A Validation Framework for the Long Term Preservation of High Energy Physics Data

The study group on data preservation in high energy physics, DPHEP, is moving to a new collaboration structure, which will focus on the implementation of preservation projects, such as those described in the group's large scale report published in 2012. One such project is the development of a validation framework, which checks the compatibility of evolving computing environments and technologies with the experiments software for as long as possible, with the aim of substantially extending the lifetime of the analysis software, and hence of the usability of the data. The framework is designed to automatically test and validate the software and data of an experiment against changes and upgrades to the computing environment, as well as changes to the experiment software itself. Technically, this is realised using a framework capable of hosting a number of virtual machine images, built with different configurations of operating systems and the relevant software, including any necessary external dependencies.Comment: Proceedings of a poster presented at CHEP 2013, Amsterdam, October 14-18 201

Production of Gas Phase Zinc Oxide Nanoclusters by Pulsed Laser Ablation

We present experimental results on the photoluminescence (PL) of gas-suspended zinc oxide nanoclusters prepared during ablation of sintered ZnO targets by a pulsed ArF laser in the presence of oxygen ambient gas. The PL spectra in the UV spectral region correspond to the exciton recombination in the nanoclusters which are crystallized and cooled down to the temperature of the ambient gas in the ablation chamber. The time evolution of the spectra as well as their dependence on the ambient gas pressure are discussed.Comment: EMRS-2004, Strasbourg, France. Paper N-I.

Cluster emission under femtosecond laser ablation of silicon

Rich populations of clusters have been observed after femtosecond laser ablation of bulk silicon in vacuum. Size and velocity distributions of the clusters as well as their charge states have been analyzed by reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometry. An efficient emission of both neutral silicon clusters Sin (up to n = 6) and their cations Sin+ (up to n = 10) has been observed. The clusters are formed even at very low laser fluences, below ablation threshold, and their relative yield increases with fluence. We show the dependencies of the cluster yield as well as the expansion dynamics on both laser wavelength and laser fluence. The mechanisms of the cluster formation are discussed

    Audio style transfer

'Style transfer' among images has recently emerged as a very active research topic, fuelled by the power of convolution neural networks (CNNs), and has become fast a very popular technology in social media. This paper investigates the analogous problem in the audio domain: How to transfer the style of a reference audio signal to a target audio content? We propose a flexible framework for the task, which uses a sound texture model to extract statistics characterizing the reference audio style, followed by an optimization-based audio texture synthesis to modify the target content. In contrast to mainstream optimization-based visual transfer method, the proposed process is initialized by the target content instead of random noise and the optimized loss is only about texture, not structure. These differences proved key for audio style transfer in our experiments. In order to extract features of interest, we investigate different architectures, whether pre-trained on other tasks, as done in image style transfer, or engineered based on the human auditory system. Experimental results on different types of audio signal confirm the potential of the proposed approach.Comment: ICASSP 2018 - 2018 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP), Apr 2018, Calgary, France. Electronic mechanism of ion expulsion under UV nanosecond laser excitation of silicon: Experiment and modeling

We present experimental and modeling studies of UV nanosecond pulsed laser desorption and ablation of (111) bulk silicon. The results involve a new approach to the analysis of plume formation dynamics under high-energy photon irradiation of the semiconductor surface. Non-thermal, photo-induced desorption has been observed at low laser fluence, well below the melting threshold. Under ablation conditions, the non-thermal ions have also a high concentration. The origin of these ions is discussed on the basis of electronic excitation of Si surface states associated with the Coulomb explosion mechanism. We present a model describing dynamics of silicon target excitation, heating and harge-carrier transport

The primary types (holotypes, lectotypes, and syntypes) of the Diptera family Scathophagidae housed in the Museum für Naturkunde der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Senckenberg Deutsches Entomologisches Institut, Müncheberg, both in Germany, are revised. 50 species of Scathophagidae are enumerated. The species are listed alphabetically, and the account concludes with a systematic nomenclatural summary. Detailed information is given on the specimens, their labelling and their condition. 28 lectotypes are designated [Acanthocnema latipennis Becker, 1894 (Poland); Amaurosoma articulata Becker, 1894 (Poland); Amaurosoma inermis Becker, 1894 (Latvia or Estonia); Amaurosoma minuta Becker, 1894 (Latvia or Estonia); Amaurosoma nigrifrontata Becker, 1894 (Italy); Amaurosoma nutans Becker, 1894 (Poland); Cochliarium castanipes Becker, 1894 (Switzerland); Cochliarium lasiostoma Becker, 1894 (Switzerland); Cordylura aberrans Becker, 1894 (Sweden); Cordylura bezzii Sack, 1937 (Italy); Cordylura biseta Loew, 1864 (Denmark or Germany); Cordylura dasyprocta Loew, 1864 (Sweden); Cordylura femoralis Loew, 1864 (Austria); Cordylura glaucescens Loew, 1864 (Germany); Cordylura melaleuca Loew, 1873 (Greece); Cordylura melanacra Loew, 1873 (Poland); Cordylura nigriventris Loew, 1864 (Poland); Cordylura opaca Loew, 1864 (Austria); Cordylura picticornis Loew, 1864 (Russia); Cordylura umbrosa Loew, 1873 (Slovakia); Cordylura unicolor Loew, 1864 (Spain); Parallelomma longicornis Hendel, 1913 (Taiwan); Parallelomma media Becker, 1894 (Poland); Pselaphephila loewi Becker, 1894 (Poland); Scatophaga dasythrix Becker, 1894 (Russia); Scatophaga islandica Becker, 1894 (Iceland); Scatophaga mollis Becker, 1894 (Russia); Scatophaga ordinata Becker, 1894 (Switzerland)]. Three new synonyms are established: Amaurosoma nigrifrontata Becker, 1894 is a new junior synonym of Nanna tibiella (Zetterstedt, 1838); Cordylura rubifrontata Becker, 1894 is a new junior synonym of Cordilura aberrans (Becker, 1894); Cordylura unicolor Loew, 1864 is a new junior synonym of Cordilura albipes (Fallén, 1819)
