Automatic speed control of highway traffic

    Get PDF
Vehicle control system monitors all vehicles in its range, and automatically slows down speeding vehicles by activating governor in vehicle. System determines only maximum speed; speeds below maximum are controlled by vehicle operator. Loss of transmitted signal or activation of emergency over-ride will open fuel line and return control to operator

Corl8: A System for Analyzing Diagnostic Measures in Wireless Sensor Networks

    Get PDF
Due to an increasing demand to monitor the physical world, researchers are deploying wireless sensor networks more than ever before. These networks comprise a large number of sensors integrated with small, low-power wireless transceivers used to transmit data to a central processing and storage location. These devices are often deployed in harsh, volatile locations, which increases their failure rate and decreases the rate at which packets can be successfully transmitted. Existing sensor debugging tools, such as Sympathy and EmStar, rely on add-in network protocols to report status information, and to collectively diagnose network problems. Some protocols rely on a central node to initiate the diagnosis sequence. These methods can congest network channels and consume scarce resources, including battery power. In this thesis, we present Corl8, a system for analyzing diagnostic traces in wireless sensor networks. Our method relies on diagnostic data that is periodically transmitted to a network sink as a part of the standard sensor payload to enable fault diagnosis. Corl8 does not require any specific data to be present in the system, making it flexible. Our system provides an interactive environment for exploring correlated changes across different diagnostic measures within an individual node. It also supports processing on a batch level to automatically flag interesting correlations. The system\u27s flexibility makes it applicable for use in any wireless sensor network that transmits diagnostic measures. The analysis methods are user-configurable, but we suggest settings and analyze their performance. For our evaluation, we use data from five real-world deployments from the Intelligent River(R) project consisting of 36 sensor nodes

Correlation Between Nonprofit Organizational Income and Commercial Activities

    Get PDF
Nonprofit organizations are increasingly using social enterprise to increase net revenues available to perpetuate social mission activities. Demand for services has outpaced available funding, and thus, leaders of nonprofit organizations must seek effective sources of funding that do not increase their operational expenses. Grounded in Clark’s dynamic theory and Shumpeter’s innovation theory of profit, the purpose of this quantitative ex post facto research was to examine the relationship between revenues from commercial activities, operational expenses, and net revenues. Secondary data were collected from the 2018 Internal Revenue Service Form 990 for nonprofit organizations (n = 122). Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression, and the results were not statistically significant. A key recommendation based on these findings is for nonprofit organization leaders to examine financial statements to determine if commercial activities provide opportunities for greater net revenues that increase their ability to have a social impact. The implications for positive social change include the potential to provide direction for nonprofit organizational leaders to increase the efficiency and efficacy of their organizations

Land Use Analysis of the Milwaukee County Institutional Grounds: a Chronological and Spatial Depiction of Cultural Change

    Get PDF
This thesis uses GIS analysis of spatial data and historical documentation to determine land use change in the Milwaukee County Institutional Grounds (MCIG) located in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. This chronological and spatial land use analysis specifically examined aspects of the grounds in relationship to historically documented changes taking place during MCIG operations from 1850 to 1980. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a more accurate account of the grounds throughout the timeframe. This thesis, featuring a GIS model, includes a series of digitized maps that provide for a more accurate account of the grounds throughout the timeframe studied. Results include a GIS model designed to facilitate future research of the MCIG. The chronological and spatial land use analysis conducted here may serve as a basis for researchers interested in using different sources of historical documentation in order to conduct a chronological and spatial analysis of a changing land area

Against Corruption: Fred Karl and the Senate Select Committee on Suspensions and Removals, 1968-1974

Suspending or removing public officials from office at any level of government and at any point in time always has provided cause for serious concern. Impeachments, suspensions, and removals of municipal, county, or federal officers cause two major constitutional issues to surface which must be resolved to the populace’s satisfaction. The first is the right of citizens, through the electoral process, to be guaranteed their legitimate representation and to remain the ultimate judge of all elected officials’ tenure in office. Even today, as term limitations are debated, perhaps leading to another constitutional amendment, this republican cornerstone remains fundamental. The basic public right to keep a publicly elected official in office until voted out historically underscored arguments against draconian measures in suspension or removal cases

The call of the wild: Investigating the relationship between adventure education, character development, and the college curriculum

The purpose of this research was to investigate the potential utilization of adventure education programs to provide an effective and innovative alternative for enhancing the college undergraduate experience. Initial research consisted of performing an indepth study of higher education\u27s curriculum reform literature and studies and literature on adventure education programs. Specific components of the curriculum reform literature regarding character development were then correlated with attributes discovered in the adventure education literature. The interrelationship that developed provided a theoretical rationale from which to propose that adventure education programs could indeed address many of the objectives of the recommended curriculum.;The next step in the research was the implementation of a quasi experimental study designed to see if an adventure education program located in the traditional college curriculum was affecting the character of the students involved. Four character traits were targeted: responsibility, self-acceptance, socialization, and tolerance. The California Psychological Inventory was administered to the students during the first week of classes and again thirteen weeks later to detect changes. The scores were studied using the ANCOVA statistical method. None of the scores on the four personality scales were found to be significant at the.05 level. However, the sensitivity of the instrument to detect changes over such a short period of time was in question.;A qualitative questionnaire administered along with the posttest did reveal perceived changes in the character of the subjects. Confidence, responsibility, interpersonal or social skills. and risk taking were strongly perceived by the students as being positively affected by their participation in the adventure education course.;It was concluded that adventure education programs could provide an effective and innovative alternative for enhancing the college undergraduate experience. Adventure education programs, possibly more then any single incumbent program, have provided evidence in support of this claim. their implementation in the college curriculum should be considered.;Further study is needed in order to investigate the effectiveness of adventure programs in various settings in the college curriculum and in defining the specific components in the program that are responsible for positively affecting character development
