Environmental and infectious risk factors for gastroschisis

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston UniversityGastroschisis is a rare congenital malformation where loops of bowel are protruding from the abdominal wall of an infant. The prevalence of gastroschisis has been increasing over the past 20 years, particularly in younger women. However, as the number of studies on gastroschisis increases each year, it continues to remain unclear why the prevalence is increasing and why it disproportionately affects younger mothers. Previous research has suggested that environmental or infectious factors may be involved in the pathogenesis of gastroschisis. This dissertation aims to explore the possibility of these two factors in relation to gastroschisis. In study 1, clusters of gastroschisis were identified in space or the combination of space and time. Cases and controls came from the National Birth Defects Study (NBDPS) or for some study centers from the birth defects surveillance systems. Generalized additive models were used to create a continuous map surface of odds ratios (OR) by smoothing over latitude and longitude. Data from the NBDPS were used for the Arkansas, California, and Utah study centers and the highest adjusted ORs detected were 2.0, 1.3, and 2.4, respectively. In Massachusetts and Texas, where surveillance data were used, the highest adjusted ORs observed were 2.4 and 1.3, respectively, with only the latter state achieving statistical significance. Texas had sufficient data to assess the combination of space and time, which identified an increased risk (OR=2.9) in the center of Texas in 2003. The results of this study suggest that clusters of gastroschisis may exist and further exploration of environmental or behavioral factors are warranted. [TRUNCATED

    Pre-Stressed FRP-Concrete Composite Structural Members

    Get PDF
Fiber reinforced plastic FRP formed about concrete piles and columns. The FRP components generally includes an exterior shell and an interior protruding portions. The concrete filled FRP tubes are enhanced by prestressing the concrete core, thereby increasing the bond with the tube and placing the tube in an active hoop tension. The prestressing can be developed by either post-tensioning a series of strands(or tendons) that are placed inside the core, or by using expansive core materials which do expand upon curing and will therefore impose an active pressure on the confining tube. The bond can be developed by either internal resin grids, FRP spirals, FRP orthotropic grids, sand-resin coating, bonding agent or protruded ribs. The system can be used as a fender pile, bearing pile, bridge pier column, or any structural column. The system can be made by pultrusion, SCRIMP, REM, centrifugal methods or hand lay-up. The invention can additionally enhance the compressive, flexural and shear

Nutritional Approaches for Prevantion and Treatment of Metabolic Syndrome in Adults

    Get PDF
Metabolic syndrome, a clustering of components that reflect overnutrition, sedentary lifestyles, and excess adiposity, has become a major health problem worldwide. The increase in its prevalence could be the result of the increase in obesity and insulin resistance. It is suggested that modification of lifestyle including increasing exercise and improving dietary habits is an effective approach for management of the metabolic syndrome. No single diet is recommended for patients with metabolic syndrome. This paper will review the data and make an evidence-based recommendation for the optimal dietary patterns for reducing cardiometabolic risk

The Study of Culture impacts on Male Managers’ Decision Making within Multinational Project Teams; Case Study: Zirsakht Telecommunication Co

The appropriate method for overcoming problems of new organizations is to provide knowledge based teams with optimum output. Making such teams needs experienced experts. Nowadays productive organizations are increasing and their developing depends on their globalization; therefore cultural differenced may cause great changes in the decision making process in these teams. The aim of the present study is to determine the influence of social culture on male managers’ decisionmaking styles within multinational project teams. For this reason; the number of 100 person of senior and midlevel managers working in the project teams from the two company of Iranian Zirsakht Co and Korean KT Co through Available Non-probabilistic sampling method. The influence of social culture on managers’ decision-making styles has been examined through Structural Equation Model by using the software known as AMOS version 23 in the two section of Evaluation model Structural section. Also SPSS version 23 was applied for comparing analysis results. The results of the recent study showed that social culture influences managers’ decision making styles at international project teams from the two Iranian and Korean nationalities

The role of maternal diet on fetal sex selection: A Review

    Get PDF
Introduction: The desire of the human to control the gender of fetus prior to conception has always been important. The aim of this study was to determine the role of maternal diet on fetal gender. Materials and Methods: In this narrative review study, a comprehensive review of databases including Pubmed, Scirus, Cochrane library, ScienceDirect, MD Consult, google scholar, Iranmedex, Magiran, and SID from 1982 to 2013 was performed. Key words to search databases included fetal sex, sex ratio, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, fructose, eating disorders, sex selection, maternal diet, Ionic diet, fatty acid, calorie, and famine. Results: Results of studies on the effects of nutritional deficiencies and disorders on sex ratio were controversial. Studies showed that a combination of environmental factors such as stress, time of conception and maternal diet had effects on sex ratio. Preconceptional nutritional status of mothers was very important in changing sex ratio. Increasing the intake of K + + Na+/Ca 2 + + Mg2+ in diet and high calorie diet could increase the ratio of male offsprings. Conclusions: Preconceptional diet was important in fetal sex ratio. However, low sample size in most human studies and the complex mechanisms of sex determination make it difficult to conclude definitively on this issue. Further human studies with larger sample size in this field are suggested
