Designing Professional Learning Tasks for Mathematics Learning Trajectories

    Get PDF
In this paper, we present an emerging set of learning conjectures and design principles to be used in the development of professional learning tasks that support elementary teachers’ learning of mathematics learning trajectories. We outline our theoretical perspective on teacher knowledge of learning trajectories, review the literature concerning mathematics professional learning tasks, offer a set of initial conjectures about teacher learning of learning trajectories, and articulate a set of principles to guide the design of tasks. We conclude with an example of one learning trajectory professional learning task taken from our current research project

Representation, immigration, experience and memory: a study of representational dynamics of “the other” in post imperial Britain (1947-1990s) with special reference to African and African Caribbean immigrants

MA by Research Dissertation Submitted in accordance with requirements for the degree of MA Media StudiesThe study is an assessment of the proposition that the British media coverage of African and African Caribbean minority ethnic communities is permeated with 'othering'. It analysed the mode of accounting and explaining mobilised by some of the national press regarding racial unrest, focusing particularly on those major events that served to narrativise and recompose the image of immigrants as the 'other' in the context of articulating Britishness. These are Enoch Powell's Rivers of Blood speech in 1968 and the Brixton disturbance of 1981. A content/frame analysis of newspaper coverage of these events was carried out. Seymore-Ure's analysis of the media's response to Powell's speech in The Political Impact of Mass Media (1974) served as major point of reference. In addition, the study explored through in-dept interviews the relationship between lived experiences and popular media discourses in an attempt to gauge the extent to which interviewees' memories cohered or not with the media's account of events involving black people; and which news stories have had significant and formative impact on the experiences of other-ness

Recognising the small Ree groups in their natural representations

We present Las Vegas algorithms for constructive recognition and constructive membership testing of the Ree groups 2G_2(q) = Ree(q), where q = 3^{2m + 1} for some m > 0, in their natural representations of degree 7. The input is a generating set X. The constructive recognition algorithm is polynomial time given a discrete logarithm oracle. The constructive membership testing consists of a pre-processing step, that only needs to be executed once for a given X, and a main step. The latter is polynomial time, and the former is polynomial time given a discrete logarithm oracle. Implementations of the algorithms are available for the computer algebra system MAGMA

Advances in the RXTE Proportional Counter Array Calibration: Nearing the Statistical Limit

    Get PDF
During its 16 years of service the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) mission has provided an extensive archive of data, which will serve as a primary source of high cadence observations of variable X-ray sources for fast timing studies. It is, therefore, very important to have the most reliable calibration of RXTE instruments. The Proportional Counter Array (PCA) is the primary instrument on-board RXTE which provides data in 3-50 keV energy range with sub-millisecond time resolution in up to 256 energy channels. In 2009 the RXTE team revised the response residual minimization method used to derive the parameters of the PCA physical model. The procedure is based on the residual minimization between the model spectrum for Crab nebula emission and a calibration data set consisting of a number of spectra from the Crab and the on-board Am241 calibration source, uniformly covering the whole RXTE mission operation period. The new method led to a much more effective model convergence and allowed for better understanding of the PCA energy-to-channel relationship. It greatly improved the response matrix performance. We describe the new version of the RXTE/PCA response generator PCARMF v11.7 (HEASOFT Release 6.7) along with the corresponding energy-to-channel conversion table (verson e05v04) and their difference from the previous releases of PCA calibration. The new PCA response adequately represents the spectrum of the calibration sources and successfully predicts the energy of the narrow iron emission line in Cas-A throughout the RXTE mission.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

Responding to cybercrime: Results of a comparison between community members and police personnel

    Get PDF
Advancements in information technology are sources of both opportunity and vulnerability for citizens. Previous research indicates that there are significant challenges for police in investigating cybercrime, that community expectations about police responses are based largely on media representations, and that victims experience high levels of frustration and stigmatisation. This paper examines the views of the Australian community and law enforcement officers about the policing of cybercrime. Results suggest that police personnel are more likely to view cybercrime as serious, and community members are more likely to ascribe blame to victims. Results also indicate a discrepancy between police and community members in their views of the efficacy of police responses. These discrepancies contribute to public dissatisfaction. Therefore, the paper covers some general strategies for short-and long-term cybercrime prevention

The forming of mild steel plates with a 2.5 kW high power diode laser

    Get PDF
Bending of 07 M20 mild steel sheets to various degrees using a contemporary 2.5 kW high power diode laser (HPDL) has been successfully demonstrated for the first time. The experimental results revealed that the HPDL induced bending angle increased with an increasing number of irradiations and high laser powers, yet decreased as the traverse speed was increased. It was also apparent from the experimental results that the laser bending angle was only linearly proportional to the number of irradiations when the latter was small. It is believed that the absence of linearity observed when the number of irradiations was high is due to local material thickening along the bend edge. From graphical results and the employment of an analytical model, the laser line energy range in which accurate control of the HPDL bending of the 07 M20 mild steel sheets could be exercised was found to be between 138 J mm-1 and 260 J mm-1
