A Review of 57 Zone: A social media network for TB consultation and communication in Kunming, China

Yunnan, a predominantly agricultural province in southwest China, is a province with a high rate of both tuberculosis (TB) and multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB), with nearly 25,000 cases of pulmonary TB reported each year. Former TB/MDR TB patients in Yunnan, with the support of Family Health International 360 NGO (FHI) are trying to combat this problem. They have created a social media network for TB consultation and communication, 57 Zone, where TB patients can talk about their medication, adverse drug effects, and nutrition and psychosocial concerns. The goal of this study was the look at what aspects of the program help patients adhere to their TB treatment, as well as what participants feel are the greatest benefits of the program, and what they feel could be improved or changed. Then 57 Zone was compared to other TB support programs around the world in order to provide further suggestions for improvement. To collect information, four interviews were conducted with participants who all hold different roles in the program, including an employee of FHI, a nurse, and two peer-counselors. Participant observations at 57 Zone group meetings as well as informal conversations with online participants were also used to collect information. Results showed that the aspects of 57 Zone with the greatest benefit to participants are the in-person counseling opportunities, as well as the accessibility of the online QQ groups for peer-support. Suggested improvements or additions included better management of the QQ group, even more counseling opportunities, more counselors in hospitals, more financial aid opportunities, and expanding the program to other provinces. Overall this study has found that while there are some suggestions for improvements, this program has shown great success and has contributed to the lower rates of TB in Yunnan by helping patients truly understand their disease, as well as by making them more confident to finish their treatment. With more research and continued improvement, this program could become a model for future patient-support programs around the world

White Power in Context: The Structural Correlates of White Power Support Events in the United States, 2012-2015

Much of the prior research on white power groups focuses on very rare outcomes – criminal events, especially violent ones – without as much attention devoted to the more common or fundamental activities that often work to start the mobilization process for ethnocentric groups and the individuals associated with them. Broadly, the goal of the current study is to fill this gap in knowledge by integrating prominent criminological theories and themes drawn from the Social movement literature in order to explore the geographic distribution and macro-level correlates of ideologically-motivated white power movement activities. Specifically, I implement content analysis techniques of open source and news media materials that geo-locate a wide variety of different white power events expected to signify support and/or mobilization (e.g., rallies), which I then aggregate and pair with demographic and structural measures drawn from the United States Census’s American Communities Survey. The nation-level results indicate that white power organizations target traditionally conservative and financially well-off medium sized towns that have relatively small foreign-born populations. The nation-level results are tempered by the wide variability found in the regional models, highlighting the secretive, grassroots approach typically employed by white power activists

A Synthesis of International School-based Bullying Interventions

Bullying is a prevalent problem in school systems in the United States and abroad. This literature review focuses on elementary school-based bullying interventions for students published between 2005-2012. Ten studies reviewed included students from the first grade through the eighth grade from five countries. There were many common themes among successful bullying interventions including: (a) teacher training, (b) school-wide interventions, (c) social skills training in the classroom, (d) homework as a follow up to instruction, and (e) the incorporation of storybooks. A measurement of the x dependent sea flavor asymmetry at Seaquest

SeaQuest is a fixed target forward spectrometer experiment located at Fermilab which uses a 120 GeV proton beam on liquid hydrogen, liquid deuterium, and several solid targets. The flagship measurement of this experiment is to use the Drell-Yan process to improve the accuracy of the antiquark PDFs in the parton momentum fraction x range 0.1 to 0.58. By measuring the cross section ratio of proton-deutrium(x)/proton-proton(x) one can derive an estimate of the proton sea flavor asymmetry, dbar/ubar, as a function of x. This measurement is of interest to many theoreticians who have proposed several different classes of models in order to simulate the inner workings of the proton, a good test of these models is how well they predict the sea flavor asymmetry. A measurement from a previous experiment, E866, measured dbar/ubar at x above 0.3. The models proposed so far do not predict dbar < ubar at any x, so the accuracy of the E866 experiment in this region is of great interest. An analysis of some but not all of the data collected by SeaQuest is presented in this paper. It contains a measurement of the cross section ratio of proton-deuterium(x)/proton-proton(x), the application of several corrections and uncertainties to this measurement, and the derivation of dbar/ubar(x) from this measurement. Major corrections and uncertainties are the rate dependence correction and the target contamination correction. Particular care is paid to how to correctly merge the results from multiple data sets and optimizing the accuracy of estimating the value of parton momentum fraction x from measured quantities. The most notable feature of these results is that dbar/ubar is not less than one at any value of x, and is above one by several sigma where E866 measured dbar/ubar below one

Eclogites in peridotite massifs in the Western Gneiss Region, Scandinavian Caledonides: Petrogenesis and comparison with those in the Variscan Moldanubian Zone

Eclogite lenses and boudins are volumetrically minor, but petrologically important, features of peridotite massifs worldwide. In the Western Gneiss Region of the Scandinavian Caledonides, eclogites in the Almklovdalen and Raubergvik peridotites originated as basaltic to picrobasaltic dikes, comprising both olivine–normative and nepheline–normative types, with a wide variation in Mg–number from 34 to 65. Positive anomalies for Pb and Sr and negative anomalies for Zr and Hf reflect a subduction signature in the basic melts, and rare–earth element modelling requires 20% to 70% fractional crystallization, combined with 20% to 70% assimilation of peridotite. Clinopyroxenes in eclogites have a wide variation in εNd(0) from +68 to −26, which is comparable to that for associated garnet peridotites and pyroxenites, +55 to −38, and a range in 87Sr/86Sr from 0.7021 to 0.7099, which is much larger than that in peridotites and pyroxenites, 0.7014 to 0.7033. Plagioclase and amphibole inclusions in eclogite garnet provide evidence for prograde metamorphism, which attained a maximum temperature of ~775 °C and pressure of ~25 kb. Such conditions are allofacial with those of associated garnet peridotites and pyroxenites, which equilibrated at ~825 °C and ~37 kb. Eclogites yield mixed Sm-Nd isochron ages, as do the peridotites and pyroxenites, but ages in eclogites are 1000 Ma. Three eclogites yield Ordovician U-Pb ages for rutile at 440 ± 12, 445 ± 51, and 480 ± 29 Ma, which are coeval with the Taconic Orogeny and are consistent with a Laurentian provenance for the host peridotites. Eclogites in both Norwegian and Czech peridotites originated from melts passing through a mantle wedge above a subduction zone, and both suites exhibit subduction geochemical signatures, although they differ dramatically in petrogenesis. Eclogites in Norwegian peridotites initially crystallized as relatively low–pressure, plagioclase–bearing basaltic or gabbroic dikes and subsequently recrystallized to high–pressure eclogite, whereas most eclogites in Variscan Moldanubian peridotites crystallized directly from magmas at high pressure to produce eclogite facies assemblages
