Ship Wake Detection in SAR Images via Sparse Regularization
In order to analyse synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of the sea surface,
ship wake detection is essential for extracting information on the wake
generating vessels. One possibility is to assume a linear model for wakes, in
which case detection approaches are based on transforms such as Radon and
Hough. These express the bright (dark) lines as peak (trough) points in the
transform domain. In this paper, ship wake detection is posed as an inverse
problem, which the associated cost function including a sparsity enforcing
penalty, i.e. the generalized minimax concave (GMC) function. Despite being a
non-convex regularizer, the GMC penalty enforces the overall cost function to
be convex. The proposed solution is based on a Bayesian formulation, whereby
the point estimates are recovered using maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation.
To quantify the performance of the proposed method, various types of SAR images
are used, corresponding to TerraSAR-X, COSMO-SkyMed, Sentinel-1, and ALOS2. The
performance of various priors in solving the proposed inverse problem is first
studied by investigating the GMC along with the L1, Lp, nuclear and total
variation (TV) norms. We show that the GMC achieves the best results and we
subsequently study the merits of the corresponding method in comparison to two
state-of-the-art approaches for ship wake detection. The results show that our
proposed technique offers the best performance by achieving 80% success rate.Comment: 18 page
Generalized Bicomplex Numbers and Lie Groups
In this paper, we denone the generalized bicomplex numbers and give some
algebraic properties of them. Also, we show that some hyperquadrics in R4 and
R42 are Lie groups by using generalized bicomplex number product and obtain Lie
algebras of these Lie groups. Morever, by using tensor product surfaces, we
determine some special Lie subgroups of these hyperquadrics.Comment: thank yo
Identitätssuche : Der Prozess oder das Ziel? Yade Karas Roman „Selam Berlin“
Recently the changing and the internationalization of the German philology are increasing continually. On this development not only the cooperation of its actants plays an important role, but also the subject of the German philology itself has been extended. One of the factors of the extension of its subjects is the so called ‘intercultural literature’ in Germany, which is the result of the migration since the beginning of the sixties. In this kind of the literature, among other things, the cultural differences are made a subject of discussion with specific literary means. One of the novels of the intercultural literature is “Selam Berlin” written by Yade Kara. In this article, it should be worked out which identity discourses are developed, how the new social formation in Germany has an effect on the individuals and which role the self and strange perceptions play in this novel
Chess and Education
This review aims to present how chess improves student abilities and underlines inferences about chess and its educational benefits. In this study, quantitative samples, experimental designs, or test scores of studies are not the main focus. Numerous experimental studies and limited review studies about chess instruction in the literature express the effect of chess on students’ success and mental skills. However, almost all of these studies address only positive effects; this review attempts to explain how chess achieves this success. What are the other components of this effect? Is it really possible to determine how chess affects education? The question is how and why chess is thought to be so effective? Is it possible to present examples by linking basic features of chess, lessons, and cognitive structures
Evaluating the vocational thoughts of university students about the departments they are studying
The aim of this study is to reveal the vocational thoughts of university students about departments they are studying. The sample of the study consists of 1040 students; 608 (60,6%) of them are female, and 396 (39,4%) of them are male students who are studying in the different faculties of the Selçuk University (Health Sciences, Law, Veterinary, Collage of Science, Faculty of Letters, Communication, Agriculture, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Engineering),and they selectedby random sampling method. The average of age of the students is varying between 19 and 39. The average of age is 22. During the data collection phrase “Demographic Information Form”; during the evaluation of the data frequency polygon is used.At the end of the study it is detected that 743 (74%) of the students are willingly, and 261 (26%) of the students are unwillingly came to the department they are studying. Also; the uneasiest situation for the students’ future is to not find a job for 492 (49,0%) of them, financial difficulties for 282 (28,1%) of them, mate selection for 230 (22,9%) of them. At the same time, it is confirmed that 679 (67,6%) of the students want to work in public sector, and 325 (32,4%) of them want to work in private sector after graduation. It is seen that 198 (19,7%) of the students define unemployment as not to find a job in public sector, and 806 (80,3%) of them define unemployment as not to earn income. 458 (45,6%) of the students who participated to study are pleased with the employment opportunities, but 546 (54,4%) of them are not. It is detected that students of the departments of Social Work, English Language and Literature, Civil and Mechanical Engineering are pleased with employment opportunities after graduation, but the students of the departments of Statistic, Biology, Chemistry, History of Art, Sociology are not. Also, 395 (39,3%) of the students stated that they think they will be unemployed when they graduated, 609 (60,7%) of them do not think they are going to be an unemployed; departments of Social Work, English Language and Literature, Civil and Mechanical Engineering students stated that they are not going to become unemployed when they graduated, but the students of the departments of Statistic, Biology, Chemistry, History of Art, Sociology stated that they are going to become unemployed. Most of the university students choose their departments willingly. What makes university students anxious most is being unemployed. Students want to work in public sector when they graduate. For the unemployment anxiety that students are experiencing, state has to develop new policies related with employment. In order to make students believe that they would find job easily, apart from the departments they enroll in, alternative ways for career development can be provided
Being a child in the pronatalist culture an essay on newspaper reports of the years of 1929-1940
This study focuses on the detail of the relationship between children and the politics of
the new regime by centering the Republican period pronatalist policies. It can be
estimated that a country which has come out of a devastating war, has experienced
territorial losses and has subsequently fallen into the clutches of epidemics has faced
with serious losses in its human resources. It is inevitable for a society which moves on
after being weakened with these losses to continue to the rhythm of the world by
recuperating afterwards. The politicians of that period who were aware of that the
biggest power needed in the given period is the human resources, have been in a
search of different ways for the rectification and strengthening of the wounded
Turkish society through population policies at every opportunity. Within the authentic
boundaries of the state mechanism, the family and marriage in general and the
existence of the child in particular has a determining role. The fact that the
identification of the road to the child is encoded through family and marriage has been
continuously intersecting the paths of this tripartite mechanism. The fact that the
belief towards marriage and family was stronger than ever, has increased the need for
pronatalist policies as of that period. This study focuses on the way of handling the
issue by the newspapers of the years between 1929 and 1940. It was conducted a
content analysis from the titles preferred in the newspaper reports to the language
used and the presentation type of the news. It was seen that many reasons including
the continuity of the lineage and the safety of the nation in its authentic boundaries,
the fear towards that biological losses will cause losses in many other fields, the need
for both the quantity and the quality of the people, the desire to avert disinformation
in human resources, and the belief towards that development will realize with a
dynamic population, are among the precipitating reasons of the Republican period
pronatalist policies.
eksilerek hayata devam eden toplumun, dünyanın ritmine, toparlanarak devam etmesi
Rhodium-catalyzed reactions of (Z)-2-EN-4yne acetates with arylboronic acids
Thesis (Master)--İzmir Institute of Technology, Chemistry, İzmir, 2011Includes bibliographical references (leaves: 50-54)Text in English; Abstract: Turkish and Englishx, 188 leavesThis study is the first example of rhodium(I)-catalyzed arylative SN2ʺ type reaction of (Z)-2-en-4-yne acetates with arylboronic acids leading to E-configured vinyl-allenes with an aryl moiety. The coordinative interaction of the rhodium with carbonyl oxygen promoted the -elimination of Rh(I)-OAc from the alkenylrhodium intermediate in both syn- and anti-modes, with the syn-elimination being the major path. DFT calculations revealed that a conformer of this intermediate which can lead to the E-configured vinylallene product via the syn-elimination mode, is energetically the most favorable conformer. The rhodium-catalyzed procedure is not applicable to reactions involving (E)- configured enyne acetates, because the geometry of the alkenylrhodium intermediate that is derived from the corresponding E-enyne acetate would not allow such coordinative interaction to occur

Can We "Sense" the Call of The Ocean? Current Advances in Remote Sensing Computational Imaging for Marine Debris Monitoring
Especially due to the unconscious use of petroleum products, the ocean faces
a potential danger: . Plastic pollutes not only the
ocean but also directly the air and foods whilst endangering the ocean
wild-life due to the ingestion and entanglements. Especially, during the last
decade, public initiatives and academic institutions have spent an enormous
time on finding possible solutions to marine plastic pollution. Remote sensing
imagery sits in a crucial place for these efforts since it provides highly
informative earth observation products. Despite this, detection, and monitoring
of the marine environment in the context of plastic pollution is still in its
early stages and the current technology offers possible important development
for the computational efforts. This paper contributes to the literature with a
thorough and rich review and aims to highlight notable literature milestones in
marine debris monitoring applications by promoting the computational imaging
methodology behind these approaches.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figure
