Relational Ethics: Volunteering and the Responsibilities of the Good Muslim

    Get PDF
This article explores the ways in which female Belgian Muslim volunteers experience responsibility. It argues that responsibility consists of multiple dynamics for the volunteers, for example, the duties that are embedded in the Islamic tradition and the duties that arise from being a good citizen in a liberal/secular context. While these are often emphasized as being contentious binaries—especially for Muslims living in the West—this paper suggests that volunteering allows the Muslim women to bring these worlds together. The ways in which volunteering enables this is by introducing a relational reading of ethics and ethical self-formation. Relationality is highly significant for the female Muslim volunteer. It signifies being in touch with both (non-liberal) Islamic ethics and liberal public norms, even when pursuing a pious lifestyle. Hence, the article explores the ways in which responsibility is actualized in this framework. Finally, the last section interrogates how this idea of responsibility and relationality re-articulates binaries of the good-Muslim and the bad-Muslim

EKONOMSKI RAST I POTRONJA ELEKTRICNE ENERGIJE U EUROPSKIM ZEMLJAMA U RAZVOJU: ARDL ANALIZA

The structure of energy intensity is not only important for the econo- mists but also for the policymakers since it contributes to the policy debate on the link between energy use and economic growth and co-movement of the energy supply and growth policies. This study estimates the causal re- lationship between energy consumption and economic growth at per capita and aggregate levels for some transition countries in Europe; Albania, Be- larus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.. The study also presents the income elasticities of total energy de- mand by using the ARDL (Auto Regressive Distributed Lag) method. Rad takoer prezentira elastiµcnost prihoda u ukupnoj potraµznji energije koriste´ci ARDL (auto-regresijsku s vremenskim pomakom) metodu

This report summarizes the activities of the KTU-GEOD IVS Analysis Center (AC) in 2012 and outlines planned activities for 2013. The analysis of the EUROPE sessions is one of our specific interests, and the combination of different AC solutions for continuous VLBI campaigns, e.g. CONT11, will be investigated

On the contribution of wind farms in automatic generation control: Review and new control approach

    Get PDF
© 2018 by the authors. Wind farms can contribute to ancillary services to the power system, by advancing and adopting new control techniques in existing, and also in new, wind turbine generator systems. One of the most important aspects of ancillary service related to wind farms is frequency regulation, which is partitioned into inertial response, primary control, and supplementary control or automatic generation control (AGC). The contribution of wind farms for the first two is well addressed in literature; however, the AGC and its associated controls require more attention. In this paper, in the first step, the contribution of wind farms in supplementary/load frequency control of AGC is overviewed. As second step, a fractional order proportional-integral-differential (FOPID) controller is proposed to control the governor speed of wind turbine to contribute to the AGC. The performance of FOPID controller is compared with classic proportional-integral-differential (PID) controller, to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed control method in the frequency regulation of a two-area power system. Furthermore, the effect of penetration level of wind farms on the load frequency control is analyzed

Contemporary educational supervision expresses democratic and leadership focused supervisory approach which consists of collaboration, trust, sharing and improving. The aims of the study are to investigate the answer of how current teacher supervision in Turkey is conducted according to the views of educational supervisors, and to unearth what the general attitudes and evaluations of educational supervisors regarding clinical supervision. A phenemological research design was used in the study. The study group consists of 53 educational supervisors working in the province of Antalya. A structured form consists of both open and close ended questions was delivered to the supervisors participated in the study. Data was gathered oral and written via interviews. A conference lasting six hours on clinical supervision’s aim, processes, techniques, observation and data collecting tools was held for the supervisors within the study. According to the results of the study, current supervision may be categorized under four stages; the stage before reaching the school setting, pre-observation, observation, and post-observation. That the views of educational supervisors are positive regarding the applicability of clinical supervision. The participants, mostly, stressed that the supervisory duties must be divided from the duties of investigation, and that the supervisors must be trained on clinical supervision. Keywords: clinical supervision, educational supervisors, evaluation, school

Mobility-On-Demand Service In Mass Transit: Hypercommute options

    Get PDF
Digitization, increasing automation and new business models like shared mobility have revolutionized transportation and mobility. Ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft provide technological platforms and support to connect drivers and riders on the basis of demand-response services. Although the most improvements in on-demand applications have been experimented in private transit services, there is no any implementation in public transportation to connect public transit services and passengers each other. Ondemand is still vague. However, providing on-demand services in public transportation is complicated because of the big capacity problem in mass transit, its application in public transit services can enable flexible mobility for riders and provide personalized mobility experience. This paper presents the concept of mobility-on-demand service and its application in public transit services with an technological innovation of FM/LM pilot project represented by HyperCommute. The paper starts with introduction, then the business model of mobility-on-demand service is described and the most used algorithms are explained, then an illustrative example of HyperCommute mobility-on-demand service is given. Also, the applicability of mobility-on-demand service in Istanbul is discussed. The paper ends up with conclusion and future directions
