In the French legal system, recognition of status is a classic issue that attracts diverse responses, depending on the circumstances, from procedural recognition of judgement to conflict of laws and conflict of authorities. In the light of this classic scheme, many foreign statuses are recognised in France without any difficulties, provided that they were legally obtained abroad. However, many obstacles to recognition remains and the current changing legal context in favour of a new subjective right of free movement including the status of persons, has been provoking active academic discussions among French scholars and unprecedented judicial developments. For these reasons, it is important to rethink globally the issue of recognition of status in a broad perspective within the French legal order.

An exploratory data-driven analysis for describing discourse organization

    Get PDF
International audienceThis paper focuses on the role of elements placed in the initial position i.e. elements fulfilling the role of Theme in discourse organisation. The large-scale corpus study proposes a new methodology based on automatic tagging and quantitative analysis of the discourse roles of sentence-initial elements. The theoretically-based hypothesis is that initial position has an important function in discourse organisation. Initial position, defined as the starting point of the message, is composed of the first elements that the reader perceives. The analysis of the distribution and the use in discourse of these elements gives us a great overview on the textual organisation of different types of text

dissertationExtant studies have been showing that online user generated content (UGC) plays an important role in product adoption. I expand this research by considering the roles of online UGC in both product development and product adoption processes. Moreover, the interrelationship between these two processes is investigated under a theoretical framework of double-sided adverse selection in which both developers and users are uncertain about the future of a product. I model product development and adoption processes over the product lifecycle, capturing the direct and indirect effects of online UGC on both processes. Data for the study are taken from a longitudinal dataset covering 63 months for 11,648 open source projects registered on Sourceforge.net, one of the largest open source software development platforms. The results of this study reveal that online UGC has a positive effect on both the initiation and the completion of product development activities. Moreover, product adoption helps amplify that positive effect. Those results are consistent with the theory that online UGC can provide ideas and solutions for development activities and that developers capitalize on those ideas and solutions to initiate and to complete development activities. In addition, the results also show that product development and product adoption affect each other positively. Those results are consistent with the theory that product development and adoption signal developers' commitment in developing the product and users' interest in the product, respectively. Hence, it is suggested that transparency between developers and users creates a positive feedback loop between product development and product adoption. Since this study investigates the behaviors of both developers and users, it implies applications for users, developers, as well as platform owners who want to design a competitive ecosystem to attract and satisfy both users and developers

Private State in Public Media: Subjectivity in French Traditional and Online News

International audienceThis paper reports on ongoing work dealing with the linguistic impact of putting the news on-line. In this framework, we investigate differences in one traditional newspaper and two forms of alternative on-line media with respect to the expression of authorial stance. Our research is based on a comparable large-scale corpus of articles published on the websites of the three respective media and aims at answering the question to what extent the presence of the author varies in the different media. - Is it a matter of amount and mode of the author's presence? - Is it a matter of lexical choice and diversity? - If this were the case, what expressions are used in the respective media? Our endeavour will be a methodological one. We firstly present our data, and thus describe the different news media included in our analysis and the diverse computer aided and manual production steps we performed in order to build up the corpus. Secondly, we outline our working hypotheses that are linked to the chosen types of media and describe the theoretical framework within which they are situated. Thirdly, we present our research method as well as some first results and insights gained throughout the pilot study of our data

National audienceSubjectivity in mass media: comparing participatory and traditional journalese This paper investigates linguistic differences and similarities in a traditional newspaper and participatory on-line media in order to examine to what extent the on-line production has an impact on the language use. Our method of investigation is based on corpus analysis. We analyze a large-scale corpus (8,000,000 words) composed of datasets representing different steps on a graduate scale from traditional printed newspaper to online citizen press.

Social Media Listening: Revealing the Indirect Effects of User Generated Content (UGC) on Product Adoption

    Get PDF
Industry studies suggest social media listening espouses several advantages. Evidence from academic research however is lacking and the need to investigate its impact especially in the context of product development is needed. This research explores how UGC influences market outcomes indirectly via its impact on product development. Building on current findings from empowerment-product demand and new product adoption research, we propose that product improvements building on consumer social media conversations are more likely to succeed. Using a system of equations modeling in the open source software context, we verify that increasing forum posts lead to a greater number of codes added to the software as well as more versions released which, in turn, influence product adoption positively. Interestingly, the impact of the number of codes on software download follows an inverted-U relationship. This relationship is consistent with previous findings on the diminishing impact of the empowerment effects. Our findings extend current understanding of the value of end-user contributions. Whereas previous research focuses on information voluntarily provided by users to product development team, our research suggests that even C2C communications provide insights to the development team and can influence market outcomes indirectly via product improvement. Our results suggest that there is value in investing in social media listening tools. While social media is currently utilized for marketing communications, our research provides evidence for its potential to contribute to the development of products that may have a greater chance of success

Improving Geopolymer Characteristics with Addition of Poly-Vinyl Alcohol (PVA) Fibers

This paper presents the benefits of PVA fibers in improving the mechanical properties of class F fly-ash-based geopolymer concrete. The activator used in the geopolymer was 8M sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate (Na2SiO3), with a mass ratio of Na2SiO3 to NaOH varied from 1.5 to 2.5. Cylindrical specimens with a diameter of 100 mm and a height of 200 mm were prepared for mechanical strength tests. The PVA fibers in the geopolymers were fixed at 0.4%, 0.6%, and 0.8% by total volume. Some mechanical tests were carried out, including compression, splitting, direct tensile and elastic modulus tests. It was found that the mixture with a ratio of alkalis of 1.5 and the PVA fiber content of 0.4% had the best workability. The highest compressive strength was obtained in a mixture with alkali activator ratios of 1.5 and 2.0, and with 0.6% fiber addition. The ratio of the tensile (and splitting-tensile) strength to compressive strength was found to increase with the certain amount of PVA fibers and the ratio of the alkali activators. The workability issue and fiber direction in the concrete were the dominant factors influencing the properties of geopolymer concrete
