Associations of physical activity with driving-related cognitive abilities in older drivers: an exploratory study

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between physical activity and driving-related cognitive abilities of older drivers. Thirty-eight female and male drivers ages 61 to 81 years (M = 70.2, SD = 5.0) responded to the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and were assessed on a battery of neuropsychological tests, which included measures of visual attention, executive functioning, mental status, visuospatial ability, and memory. A higher amount of reported physical activity was significantly correlated with better scores on tests of visual processing speed and divided visual attention. Higher amounts of physical activity was significantly associated with a better composite score for visual attention, but its correlation with the composite score for executive functioning was not significant. These findings support the hypothesis that physical activity is associated with preservation of specific driving-related cognitive abilities of older adults

Soil microbial biomass in organic farming system.

Agricultural production systems have to combine management practices in order to sustain soil's profitability and quality. Organic farming is gaining worldwide acceptance and has been expanding at an annual rate of 20% in the last decade, accounting for over 24 million hectares worldwide. Organic practices avoid applications of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, rely on organic inputs and recycling for nutrient supply, and emphasize cropping system design and biological processes for pest management, as defined by organic farming regulation in the world. In comparison with conventional farming, organic farming has potential benefits in improving food quality and safety. Plant production in organic farming mainly depends on nutrient release as a function of mineralization processes in soils. The build-up of a large and active soil microbial biomass is important pool of accessible nutrients, therefore, is an important priority in organic farming. In organic farming, there is positive effect of quantity and quality of inputs of organic residues on soil microbial biomass. In this way, the organic systems are extremely important for the increase of the soil fertility and the maintenance of the environmental sustainability

Quando o documentário pensa, Frederick Wiseman

In the cinema in general and particularly in documentary it is very difficult to separate the social concern of one film from its political nature. In his fundamental work in contemporary documentary, Frederick Wiseman shooted some of themost relevant institutions of American society with a declared social concern but alsowith an ethical look and an expression of political thought. Keywords

Neste trabalho mostramos que propriedades de G tais como comprimento de Fitting, nilpotência, expoente e leis positivas estão relacionadas com as respectivas propriedades dos subgrupos de pontos fixos dos elementos de M n F.Let M = FH be a finite group which is a product of two cyclic subgroups F and H, where F is a normal subgroup and all elements of M n F have prime order p. Suppose that M acts as a group of automorphisms on a finite group G in such a manner that CG(F) = 1. In the present work we show that some properties of G such as Fitting height, nilpotency, exponent and positive laws are related to the respective properties of the subgroups of fixed-points of elements in M n F

The Happiest Place on Earth: A Grounded Theory of Fulfillment in Mixed-Orientation Marriages

Mixed-orientation marriages (MOMs) are often misunderstood. There is a general cynicism in research literature and in the broader culture regarding the relational viability of same-sex attracted (SSA) individuals who marry someone of the opposite sex. However, there exist couples in MOMs that are resilient and attain satisfaction. The purpose of this study is to better understand how MOMs might become successful. By interviewing maritally satisfied mixed-orientation couples, the Model of Relational Self- Determination in Mixed-Orientation Marriages was developed. This model is separated into five stages that are organized around the experience of disclosure of the SSA spouse’s sexuality. Depending on what meaning and perceptions are constructed by the couple regarding this disclosure, they may gain the ability to suspend disbelief regarding the viability of their marriage, which informs their attitudes and actions going forward. Mixed-orientation couples who practice relational self-determination—or make consistent, intentional, and self-motivated choices to believe and behave in ways that benefit the relationship—may develop the fruits of those beliefs and choices in the form of a mutually fulfilling relationship

Thus, we were able to observe how they organized themselves against the obstacles of sex, race, and class accentuated in moments of extreme crisis
