The Leader and the Mass: The Political Body and the Power of Rhetorics

We can structure the relationship between the mass and the leader as a seduction, as an erotic ritual. This erotic ritual functions through a scheme (boy meets girl) that we can consider as  a starting point to define the nature of the mass when is approaching the Power. I want to use as a case study two scenes from the film The Fall of Berlin,  a war/love drama directed by Michail Chiaureli, a stunning example of propaganda films of late Stalinist period. First, I am going to analyse the relationship between Alesha (the hero of the film, or, we can say, the alter hero of the film but not Stalin) and Stalin, focusing my attention on this so called ritual of seduction; the one in love (Alesha), the object of scopophilia (Stalin), according to the work made by Laura Mulvey. Then, through the analysis of the ending scene of the film, I will try to delineate some characteristic of the mass and Stalin facing each others; from Canetti to Agamben, the importance of gestures. From a  submissiveness crowd unable to control their gestures in front of the leader, to a crowd steady and controlled (as in Gezi park); the immobility as a weapon to manifest dissent, the immobility as a key to problematize our use of the body

Evaluation of Airport Security Training Programs: Perspectives and Issues

    Get PDF
While many governments and airport operators have emphasized the importance of security training and committed a large amount of budget to security training programs, the implementation of security training programs was not proactive but reactive. Moreover, most of the security training programs were employed as a demand or a trendchasing activity from the government. In order to identify issues in airport security training and to develop desirable security training procedures in an airport, this preliminary study aims at providing (1) the description of current state of airport security training and training in general, (2) the study design and interview guide for studying airport security training, and (3) expected outcome from the study

Bayesian modelling for spatially misaligned health areal data: a multiple membership approach

Diabetes prevalence is on the rise in the UK, and for public health strategy, estimation of relative disease risk and subsequent mapping is important. We consider an application to London data on diabetes prevalence and mortality. In order to improve the estimation of relative risks we analyse jointly prevalence and mortality data to ensure borrowing strength over the two outcomes. The available data involves two spatial frameworks, areas (middle level super output areas, MSOAs), and general practices (GPs) recruiting patients from several areas. This raises a spatial misalignment issue that we deal with by employing the multiple membership principle. Specifically we translate area spatial effects to explain GP practice prevalence according to proportions of GP populations resident in different areas. A sparse implementation in Stan of both the MCAR and GMCAR allows the comparison of these bivariate priors as well as exploring the different implications for the mapping patterns for both outcomes. The necessary causal precedence of diabetes prevalence over mortality allows a specific conditionality assumption in the GMCAR, not always present in the context of disease mapping

The new information and communication technologies have swiftly transformed the social reality and our daily life. Young people in particular have incorporated them as part of their world experience, being paradigmatic the case of the Internet, through which they build their identities, manifest their ways of being and construct their everyday life. In this way, the traditional ways of being in the world are transformed, setting new constructions and appropriation of values, practices and meanings. It is precisely the relation between one of the possible uses internet has and the construction of subjectivity which we intend to explore. From the analysis of a girl’s blog belonging to the cyberculture of pro Ana/pro Mia, we will try to unravel which are the identity traits that are expressed in writing and which are the technical and discursive resources, register and content chosen to manifest and share a personal but, also group way to see the world and be in it.Facultad de Periodismo y Comunicación Socia
