Thesis (D.M.A.)--Boston UniversityInspired by cosmic forces, this piece is concerned with disruptive gestures and the resonance and repercussions that arise in their aftermath. In the first half of this single movement work, a simple theme spins out from an initial, fortissimo "white key" cluster on the piano, surrounded by subtly shifting harmonies and timbres. The theme is then fragmented within a "black key" pentatonic harmonic world, culminating in a new set of piano clusters, from which emerge a final series of harmonic and timbral expanses

Professional and recreational physical activity, is connected with a danger of injuries of locomotor system. Despite of a positive influence of physical motion on the human body, too much of workload makes the body exposed to rise up micro- and makrotrauma. Each sport discipline is characterized by its own rules and specificity of the game and training. Team games are distinguished by a large variable of factors influencing the athlete. The most traumatic sports disciplines are football and volleyball. The aim of the research was to evaluate and compare the injuries occurring in women training one of the above-mentioned disciplines. It has been shown that in both football and volleyball players, sprains of the ankle joint were the most common injuries in the lower limb, followed immediately by tears / ruptures of the knee ligaments. In the area of the upper limb, in footballers, a high percentage of shoulder contusions was noted, which may be related to the contact nature of the game. Volleyball players more often suffered injuries of the phalanges. Najbardziej traumatyczne dyscypliny sportowe to piłka nożna i siatkówka.

Influence of Ground Motion Variability on Design Spectra in Areas of Low to Moderate Seismicity

    Get PDF
This paper examines the sensitivity of uniform hazard response spectra to the variability of the ground motion attenuation in areas of low to moderate seismicity. The variabilities of a number of published attenuation relationships are examined. Many of these relationships show that the standard deviation tends to increase as the natural period increases and some show a tendency for the standard deviation to reduce as the earthquake magnitude increases. These published works tend to be derived from earthquake data for areas of high seismicity and therefore the paper includes a critical review of what values of standard deviation are appropriate for regions of low to moderate seismicity

The Importance of Creating Value in Seismic Design

Major earthquakes have resulted in devastating consequences in terms of human and economic loss. In almost all the earthquakes we observe the failure of structures, sometimes due to poor construction but also due to designers not identifying the specific geo-hazards (iIntensity of ground motion, faults, liquefaction, slopes etc) which affect these structures. In many cases these damages could have been avoided if the original design had correctly identified the geohazards at the site and incorporated the philosophy of performance based design. In this paper several examples will be presented where the different stages of risk assessment will be identified and possible solutions incorporated in the final design. The paper provides examples where existing studies and codes in certain countries may be storing up problems for the future. This paper also highlights some gaps in existing knowledge where more research is needed. Design examples will also cover the advantages of performing detailed design accounting for soil structure interaction effects. In many cases these will offer potential saving to the clients and thus provide value in seismic design. Examples are shown where structures which have accounted for the geohazards will be shown to perform satisfactorily during past earthquakes

Selected Issues of QoS Provision in Heterogenous Military Networks

Tactical ad-hoc networks are evolving today towards complex heterogeneous networks in terms of architecture, protocols and security. Due to the difference in network resources and reliability, end-to-end quality of service provisioning becomes very challenging. If we also take into account communication issues such as unpredictable connectivity, preferential forwarding for special traffic classes, intermittency due to node or communication link failure, the problem is further aggravated. In this article, we examine the major challenges that must be solved in order to provide efficient QoS provisioning in the heterogeneous network. Finally we describe QoS-aware mechanisms for inter-domain and intra-domain heterogeneous networks, also including real-time services provision in highly mobile environments.
