Turnover Rate: Walmart
Walmart was evaluated to determine the relationship between the company’s future turnover rate and its corporate strategy that they currently utilize. The matter was executed by identifying Walmart’s corporate strategy and analyzing if their strategy was to change, in hopes to increase employee satisfaction, how that would affect Walmart’s future success
Challenges in the development of the shuttle extravehicular mobility unit
The development of the Shuttle extravehicular mobility unit (EMU) has required significant technology advances in the design of the astronaut life support system and space-suit assembly. The life support system and space-suit assemblies are integrated into a single system and optimized for the primary function of supporting astronaut extravehicular operations. Rather than accommodating a limited, male-only astronaut population, the EMU must satisfy size requirements for both males and females with a minimum of sized parts. In addition, the Shuttle EMU has been designed to implement Space Shuttle Program philosophy of long operating life and mission reuse capability to minimize program lifetime cost. The advancement in life support system and space-suit technology achieved by the development of the Shuttle extravehicular mobility unit (EMU) is illustrated by comparison with the requirements for and the design features of the Apollo EMU
Apples and Oranges: An Argument for Psychopathy as a Formal Diagnosis
When one thinks of the psychopath, an image of one of the notorious serial killers of the 1980s generally pops in their head- Ted Bundy, J effrey Dahmer, or the Green Rive r Killer. While still rare, psychopaths encompass much more than just serial killers, and they have a unique presentation that lies outside the confines of any current diagnosis. Characteristics such as lack of empathy, impulsivity, grandiosity, and poor behavioral controls are included in various personality disorders. The Narcissist will show lack of empathy and grandiosity while the Borderline will have poor behavioral controls and impulsivity, for example. However, the construct of psychopathy is more complex, including the above traits but also callousness, malipulativeness, superficial charm, and lack of guilt. These unique characteristics, when appropriately identified, are detrimental to society, resulting in extreme financial loss, overwhelming hurt, and even death, which is why labeling as such is important
Exploring Different Operationalizations of Employee Engagement and Their Relationships with Workplace Stress and Burnout Among IT Professionals in Community Hospitals
This study suggested that the relationships between workplace stress, burnout and employee engagement depend on how the construct of employee engagement is actually measured. The study\u27s hypotheses predicted negative relationships between employee engagement and workplace stress and further predicted that burnout would play a mediating role in those negative relationships. However, it was predicted that even similarly conceptualized measures of employee engagement would expose different relationships with these variables suggesting that the selection of employee engagement measurement instruments is vital both to understanding different aspects of the construct and to its operationalization in practice. Responding to a resurgence in scholarly interest in Kahn\u27s (1990) conceptualization, two different (but similarly conceptualized) needs-satisfaction based measurements of employee engagement were employed: the Rich Scale (Rich, Lepine, & Crawford, 2010) and the ISA Scale (Soane et al., 2012). This study examined the relationships between workplace stress, burnout and engagement on both the overall and subscale (or dimensional) components of these two instruments to understand the similarities and differences between them and to evaluate what those similarities and/or differences might suggest from both a theoretical and practical perspective. Further, by not using burnout-antithesis based measures of engagement (which are often used in engagement-related research), this study sought to address some of the tensions in the scholarly literature about the relationships between burnout and employee engagement
Corruption as a Last Resort
Why do ordinary people engage in corruption? In Corruption as a Last Resort, Kelly M. McMann contends that bureaucrats, poverty, and culture do not force individuals in Central Asia to pay bribes, use connections, or sell political support. Rather, corruption is a last resort when relatives, groups in society, the market, and formal government programs cannot provide essential goods and services. Using evidence from her long-term research in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, McMann shows that Islamic institutions, secular charities, entrepreneurs, and banks cannot provide the jobs and credit people need. This drives individuals to illicitly seek employment and loans from government officials
Outcomes of Extravesical Versus Intravesical Ureteral Reimplantation
Purpose: The purpose of our study was to examine outcomes and compare length of stay after extravesical and intravesical ureteral reimplantation at our institution. Materials and Methods: Retrospective review was performed of 30 patients (55 ureters) with vesicoureteral reflux who underwent either the Cohen (intravesical) cross-trigonal procedure or the extravesical (detrusorrhaphy) approach. Each patient had documented follow-up consisting of a postoperative renal ultrasound and/or a voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG). Inclusion criteria was the presence of primary vesicoureteral reflux. Exclusion criteria were patients who had undergone a previous repair and patients in whom results of neither the renal ultrasound nor the VCUG were available. Results: There were no significant cases of obstruction or wound infection with either approach. Two patients who underwent the extravesical approach had persistent reflux on VCUG three months postoperatively, but both resolved by fifteen months. Average length of stay was only 3.00 ± 1.33 days for the extravesical approach, compared to 5.36 ± 1.75 days for the intravesical approach ( P = .0003 ). Conclusions: Given that by fifteen months success rates were the same with either approach, the extravesical approach is comparable to the intravesical technique and is a viable option in terms of outcome and economics given the shorter length of hospital stay
Reliability model generator
An improved method and system for automatically generating reliability models for use with a reliability evaluation tool is described. The reliability model generator of the present invention includes means for storing a plurality of low level reliability models which represent the reliability characteristics for low level system components. In addition, the present invention includes means for defining the interconnection of the low level reliability models via a system architecture description. In accordance with the principles of the present invention, a reliability model for the entire system is automatically generated by aggregating the low level reliability models based on the system architecture description
A search for rotating radio transients and fast radio bursts in the Parkes high-latitude pulsar survey
Discoveries of rotating radio transients and fast radio bursts (FRBs) in
pulsar surveys suggest that more of such transient sources await discovery in
archival data sets. Here we report on a single-pulse search for dispersed radio
bursts over a wide range of Galactic latitudes (|b| < ) in data
previously searched for periodic sources by Burgay et al. We re-detected 20 of
the 42 pulsars reported by Burgay et al. and one rotating radio transient
reported by Burke-Spolaor. No FRBs were discovered in this survey. Taking into
account this result, and other recent surveys at Parkes, we corrected for
detection sensitivities based on the search software used in the analyses and
the different backends used in these surveys and find that the all-sky FRB
event rate for sources with a fluence above 4.0 Jy ms at 1.4 GHz to be FRBs day sky, where the
uncertainties represent a confidence interval. While this rate is lower
than inferred from previous studies, as we demonstrate, this combined event
rate is consistent with the results of all systematic FRB searches at Parkes to
date and does not require the need to postulate a dearth of FRBs at
intermediate latitudes.Comment: Accepted, 10 pages, 6 figure
