The urbanization of summer holiday estates surrounding Łódź: Wiśniowa Góra
The article presents the reconstruction of the urbanization process in Wiśniowa Góra, a village near Łódź. It came into being in 1870 as a farming village, surrounded by a forest. After several years the holiday function developed there, which became the base for the general development of the destination during the inter-war period. In 1945 - 1989 Wiśniowa Góra became a dormitory village and a summer holiday estate. The political and economic transformation, which started in 1989, has led to the collapse of the holiday function and the development of the residential function, thus transforming Wiśniowa Góra into a Łódź suburb
Cannabis Indica as a Motivation for Foreign Travel by Polish Citizens
Based on an anonymous on-line questionnaire survey, conducted among 1000 respondents, the authors present their demographic, socio-economic and spatial profile, their attitude to cannabis and the tourist trips they went on (scale, directions, destinations), involving cannabis consumption. Tourist trips of this kind were attractive to quite a large number of young people, mostly inhabiting large Polish cities, who usually had used and continued to use this drug. Trips inspired by cannabis were most often made to the nearby Czech Republic and Netherlands, as well as (less frequently) to Spain
Why Consultations? The public participation in water management and local spatial planning in two Polish cases
Despite many novelties in participation: participatory budgeting, citizens jury, deliberatice poll etc. the engagement of different stakeholders’ groups in the decision making processes concerning detailed planning issues (local spatial management plans, water management plans, the preservation management plans of the Natura 2000 sites) is usually based on the organization of open discussion meetings. The study looks at the social consultations regarding acceptance of local spatial management plans managed by Poznań City Hall and consultations concerning the preparation of water management plans managed by Regional Water Management Board in Poznań. The comparative analysis served to exhibit similarities and differences between the processes in terms of legal conditions, the organization of meetings, the length and the scale of the process and the actors engaged
Judicial reforms in Poland - getting the public on board
On 24 July, Poland’s President, Andrzej Duda, indicated that he would veto several judicial reforms that had generated protests within the country. Anna Matczak argues that the views of the public toward judicial reform have become obscured. She highlights that there is a deep level of mistrust among Polish citizens toward the criminal justice system and that the recent controversy should be used as motivation to give the public a greater say over improving the quality of criminal justice processes
