    Analysis of a Poisson-Nernst-Planck-Fermi system for charge transport in ion channels

    A modified Poisson-Nernst-Planck system in a bounded domain with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions is analyzed. It describes the concentrations of ions immersed in a polar solvent and the correlated electric potential due to the ion--solvent interaction. The concentrations solve cross-diffusion equations, which are thermodynamically consistent. The considered mixture is saturated, meaning that the sum of the ion and solvent concentrations is constant. The correlated electric potential depends nonlocally on the electric potential and solves the fourth-order Poisson-Fermi equation. The existence of global bounded weak solutions is proved by using the boundedness-by-entropy method. The novelty of the paper is the proof of the weak--strong uniqueness property. In contrast to the existence proof, we include the solvent concentration in the cross-diffusion system, leading to a diffusion matrix with nontrivial kernel. Then the proof is based on the relative entropy method for the extended cross-diffusion system and the positive definiteness of a related diffusion matrix on a subspace

    Vivendo em família ou em instituição: a experiência ótima, metas e desafios na vida de adolescentes

    The influence of family relationships on adolescents' behavior and development has been widely investigated. This study examines the relationship between family structure and a) adolescents' quality of experience in daily activities and social contexts b) adolescents' perceived life influences, challenges and goals. To achieve this aim, Flow Questionnaire and Life Theme Questionnaire were administered to 50 Italian girls (15-21 years of age), 25 living in two-parent families, 25 entrusted to Institutions for Custody of Minors. The findings suggest tha adolescents' perception of a positive and supportive family enviroment fosters the active search for challenges and enjoyment in daily activities, and the involvement in productive and social contexts. On the contrary , negative family perception is related to lack of engagement and motivation, and to the prevalence of low-challenge activities as sources of enjoyment and satisfaction. Although the sample size does not allow us to draw conclusions about causality, the results confirm the crucial role of family in influencing adolescents' psychological and behavioral development.A influência das relações familiares no comportamento e desenvolvimento de adolescentes tem sido amplamente investigada. Este estudo examina a relação entre a estrutura familiar e a qualidade das experiências de adolescentes nas atividades diárias e contextos sociais, e a percepção que eles têm das influências em suas vidas, de seus desafios e metas. Para atingir estes objetivos, Flow Questionnaire e o Life Theme Questionnaire foram aplicados a 50 adolescentes italianas (15-21 anos), 25 vivendo em famílias com ambos os pais, 25 em Instituições Abrigo. Os dados sugerem que a percepção dos adolescentes de um ambiente familiar positivo e acolhedor incentiva a busca por atividades diárias desafiadoras e agradáveis e o envolvimento em contextos sociais produtivos. Ao contrário, uma percepção negativa da família está relacionada com falta de engajamento e motivação e a prevalência de atividades com baixo índice de desafio como fonte de divertimento e satisfação. Os resultados, apesar de se ter uma amostra pequena que não permite generalizações, confirmam o papel crucial da família no influenciar o desenvolvimento psicológico e comportamental dos adolescentes

    Biological and cultural inheritance deeply influence daily human behavior. However, individuals actively interact with bio-cultural information. Throughout their lives, they preferentially cultivate a limited subset of activities, values, and personal interests. This process, defined as psychological selection, is strictly related to the quality of subjective experience. Specifically, cross-cultural studies have highlighted the central role played by optimal experience or flow, the most positive and complex daily experience reported by the participants. It is characterized by high involvement, deep concentration, intrinsic motivation, and the perception of high challenges matched by adequate personal skills. The associated activities represent the basic units of psychological selection. Flow can therefore influence the selective transmission of bio-cultural information and the process of bio-cultural evolution

    Tracking dynamic interactions between structural and functional connectivity : a TMS/EEG-dMRI study

    Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in combination with neuroimaging techniques allows to measure the effects of a direct perturbation of the brain. When coupled with high-density electroencephalography (TMS/hd-EEG), TMS pulses revealed electrophysiological signatures of different cortical modules in health and disease. However, the neural underpinnings of these signatures remain unclear. Here, by applying multimodal analyses of cortical response to TMS recordings and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) tractography, we investigated the relationship between functional and structural features of different cortical modules in a cohort of awake healthy volunteers. For each subject, we computed directed functional connectivity interactions between cortical areas from the source-reconstructed TMS/hd-EEG recordings and correlated them with the correspondent structural connectivity matrix extracted from dMRI tractography, in three different frequency bands (alpha, beta, gamma) and two sites of stimulation (left precuneus and left premotor). Each stimulated area appeared to mainly respond to TMS by being functionally elicited in specific frequency bands, that is, beta for precuneus and gamma for premotor. We also observed a temporary decrease in the whole-brain correlation between directed functional connectivity and structural connectivity after TMS in all frequency bands. Notably, when focusing on the stimulated areas only, we found that the structure-function correlation significantly increases over time in the premotor area controlateral to TMS. Our study points out the importance of taking into account the major role played by different cortical oscillations when investigating the mechanisms for integration and segregation of information in the human brain

    Abstract: If we were asked to draw a graph to represent the distribution of consciousness in the world around us (from dolphins to honeybees) based on objective criteria, we would definitely be in trouble. The two objective parameters that have been traditionally considered as a guide – the complexity of behavior and brain size – lead to paradoxical conclusions and turn out to be unsatisfactory, to say the least. We need to find novel, reliable metrics.     Technique and application of a non-invasive three dimensional image matching method for the study of total shoulder arthroplasty

No data has been published on the in-vivo glenohumeral joint contact locations in patients after total shoulder arthroplasty. Therefore, the objectives of this thesis were to determine the in-vivo glenohumeral joint contact locations and humeral head translations in patients after total shoulder arthroplasty. First, a non-invasive three dimensional fluoroscopic image matching method was developed and validated for use in the shoulder joint complex. Next, a group of patients that have undergone clinically successful total shoulder arthroplasty surgeries were recruited for study and imaged by the fluoroscopic imaging technique.The fluoroscopic imaging system was recreated in a virtual environment and the in vivo kinematics that were recorded by the fluoroscopes were recreated with three dimensional models. The contact centroids of the glenohumeral joint and humeral head translations were measured using solid modeling software. In summary, this thesis quantified the in-vivo glenohumeral joint contact locations and humeral head translations after total shoulder arthroplasty. These data provides surgeons and engineers valuable information for developing surgical treatments that may better help recreate 'normal' motion of the shoulder after total shoulder arthroplasty.by Daniel Frank Massimini.S.M
