat de Barcelona, Any: 2022, Director: Mireia Ribera i Rubén Alcaraz Martínez[en] The general purpose of this project is to offer a tool to manage heuristic evaluation processes of graphics made by different evaluators. The technologies used for the implementation and production of a web application with data persistence have been the Flask framework of the Python library in the backend and SQLAlchemy in the database. Vue framework , NPM package manager, Webpack module bundler and Html5 and CSS3 languages have been used for the implementation of the frontend. The result has been a web application that allows the evaluating user to evaluate a graph by individually scoring each heuristic, as well as adding qualitative feedback. The coordinator user can create heuristic sets with total flexibility, as well as view, download the results or consult statistics of heuristic evaluations carried out by evaluators
