Connecting the Direct Detection of Dark Matter with Observation of Sparticles at the LHC

An analysis is given connecting event rates for the direct detection of neutralino dark matter with the possible signatures of supersymmetry at the LHC. It is shown that if an effect is seen in the direct detection experiments at a level of O(10−44)O(10^{-44}) cm2^2 for the neutralino-proton cross section, then within the mSUGRA model the next heavier particle above the neutralino is either a stau, a chargino, or a CP odd/CP even (A/H) Higgs boson. Further, the collider analysis shows that models with a neutralino-proton cross section at the level of (1−5)×10−44(1-5)\times 10^{-44} cm2^2 could be probed with as little as 1 fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity at the LHC at s=10\sqrt s=10 TeV. The most recent limit from the five tower CDMS II result on WIMP-nucleon cross section is discussed in this context. It is argued that the conclusions of the analysis given here are more broadly applicable with inclusion of non-universalities in the SUGRA models.Comment: Published in PR

Elizabeth Bowen and the art of fiction: a study of her theory and practice

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston UniversityThe relationship of Elizabeth Bowen's critical theory to her practice has not yet received detailed treatment. Her essay "Notes on Writing a Novel" (1945), a comprehensive and revealing source of practical formulations on method, reveals her basic traditionalism and her striking individual qualities as well. It serves, furthermore, to bring her novels into relief and it suggests tentative conclusions about her place in contemporary literature. Examined here in detail are the eight main divisions of the essay: Plot, Characters, Scene, Dialogue, Visual Angle, Moral Angle, Advance, and Relevance of special importance in considering each of the eight novels are the following: under Plot, "the non-poetic statement of a poetic truth," "mystification as emphasis," "action of language," and "what-is-to-be-said"; under Characters, "materialization," "unpredictability and inevitability," and "diminution of alternatives"; under Scene, "the mood of the 'Now,'" "categoricalness," "staticness," and "dramatic use"; and under Dialogue, "faked realistic qualities" and "functional use." Non-Universality Effects and Dark Matter in Gravity Mediated SUSY Breaking

Dark matter detection rates for supergravity models with R parity where supersymmetry is broken at a scale >~M_G are discussed. Non-universal soft breaking masses in both the Higgs and squark sectors are considered, and it is seen that these can effect rates by a factor of 10-100 when m_X <~ 65 GeV (X=lightest neutralino) but otherwise make relatively small corrections. The b->s+\gamma branching ratio is seen to correlate with detector event rates, large (small) branching ratios corresponding to small (large) event rates. Effects of precision determinations of cosmological parameters or event rate predictions by future satellite experiments are discussed for the LCDM and the vCDM models.Comment: LaTeX 7 pages,4 figures, requires espcrc2.sty available from http://dept.physics.upenn.ed

Clean-up of Contaminated Indoor Air Using Photocatalytic Technology

    Get PDF
A number of Sick Building Syndrome studies have concluded that microorganisms, endotoxins and VOCs in indoor air are involved in the development and/or aggravation of allergies and illnesses in buildings. The phototcatalytic indoor air disinfection and detoxification technology provides one of the most viable solutions to the growing need to remediate and purify contaminated indoor air. The experiments were conducted in a stainless steel environmental chamber to quantitatively measure the photocatalytic VOC destruction using Acetone as a representative VOC. While monitoring the VOC destruction, carbon dioxide (C02) levels were also measured. By performing a mass balance between the VOC destruction and C02 production, the photocatalytic technology was found to be completely effective. Dark control experiments were performed for each condition to confirm the validity of each experiment. The photocatalytic technology tested in these experiments was demonstrated to completely oxidize acetone at normal indoor air atmospheric conditions

We demonstrate that an invisibly decaying Higgs boson with Standard Model coupling strength to top--anti-top can be detected at the LHC for masses up to about 250 GeV.Comment: 7 pages, requires phyzzx.tex and tables.tex, revised to convert results from SSC to LHC and include additional top quark mass cases, full postscript file including embedded figure available via anonymous ftp at ucdhep.ucdavis.edu as [anonymous.gunion]hinvisible_revised.ps, preprint UCD-93-2

Phases in the MSSM, Electric Dipole Moments and Cosmological Dark Matter

We consider the effect of CP violating phases in the MSSM on the relic density of the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). In particular, we find that the upper limits on the LSP mass are relaxed when phases in the MSSM are allowed to take non-zero values when the LSP is predominantly a gaugino (bino). Previous limits of \mb \la 250 GeV for Ωh2<0.25\Omega h^2 < 0.25 can be relaxed to \mb \la 650 GeV. We also consider the additional constraints imposed by the neutron and electron electric dipole moments induced by these phases. Though there is some restriction on the phases, the bino mass may still be as large as ∼\sim 350 GeV and certain phases can be arbitrarily large.Comment: 10 pages in LaTeX, with 4 Postscript figures (included

Illuminating Hot Jupiters in caustic crossing

In recent years a large number of Hot Jupiters orbiting in a very close orbit around the parent stars have been explored with the transit and doppler effect methods. Here in this work we study the gravitational microlensing effect of a binary lens on a parent star with a Hot Jupiter revolving around it. Caustic crossing of the planet makes enhancements on the light curve of the parent star in which the signature of the planet can be detected by high precision photometric observations. We use the inverse ray shooting method with tree code algorithm to generate the combined light curve of the parent star and the planet. In order to investigate the probability of observing the planet signal, we do a Monte-Carlo simulation and obtain the observational optical depth of τ∼10−8\tau \sim 10^{-8}. We show that about ten years observations of Galactic Bulge with a network of telescopes will enable us detecting about ten Hot Jupiter with this method. Finally we show that the observation of the microlensing event in infra-red band will increase the probability for detection of the exo-planets.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted in MNRA
